This is a total scam!!! They have already taken $500 out of my mother's checking account, because she was stupid enough to fall for the "you have won a lottery" scam. He called her 22 times yesterday wanting another $2500! Needless to say, we have notified the police!!!

This number just called here in a distressed voice saying they were in a car accident and will need a  two hour break. It was bad acting, and jumbled up story. That made me suspicious, so I googled number and found you guys. Thanks so much for letting me know. Portfolio Recovery will try anything to get you to call them back so they can restart the clock on your old dead debt.

The statute of limitations does not allow for a company to collect on a debt if they  have reached in you w/in x amount of years. Each state has a statute of limitations for credit card debt. Once the collector reaches the limit they sell the debt to another collector who has a legal right to collect. Portfolio Recover has subsidiaries that pass your debt around with their  group. So don't  return their call or the clock will begin ticking, and they will have legal right initiate a law suite on debt you don't owe them. You will need an attorney to defend yourself to avoid judgement. They will initiate a garnishment or lien against your assets. So don't call them back.

Hate to tell you but cease and desist letters do not work against this company. They will still ignore the laws and do as they please despite lawsuits and fines from FTC and other government agencies. I wonder if there is a lawyer out there brave enough to handle a class action lawsuit against collection agencies and if we the abused would join the fight and inundate the collection agencies with harassing phone calls in return. I dream of calling their upper management with an air horn or a program that repeatedly calls their home phone at all hours. Sweet Revenge.

The man immediately started to call me all sorts of names like deadbeat, c-sucker, SOB. I hung up!

They are persistent little vermin, they have been calling this number for almost four years now, and not once has it been picked up, but ...they can dream. Actually, the atty. general's office got them to  answer my correspondance, about two years ago. The dopey lawyer named Pearson wrote that they had sent me a bogus 1099-C because they had "decided to cease collection efforts."

They wasted my time, because I had to complain to the FCC, the USPS for mail fraud, the IRS  to point out it was a totally unverified claim that has its roots in a Visa card, which had been closed over 15 years ago, and that I had never done any business with these pond scum, plus I wrote another letter which added the report into my file at the state attorney general's office.

Well, the 1099-C did not cause us to owe any tax, but these bottom-feeders are still calling. This one was #300  !!!! since they "decided to cease collection efforts."  I love that they have not forgotten us, because each time they call, it gives me another opportunity to make sure others know what kind of vermin they are, and not to be intimidated. Do not answer, or hang up immediately if you do, do not tell them a single bit of information or engage in any conversation at all. They are bullies, running a perfectly legal extortion scam. Since your government refuses to protect you from them, protect yourself.

They cannot collect credit card debt that is (varies by State to State) older than 4 years. It's the law.

Annoying, unwanted calls from this number.  If I don't know the number, I don't answer the phone.  I do, however, go on line and see who else is being harassed.  Too many people.  Have done the do-not-call registry  again!!

They called 8:45 a.m. Caller ID showed Portfolio Recovery. I answered, they did not. They called Sunday 2/17 from 678-265-1576, no message.

You don't seem so smart.  All you have to do is a little research on the web to understand bottom feeding boiler room junk 3rd party bill collectors.  Because some person on the phone or in writing says you owe them money from yrs ago for another company doesn't mean dirt.  They have to prove they own the debt which you should never admit to on the phone or even talk to them.  Debt thats yrs old is not legal to collect unless you admit to the debt and offer to pay on it and darn you reset the SOL making the debt once again collectible.  But in the first place you never asked for validation to see if in fact they actually own the debt and how they came up with the mount they say you owe.
You messed yourself up maybe by flapping at the lips over a debt that is likely uncollectible.

this company has started to call me again; it is part of Asset Acceptance, which is a collection agency that has confused my maiden name with one of their debtors.  They were told by me and contacted by the AG's office to stop their continual harassing calls (3x/day!).

What can you do to stop them from repeating this mistake?

I get calls like these nearly every day mostly from the 847 area code, and today's 702.

I do not owe any debt except that I am in debt settlement and PRA would need to contact my debt counselor to see what debt i owe.

Probably the same old f****ng Tmobile debt that was declared fraudulent and dead by many others.

They probably spend 33c for a $310 debt which I do not acknowledge or own.

If they aren't legitimate, can't they be shut down? Legally, the numbers can be traced to a location (Richmond, Va. stated above?). They call here often with no message and nobody on the line. They just called at almost 9:00 p.m. awakening my elderly Mom is very ill.

I'll start keeping the phone off the hook at night to prevent that; yet, they should be stopped . It would be nice first though if they had to pay the price of all their annoyance.

This company buy old old debt and tries to recover. Usually they'll send a bill stating the debt is so old they cannot sue you or add debt to credit report. They are relentless but have no ground. Losers

Well, I plugged in my magic jack after months of dormancy and low and behold these bottom feeders are on the phone right away.  This Anthony guy wants me to make arrangements, including my bank acct numbers for specific amts for 32 months to pay off a very, very old Capitol One balance.  I offer to send him 20 bucks and he refuses to take it and I won't give him my acct number.  He gets really angry and hangs up on me!

I had explained I was on SocSec and thought this bill had been written off many years ago and that he should consider himself lucky to get anything if I were willing to send it.  NOT.  I have been called by them and NCO both, looking for someone else.  Someone on here stated that each state has a statue of limitations on the age of the debt.  I am going to look into this.  But according to what you are all saying Portfolio doesn't care what the law is or not.  Does anyone know about Indiana?  And, someone else stated if you start making payment the clock starts all over again????
