This number showed up on my caller ID and I knew immediately it was a scam call (I've had so many since I became a victim of Identity Theft earlier this year).  I said "hello" and a male voice speaking with a heavy middle eastern accent said "May I speak to [my name/mispronounced]?"  I said "who is this"?  He said "this is Jack Martin and I am calling from the legal department at [some phony company name] and this is a serious legal matter."  I said "Jack Martin? Are you sure you are Jack Martin?  Or maybe you are Steve Martin? Or Dean Martin?"  There was a lot of background noise (obviously a call center of some sort).  I just continued talking without giving him a chance to speak.  I said "I know this is a scam and I am already working with the FTC, the FBI, the IRS, the CIA, and several local police agencies and they are recording and tracing all of my calls so we can find you, arrest you, and shut down your operation.  So just keep talking, because the longer you stay on the line, the easier it is to track you down."  He said "you can keep talking if that's what you want to do because this is a legal matter and you are in serious trouble."  And I said "no, I am not going to keep talking, I am going to hang up now and let the agents tracing this call do their job.  If you are at all smart, which I don't think you are, you won't call me again, because we're gonna get you."  Then I hung up and went online and put a block on this number with my land line provider.  Then I came to this website to file this report to help inform others who may be receiving these calls.

Normally, when these phone numbers appear on my ID screen, I simply pick up the phone after the first ring and immediately hang up.  Doing that two or three times in a row usually stops the calls because they think it is a nonworking number.  Just remember, if you do answer at all, they know it is a working phone and they will keep harassing you.  Makes me furious (they called at 8:05 am EDT) that this kind of thing goes on.  Maybe each of us reporting these calls can eventually get it all shut down.  Ha.

My father keeps getting calls from this number demanding our lawyer contact him immediately b/c his name and SS # are involved in a law suit, but the name does not match the SS# digits. When our lawyer did contact him, the caller hung up 2 times.

They just called me too!!!  I have had this happen to me for about 2 years now.  They get your information if you've ever filled out a online payday loan.  I love to screw around with these people.  I feel if your taking up my time...I'll take yours too.  DON'T EVER GIVE THESE PEOPLE ANY INFORMATION!!!  You can play with them but just don't touch!!!  I just got off the phone with them and they wanted to verify information.  All the information they had on me was correct, but I kept telling them that none of the information is correct.  They are very simple minded and get very perplexed!  LOADS OF FUN!!!

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:
