I have been part of a big tax fraud with my employer and ever since then I have been getting calls that are very rude and alarming on top of him having my social security number, and he says he from American police program.   He has my employee number as well.  My job is well aware of this so its deff a big scam so be careful they could be filing income tax fraud as well with all your information.

This is a SCAMMER. Don't answer this number. Anything they say to you is FALSE. I just had a good little chat with the guy claiming to be "Alex Williams", during which i had him swearing up a storm at me, with him saying things such as "You stupid motherf**ker" and "I'm going to f**king kill you". Couldn't have been more hilarious. Do make note that it is a violation of federal law for an actual collection agency to say such things. And for them to threaten arrest or a lawsuit. All of which this guy did.

Word of advice; IF they have your correct social security number, or any other personally identifiable information, it would be advisable to immediately get a credit report, check your bank and credit card statements, and to go down to your local police department and ask them for advice. I would not put it past people like this to be involved in identity theft or other harmful criminal activities.

AGAIN. THIS IS A SCAM. DO NOT PICK UP OR GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY.

A Collection Agent May Not?

Here are the top 11 actions prohibited by the The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act:

Misrepresent Him or Herself

A debt collector may not misrepresent himself as an attorney or law enforcement officer.

Use the Telephone to Annoy or Harass

A collection agent may not cause a telephone to ring or engage any person in telephone conversation repeatedly or continuously with an intent to annoy, abuse, or harass anyone at the called number.

Threaten Arrest or Lawsuit

A collection agent may not threaten a consumer with arrest. It may not threaten legal action that is either not permitted or not actually contemplated. In other words, a the threat of a lawsuit may be an empty one.

Use Abusive or Threatening Language

A debt collector may no use abusive or profane language in the course of communication related to the debt.

Publish a Bad Debt List

Publishing the consumer?s name or address on a "bad debt" list is prohibited.

Contact By Embarrassing Media

A debt collector may not communicate with a consumer by post card. It may not use any language or symbol, other than the debt collector?s address, on any envelope when communicating with a consumer by use of the mails or by telegram. A debt collector may use its business name if such name does not indicate it is in the debt collection business.

Contact a Consumer at Work

A collection agent may not communicate with consumers at their place of employment after being told this is unacceptable or prohibited by the employer.

Seek Unjustifiable Amounts

A debt collector may not demand any amounts not permitted under an applicable contract or as provided under law.

Contact a Consumer Represented by an Attorney

A collection agent may not contact a consumer after it learns the consumer is represented by a lawyer.

Communicate With a Consumer After Receiving a Validation Request

If a consumer sends a written §1692g response within 30 days, the collection agent may not communicate with the consumer until it mails the consumer the requested verification of original creditor's name and address.

Communicate With Third Parties

A debt collector may not reveal or discuss the nature of a consumer?s debts with third parties other than the consumer?s spouse or attorney. A collection agent may contact neighbors or co-workers only to obtain location information. It may contact a third party again if it has reason to believe the information the party provided previously is false.

Bills.com FDCPA FAQ

Below are questions Bills.com readers ask frequently:

Can a Collection Agent Call My Cell Phone?

Yes. However, if you tell the debt collector it may not use that number because it is a cell phone, it may not contact you again at that number.

I Keep Receiving Dozens of Calls From Collection Agents. Is That Legal?

No. Unscrupulous collection agents will use "block parties" or "office parties" where they contact a consumer, multiple neighbors, or co-workers telling them they need to reach the consumer on an urgent matter. This is not permitted under the FDCPA.

A Collector Says I Will Be Arrested if I Do Not Pay

This was a true statement before the US Civil War, but has not been true since. People may be arrested if an aggressive judge files a bench warrant for a person who does not appear at a hearing relating to a lawsuit regarding a debt. However, in that case, the offense is the failure to respond to a court order, and not the existence of the debt. As stated above, it is illegal under the FDCPA to threaten a consumer with arrest if the consumer does not pay the debt.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:

I have been getting these calls at work about every two weeks. They may be trying my cell phone as well, but I have a block against unknown callers on that. The caller is always a man with a heavy Indian or Middle Eastern accent - very difficult to understand. This evening, I had to play the message three times in order to hear the number. I believe he gave his name this time as Alex Williams, from American Loan (or Law) Enforcement Department. In the past, he has also phoned, claiming to be Jack Hoffman. He always tells me that there is an investigation against my social security number and my home address, and if I don't respond immediately, I will suffer the consequences. Other than reporting this every time he phones, is there anything else to do?

Got a call from a Indian speaking man telling me my name and social security number is part of a serious crime. I ask what the crime was and he told me I know what I did. I then told him, whatever I'm being charged with send me in writing and I will have my attorney get back with him. He hung up. The next day he called my job and left a message that if I didn't respond to him within an hour they were coming to arrest me. He didn't know I work at night. My job called me and told me in a panic about what was said. I informed them that if he call again, it's part of a scam and just tell him I'm not available. He calls using the name Sgt. Micheal Black. My attorney googled the number and found out it was a scam and that quite a few people have already contacted the BBB and FBI. I notified my job to try and get the number blocked but was told the couldn't do that. I also notified the local police department. He said he's going to keep calling until I loose my job. The new mumber he's using is  6463967619 andis now using the name Alex Williams.

These jerks called my work several times. Spoke in a very loud Indian accent.
They said there was a law suit filed against me. I hung up because I knew it
was a scam. If there actually was a law suit against me - I would recieve a legal notice
via certified mail and then served with legal papers... Be very careful of who gets your
phone numbers and personal information.

These jerks are scammers and its obvious.
No legitimate attorneys office or legitimate collections office would speak to people so rudely
because if they did - you would definitely have a right to sue them for harrassment!

I just got a call from this man with a accent sounding indian he said he was calling from a law enforcement agency  and that did i want to know who was suing me, i told him first off I know my rights and its against the law to call and harrass me at work, and i then hung up, he called right back, i said man, who ever is suing me, go ahead and let them do what they need to due, I told him I know you all are scammers, and hung up again, about two weeks ago, I was appyling for a payday loan, and never got one, but I know how this all started, i got a call from two different places last week, one guy called and said he was going to serve me papers, and would i like them to be served at my home or my work, now a real process server do not call you to ask where would you like to be served. Then the next day this lady called from this collection agency said i owed for a loan from this place i know i had not taken out a loan and i asked her where was she located she said in florida i said what part and she got mad, then the next day this guy called he was from the same place, when i called the number he had called from that lady that called me the day before answered, i told them i was not paying anything until i see the actual loan documents, i get a letter in the mail, but it didnt have those papers with it, scam, when you all get calls like these and no matter what they threaten you with, its all a scam, dont let them scare you to the point where you pay them, you cant be arrested all they can do if you owe is file a jusdgment suit against, that will be on your credit report, and if you know you didnt take out a loan, dont worry, and one more piece of advice, if they are harrassing you at work, it is a good idea to let your employer know, your supervisor, your human resource dept and whom ever is  answering the phones, that way if they call your supoervisor or human rescource they will be aware of whats going, so you wont have to be afraid of getting in trouble at work. I also gave them this website, so if they do get a call they can look up the number and see what other people are saying about this place
