This is a scam. I got a call and had a very animated conversation with "Brad", which apparently resulted in my arrest which is about two and a half hours late (maybe it's Cali time, sense it was a Cali number, LOL). Then I wrote an irate letter to Sonic to complain about their collection tactics and this is what they wrote back:

"We're sorry to hear about the call you received.  There is a group of people who are calling from outside of the United States stating to be affiliated with Sonic Cash.  This group has no affiliation with our company, and you have no debt with them or us for that matter.  The tactics and threats they use, are to scare you into paying them,  which is an illegal tactic under the rules outlined in the F.D.C.P.A. (Fair Debt Collections Practices Act)  We ask that you report this phone call to Doug Zloto who is the Secret Service Agent from the Department of Homeland Security.  His phone number is 989-497-0580.  Again, we're sorry to hear you were contacted by these people, and please be assured they have no affiliation with our company.

Thank You
Sonic Cash

I suggest you leave a message too.

So it would appear that Steven, who had left some really frustrating and borderline threatening comments has deleted them.  I am fortunate enough to have copied the comments.  I also notice when I dialed the number it is now disconnected.

I received a call from "sonic bank" and was told that i owed 400.00 from a payday loan i took out in october of 2007.  I asked why there had been no interest added on, but all he did was change the subject and say he would take 200.00 instead, and if i didnt pay that he would send the authorities to my house and they "arent guys you wanna deal with, they are tough." I told him to send me proof of the loan through email or fax, and said he could not do that because he did not have that information in front of him, but he had my bank account, SS#, references from god knows what, and a few other minor things.  I told him to send the police to my work or house because i had proof that i didnt even have a checking account at that time when the loan was taken out.  He told me i had one last chance to make a payment or else i would be sued and arrested.  I told him i would post a payment at a later date, just to give me time to research it and change my accounts which i did, now when i try to call him back and scream at him it says number unobtainable or a busy signal when calling from any other phone. beware of this scumbag/s.

Has anyone received any response from state or local authorities?  I started to file a complaint with the State Attorney General's Office; however, this most recent post from "Steven" is threatening to me, and the Attorney General's Office requires you to dislose your address.  Normally I would have no problem doing that, but with this last post, I don't know if someone is just playing a prank or is truly a representative of this business.  I am going to see about filing a non-emergency police report as well.  Thanks to anyone who might know something.  James

Steven:

So how is it NOT a scam when I canceled my card and the payment didn't go through and they haven't bothered to call me back and ask why the card didn't authorize the $450.00?  Can you tell me which legigitmate, profit-driven business wouldn't call me back to find out why the money wasn't there?  Also, what legitimate business would not provide proof of the debt as is required by the Fair Debt and Collections Act.  Additionally, why would they not tell me which company they were collecting for?  Can you explain that to me?

I am not sure if you are just a bored web surfer or if you are really a representative for this business.  I sincerely hope you're not because what you have just written is beyond unprofessional.  Based on this last entry, I am compelled to file a complaint with the State Attorney General's Office.  I really think this kind of alleged abuse should be, at the very least, be evaluated.

Everyone, if you are receiving a call from a debtor for the first time, they should be more than willing to send you proof of the debt; it's required.  I could understand if you were playing a game and keep telling them you haven't received it...then they could probably balk at sending it over and over, but to be completely rude and belligerent is not only professional, but it isn't appropriate.  I encourage all consumers to use caution before just giving your credit/debit card over the phone.  Per my original post, I was really, really lucky...really lucky.  Thank you.

This is reason #18,332 why I love the World Wide Web.  Last week I got a call from these folks, and the gentleman's accent was such that I had a very hard time understanding him.  He informed me that he was calling on behalf of a payday loan I had taken out in November 2006.  (I noticed that several other entries on this page indicate the same month and year.)  I remember doubting the date because I did take a payday loan in 2005, so the date seemed wrong to me.  They were very belligerent and threatening legal action and serving papers; yet they didn't have my address, but I was so flustered and upset that I didn't think about that.  They stated I owed $900.00 and I told them I would not pay anything until I see a statement.  They said it was against the law and they could lose their job for doing that.  I asked for the number of the business that referred my account to their agency and they said they couldn't do that either.

