Craigslist & Kijiji are not eBay. Not what they were designed for. I really don't understand why people don't put "Local only, In person, No text Msg., Cash only" in their ad. 99.9% of the scammers are gone. No one in Detroit is going to buy a car from Fresno. Not going to happen.

Here is how a "Craigslist Scam" or any other "I will send you a check for more than you asked" scam works:


He pays for the item + extra funds to cover his shipping agent costs with a bank draft or cashiers check.
He sends you a check, tells you to cash it and send the extra money to his shipping agent via wire transfer or prepaid card.
You cash/deposit check and wire/prepaid the funds to the agent.
Later, the check bounces as it was counterfeit. The money you sent to the agent, who is really the scammer, is unrecoverable due to it being wire transferred/prepaid card.
You are out money and now run the risk of being arrested for passing a counterfeit check.

received the following text while trying to sell item on craigslist:

(2/3)address to send the check out. I will also handle the shipment my self through my shipping company after you have cash at hand. I dont

I can hold it for you. Couple questions before we proceed. What is your name and do you live in Florida? Who will be the shipping company? I've had a few people in the past asking about it and asking for my address and everything seemed shady so pardon my hesitation with providing my address. (I received your msg at 12:30 am (midnight)

Put some furniture up on Craigslist and this man text me with the same message.  Wanting me to cash a check that he would be sending to me and pay a moving company to grab the furniture that I was selling.  He wouldn't answer my calls, would only reply through text message.  Scammer!!!!!

HE ANSWERED ADD ON  CRAIGSLIST, TRYING TO GET REAL EMAIL AND NAME, PHONE #, A 3 PAGE TEXT WAS SENT ABOUT BEING AWAY ON A BUSINESS EMERGENCY, AND WOULD PAY BY CHECK AND ARRANGE FOR PICK UP LATER, HE IS CONNECTED TO ANOTHER PHONE # THAT IS NOT LISTED AS A SCAM, BUT THEY BOTH SENT THE  SAME 3 PAGE TEXT MESSAGE WITH IN 5 MIN. OF EACH OTHER.  -  WHY DON'T THESE LOW LIFE'S GET A JOB ! ( OH YA, BECAUSE THEY ARE LOW LIFE'S )

I just got the same text from them.

I just got the following text from them:

"we are currently having vaccination for a herd here.due to this i will not be able to come do the pick up myself and pay via cash, so due to that i will be paying you via check .so after the check has been cashed by you i will ask my mover's to come for the pick up at your location"

Craigslist Money Gram scammer claiming to be a "veteran" working on a "ranch" that will have their "movers" deliver the product once you wire them some money.
