Debt Collector
Caller I.D. no. is (530) 292-5002 (also CA number.)  They stated that they were a legal agency (Federal something or other.)  They said that I owed for a payday loan.  Not true.  Besides knowing my work phone number, they also knew the last 4 digits of my SSN.  I became furious and told them that they would be in trouble if they pursued anything further.  They said they would call me back.  No call so far.

Debt Collector
Just got the call at work from (626)380-0922.  My caller I.D. shows (530) 292-5002.  Same threatening message stating that they want me or my atty. to return call.  He said his name is Sean Michaels (I wonder if he also wrestles for the WWF.)  The message stated that I will suffer some very serious consequences if I do not return the call.  I did immediately return the call.  They said they are a legal agency and had my work number and the last 4 digits of my SSN.  They would not speak with me any further until I confirmed that the last 4 digits were correct.  They stated that I owed money for a payday loan.  I have taken out payday loans in the past and they are all paid up in full.  I insisted on knowing what company they were representing and let them know that there are no outstanding loans and that they would be the ones in trouble if they attempted anything further.  They hung up on me.  I called them back and said I had no outstanding loans and how dare they make a threatening call at my work number.  They said they would call me back and I haven't heard back from them so far today. I will make a report at that "report unwanted calls" site above.  Any other suggestions on what to do?  Absolutely furious!!!  (P.S. -- I do not suggest making payday loans because #1 - they are expensive, but mostly because whatever information you put on the application, they share with other companies.  There is a check point that you have to okay stating that they can share your information and they will not proceed with your loan unless you check that box.  Don't do it!!)

WALLINGFORD, CT, August 07, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Better Business Bureau is warning consumers about would-be debt collectors who call "payday" loan holders, threatening arrest if they don't pay immediately.

A payday loan, also known as a paycheck advance, is a short-term cash advance intended to cover expenses until the holder's next payday.

The callers claim they are lawyers with the "Financial Accountability Association" or the "Federal Legislation of Unsecured Loans," and they are armed with stolen personal information from their victims, indicating a major security breach of unknown origin. The names used by the scammers may change with time.

According to Connecticut Better Business Bureau President, Paulette Scarpetti, payday loan holders appear to be particularly at risk.

"Because the scammers have so much information about potential victims, BBB is concerned that this may be the result of a data breach. Thousands of people may have had their personal information compromised."

Reports received by Better Business Bureau and posted online explain the con artists threaten the loan holders of defaulting and claim they are being sued. The imposters threaten the loan holders with imminent arrest and extradition to California to stand trial, unless they immediately wire $1000 or provide bank account or credit card information.

Connecticut Better Business Bureau has advice for consumers who receive suspicious telephone calls about an outstanding debt:

-Don't be bullied into immediate action. Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation that substantiates the debt.
-Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the telephone until you confirm the legitimacy of the call.
-If you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you, file an abuse complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) online at www. ftc.gov, or by telephone at (202) 326-2222. Also file a complaint with your Better Business Bureau at http://www.bbb.org or by telephone at 203-269-2700, ext. 2.

Someone named Mark Henry claiming to be from The Federal Counsel called my job and left a message. Said that he was just calling to verify my place of employment and home address. My question is this - if there is a case pending in the courthouse, shouldn't they already have my home and work address? Not only did he have a heavy accent but there was also a lot of noise in the background and he kept pausing during his message as if he had to think of what to say next.
