This man claiming to be named Sam Peterson called me from a different number than this one (704)251-9803 and left a message on my voicemail saying he was from the Central Intelligence Headquarters and that a lawsuit had been filed against my ssn and that if I didn't return the call, I would be in a "big legal mess". He had a very thick accent, so thick that I had to listen to the message several times before I could figure out what he was saying. The one time I did actually answer the phone, he hung up! I googled central intelligence headquarters and guess what, there isn't one. I looked up the number on whitepages.com and found out this is a landline not a cell phone and it's an unpublished number.

"Mac Hardy" called me from both this number and 704-755-3323.  He was looking for someone else.  His accent was a very thick Indian one and there was a huge amount of background noise.  He yelled at me repeatedly and kept saying it was an "urgent" matter and that the person he was looking for had committed "criminal acts."  The second and third time he called (all within a 24-hour period), the number he used was different from the first time.  When I looked up the number and saw that it was part of a scam, I told him I had reported him to the FBI and would no longer be answering the phone.  He called back immediately and left me a message saying that I was now under investigation.
I have no idea how he got my phone number because I am unlisted.  I hope this does not continue.

Been getting the same phome calls for about 1 1/2 yrs now.(about once every 4 or 5 months). Very annoying and scary knowing they have some of my personal information. My biggest fear is loosing my job because they keep calling my work looking for me....What can one do to stop them from calling employers ? Probably nothing. However I have shown the HR manager at work this web site and she understands its a scam and that I am a victim.

If you are targeted by these criminals, be sure to report them to all the following federal and state law enforcement agencies (most of which you can do online or over the phone):
1.    The U.S. Secret Service is responsible for protecting the country's financial infrastructure and payment systems from international and domestic threats. Call or write your local Secret Service field office to alert them to the details of this attempted extortion. The addresses and phone numbers for the local Secret Service field offices are listed at http://www.secretservice.gov/field_offices.shtml or in your phone book.
2.    Alert the FBI at https://tips.fbi.gov Be sure to tell the FBI that you are being targeted by extortionists over the phone. And if the crooks claim to be law enforcement or lawyers, officers of the court or bankers, be sure to include that information in your report.
3.    File a complaint with your local police. Most police departments will take a report over the phone.  Be sure to tell them that you're being targeted by an extortionist and give them all the details.
4.    File a complaint your state's attorney general, the contact information for whom is at www.wvago.gov
5.    File a complaint online with The Federal Trade Commission at https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/FTC_Wizard.aspx?Lang=en
If these crooks call back, promise them nothing, pay them nothing and tell them nothing other than that you know they're a scam and that you've reported them to law enforcement. (And be sure to report them to all the agencies above each time they call you.)

By the way, here's just a small sample of numbers used by this particular group of scammers. Read the reports and you'll see the same pattern time and again -- phony organization names, thick foreign accents, and oddly worded threats that are so melodramatic and ridiculous that it's laughable:

Scam alert: Bogus debt collectors
By Leslie McFadden ? Bankrate.com
Monday, Aug. 3
Posted 2 p.m.
Bankrate reporter Leslie McFadden contributed this entry.
This scam isn't technically about credit cards, but it is scary enough to post a warning. The Better Business Bureau issued an alert today saying consumers across the country are getting phone calls from bogus debt collectors claiming default on a payday loan. Of course, the consumer needs to pay a large fee to avoid arrest -- as much as $1,000.
The caller poses as a lawyer, and may threaten extradition to face trial if the consumer doesn't pay up immediately.
What makes these calls alarming -- and perhaps convincing -- is that the perpetrators reference the consumer's personal information, such as the person's Social Security number, driver's license number, previous bank account numbers, home address -- even personal references.
"The amount of information they have is really troubling," says BBB spokeswoman Alison Southwick. She adds that the amount of data points to a possible security breach.
Spread the word to your friends and family: Don't give out personal or financial information to an unknown caller. Scammers can spoof Caller ID to display different numbers, so trust your instincts over technology.
The BBB offers these tips:
?    Ask the debt collector to provide official documentation which substantiates the debt.
?    Do not provide or confirm any bank account, credit card or other personal information over the phone until you have confirmed the legitimacy of the call.
?    File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission online if the caller is abusive, uses threats or otherwise violates federal telemarketing laws or the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
?    File a complaint with the Better Business Bureau online if you believe a debt collector is trying to scam you.

I HAVE BEEN RECIEVING HARRASING PHONE CALLS FROM SOMEONE WITH A THICK ACCENT NAMED SAM PETERSON. HE ALSO HAS BEEN CALLING MY BROTHER IN HIS ATTEMPT TO GET TO ME. HE CLAIMS THAT THERE IS A PENDING LAWSUIT AGAINST MY SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER AND WITH A CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION. I KNOW THAT THIS IS A SCAM BECAUSE THE FIRST THING I DID WAS CALL BY BLOCKING MY PHONE NUMBER AND ASKING FOR SAM PETERSON, AND THE GUY THAT ANSWERED THE CALL HAD THE SAME VOICE AS THE GUY THAT LEFT THE MESSEGE IN MY VOICE MAIL. I ASKED THE GUY WHO YOU REPRESENT AND HE WOULD NOT ANSWER, BUT HE TOLD ME HE WAS SAM PETERSONS SUPERVISOR. I WAS TOLD TO HOLD AND AFTER HEARING A LOT OF BACKGROUND NOICE FOR A FEW MINUTES "SAM PETERSON" TOOK THE CALL AND IT WAS THE EXACT SAME PERSON WITH THE SAME VOICE. WHATS SCARY ABOUT THIS IS THAT HE HAD MY SS# AND ADDRESS. I HAVE FILED COMPLAINTS WITH MY STATE ATTORNEY GENERALS OFFICE AND THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION AND IF IT KEEPS UP I MAY JUST GO TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND HAVE THIS INVESTIGATED.

I received a call on my cell phone today but the number that appeared was all 0's. I didn't answer the first time and he left half of a message and then he called right back 2 times in a row. I decided to answer it  on the 3rd call and it was some guy by the name of John Garsha. He said my name was a reference for someone that has a fraud case against them. He had a very thick accent with alot of background noise and I could hardly understand him. I asked him what this is in reference to and he said he ccouldn't give out that information because it's a legal mattter. He asked for my friends number so he can call him directly and I said "No". He said he's with CIL (he said it's a law firm). He asked me to have my friend call him by 1:00 that day or they won't be able to help him with his legal matter. Some of my friend's relative received the same call. It seems like they like to harrass people. So I'm pretty sure they won't stop calling me now. The number the man gave me to have him call back is 703-755-0213

I received a call and a voice message from a guy with a very thick accent saying something about my social security number, and how my case was going to court today. He said he was working with the government. I think he said he was calling from CIL, although I could barely understand him. He said his name was Sam Peterson, which was probably a fake name. I had no idea what he was speaking of. I called the number back to try and understand what he was talking about, and still couldn't really understand him. Two of my daughters also got the same call from the same number.
