I was almost defrauded by this person "gentleman" tonight also in a rental scam in Guelph, Ontario. I ended up sending money and Western Union saved my a** as I was a new customer. Calling Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and Property for Rent Scam
It was a Kijiji add for a rental property

****CLOSE CALL ON $2400*******......THIS MAN ASKED ME TO MAKE A TRANSFER TO ANYONE I KNOW AS PROOF OF MONEY, HE SAYS HE LIVES A DISTANCE AWAY......I SENT MONEY TRANSFER TO MY MOM, HOWEVER THIS GUY ASKED ME FOR COPY OF RECEIPT. I WAS UNAWARE THAT BY SENDING HIM THE COPY OF RECEIPT THIS WAS ALL HE NEEDED.
I WAS FORTUNATE NOT TO HAVE DONE SAME DAY SERVICE BECAUSE I THOUGHT IT WAS TOO EXPENSIVE.

MY MONEY WOULD HAVE BEEN GONE

LESSON: NEVER EVER EVER EVER GIVE THIS "MINC" NUMBER TO ANYONE UNLESS YOU KNOW THEM AND ONLY GIVE THE WESTERN UNION MICN VERBALLY TO THE PERSON YOU KNOW.....NO EMAIL/TEXT.

If you have a look at the photo of the western union receipt it includes something called an MTCN number. This is the 'special' number that Money Mart/ Western Union uses to allocate or transfer funds. The photo proving that you have funds (although sent to a family member or friend) is open game for the grabbing once he gets this number. He uses this number to collect the money from the account in one of 3 ways:

1. He has a contact at a Western Union location which gets a cut of the funds.
2. He acquires/creates fake ID to pose at the recipient.
3. He uses a location where they don't care to check for ID.

As a retired black hat email marketer and information security expert it's ironic how this found it's way directly on my lap. I was actually looking for a place to rent. Unknown to him, I have a profound knowledge in this industry and he gave up all his information when he decided to call me. I shocked this individual when he discovered my background. He's sloppy. I have his information and at the present time I'm giving him the opportunity for redemption before I make his world a living hell.

How did they get the money from Western Union? Im looking at this house as well..

ok so i now know 100% this is a scam they responded to my add looking for a place to live sent me info and pictures that seemed to good to be true of course i was leery but they reassured me that it was safe that they did not want me to western union them the money but to instead send it to a friend which i figured that sending it to a friend or family member was harmless went to go pick up the money transfer and the money had already bin picked up by some one else!!!! in this scam i lost 2600 for the transfer and 125 to send the transfer this is 100% a scam and stay clear of these scam artistes it is the end of the month and all the money i had to move has bin stolen how can some people be so cruel and heartless
