WASHINGTON ? The Internal Revenue Service today warned consumers about a sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, throughout the country.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver?s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting.

?This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country.  We want to educate taxpayers so they can help protect themselves.  Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer,? says IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel. ?If someone unexpectedly calls claiming to be from the IRS and threatens police arrest, deportation or license revocation if you don?t pay immediately, that is a sign that it really isn?t the IRS calling.? Werfel noted that the first IRS contact with taxpayers on a tax issue is likely to occur via mail
Other characteristics of this scam include:
Scammers use fake names and IRS badge numbers. They generally use common names and surnames to identify themselves.
Scammers may be able to recite the last four digits of a victim?s Social Security Number.
Scammers spoof the IRS toll-free number on caller ID to make it appear that it?s the IRS calling.
Scammers sometimes send bogus IRS emails to some victims to support their bogus calls.
Victims hear background noise of other calls being conducted to mimic a call site.
After threatening victims with jail time or driver?s license revocation, scammers hang up and others soon call back pretending to be from the local police or DMV, and the caller ID supports their claim.
If you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, here?s what you should do:
If you know you owe taxes or you think you might owe taxes, call the IRS at 1.800.829.1040. The IRS employees at that line can help you with a payment issue ? if there really is such an issue.
If you know you don?t owe taxes or have no reason to think that you owe any taxes (for example, you?ve never received a bill or the caller made some bogus threats as described above), then call and report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1.800.366.4484.
If you?ve been targeted by this scam, you should also contact the Federal Trade Commission and use their ?FTC Complaint Assistant? at FTC.gov.  Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to the comments of your complaint.
Taxpayers should be aware that there are other unrelated scams (such as a lottery sweepstakes) and solicitations (such as debt relief) that fraudulently claim to be from the IRS.
The IRS encourages taxpayers to be vigilant against phone and email scams that use the IRS as a lure. The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email to request personal or financial information.  This includes any type of electronic communication, such as text messages and social media channels. The IRS also does not ask for PINs, passwords or similar confidential access information for credit card, bank or other financial accounts. Recipients should not open any attachments or click on any links contained in the message. Instead, forward the e-mail to phishing@irs.gov.

More information on how to report phishing scams involving the IRS is available on the genuine IRS website, IRS.gov.

I just got a call like this from a man posing as an officer from the IRS with the number (703)8318283.  At first I received a recorded messages that said it is important for me to call back otherwise he wishes me good luck.  I called back and he answered telling me I am a part of a text crime investigation.  I said is this some kind of joke.  He said you will be laughing when they come after you and hung up the phone on me. Does anyone know what this scam is about?

Its pretty typical of the scammers to use these tactics and use real agency's as well as made up ones to sound official.

Please do file reports with the FBI, your state attorney general and Department Of Justice,FTC

We got the same call. The call was for my mom. He said his name was Justin and worked for Federal Crime Enforcement agency. He wanted us to go to a local Walgreen's or CVS to get some card. He said something about not filling 1040 for 2011. He wanted $2400. My mom, jokingly, offered to pay by check but he didn't want a check because it would take too long. I put the phone on speaker and recorded almost the entire conversation. My mom tried to make the conversation as long as possible. When my mom said she will go to a CVS, he said that he will call back once she was at a CVS. Of course, she didn't go. After 5 min, he called back and I answered the phone. Started to curse him off for about 5 min and he hung up saying that he won't call back. Same thing happened to four of my uncles. And three of them got a call at the same time as my mom. It could be that they are going down a list of people in alphabetical order. He had an accent.

we receiving similar calls from this guy calling him self as Gary Wilson from IRS , Federal crime enforcement division and said same thing as my daughter will be arrested and it will be 7 days
before we can speak to her unless we transfer $ 2500 to him with Green dot card. FTC should take out
these Green dot cards they being used as fraude purposes. This guy is from Indian origin and mostly targets Indian females ( house wife ). I was able to trace the phone no. it is coming from Sterling VA ( suburb of dulles va. This guy may have one of those Vonage box which you can carry any where in the world and when call is made it shows united staes phone no. I believe lots of complaints filed on this guy. Why FTC or any govt agency don't back track and find who this guy is ?. In this modern world any body can
be traced very effectively .

So friends be careful. I have noticed they tend to get more Indian people.

I got a call from 7035747061 # a few days ago and today as well..  I thought it was fishy that he called and left a message again since the last time they called I asked for his Federal Badge number, he told me to hang up and never call back.
We have 3 legal allegations filled against you he said, I am not sure what will happen to you now, you will see charges on your cards?
I also asked him to tell me which Federal agency location he is calling from, no answer.
He did have a Indian accent and he said his name was Gary Wilson from FBI.

When I called the number back there was no answer, the voice mail box was full so I could not leave a message.
Called FTC and they told me to  call Consumer Protection Agency.

I got a call just now from this number, asking for my husband. He said his name was David, but he had a thick Indian accent. When I asked him what the call was about, he tells me he is calling from a Federal agency. I told him I don't believe anything he is saying and I asked him to send me everything in writing, he got very angry. He then threatened me that a warrant will be sent out in 45 minutes. I told him I don't believe him and hung up. He tried calling me three times again, but I just blocked the phone number from my phone.