Well, they said they would take $450.00 payment for it, so I agreed to that.  I gave them my debit card information over the phone for $450.00.  The next day I checked my account balance and the money had NOT been taken out.  I thought how odd that a collection agency would be so aggressive; yet they didn't immediately post the payment to the account.  Combing that concern with the fact that every time I called the telephone number I was immediately greeted with hold music and then the same man, I thought it warranted an online search.  I googled the 714.384.9647 and found this page...Needless to write, I immediately called my bank and canceled the card.  I am still not sure if this was a legitimate debt collector; however, I will be contacting the Better Business Bureau and State Attorney General's office.  I am lucky because if this isn't a legitimate number then I could have been out a lot of money.  I am lucky.  I think the trick is to work you into such a frenzy, make you flustered and if your credit isn't that great, you automatically think:  yep, I probably owe it...Not necessarily.  I believe the Fair Debt Collections Act requires proof of the debt...Oh and since I've canceled the card, I haven't had a phone call from them and the cancellation went through about 24 hours ago...that seems suspcious to me too.

I receieved a call today from 714-384-9647 and he claimed I owed money from some internet loan I took in 2006 and that this was my last chance to clear it up before they come to my home and get me. He kept asking me to verify information and I said I do not give my info over the phone. Also if you claim I owe you money mail me the documents you have regarding this and I will mail you my bank statements showing I do not owe you anything. He said he could not mail me anything because that was against the law. I said then come on by and my lawyer will handle everything and that's when he got nasty and informed that I had to pay it today or face the penalties. He claimed he was from Sonic Bank.

received a call on my cell from "Kevin Dsouza" at 714-384-9647 with an Indian accent. He said I owed $783 dollars for a $200 loan I supposedly took out Nov 20,2 006 over the Internet. When I explained that I hadn't taken any such loan, he shared my bank account number, my brothers name, my place of employment & the last 4 digits of my SSN.

He said my job & my credit were in jeopardy as they would send me to the "credential department" & legal action would begin.

I tried to explain I could show proof via my bank statements that I had never received any loan, & he said it wouldn't do me any good. But, I could make all of this go away if I paid at least half of the $783 with a debit or credit card. I told him I wanted to do some research before turning my bank card number over to him. He said he would begin legal action & hung up. A few minutes later, he called back & asked "if it was fine that he turned me over to their legal department",to which I said, fine.  Scary stuff...but I'm happy to know I'm not the only one they've targeted.

I received a call today similar to everyone else's.  They claimed I owe $1,500 from a payday loan taken out on November 26, 2006 - almost 2 years ago!  I was having financial difficulty at the time and didn't doubt that I borrowed the money, but I am certain I paid it all back (including horrific interest).  He had all of my information and told me I had 3 returned ACH transfers from my bank.  I told him he would have to send me copies of the loan application, proof of disbursement, and the returned ACH statements before I would pay him.  He said doing so was "against the law" and if I didn't take this "last chance to make good" it would be sent to their legal dept and I would be investigated at my work, arrested, and taken to court.  I told him to bring it on and I hope they're able to produce the proof in court.  I just found this site and I'm relieved that others have experienced the same thing, but now I'm mad that someone has all of my personal info.

I got a call from this number telling me the same things I happen to me on 9-26-2008. They had all of my personal information same routing number but wrong account number. I contacted the Missouri Division of Finance and the gentleman I spoke with says it is a scam. So he says if they call back to tell them that I will be waiting for the police to come arrest me. I also quoted the laws in Missouri Chpters. He gave me a number to call him back. His name was Michael Shwan. The call back number is 713-482-6949. This is a scam.

Scam artists.  How did these freaks get this info?  Verbally abusive and threatening.  I have filed complaints with the Police, FTC, State Attorney and my phone company.  I've also implemented a trace by *57 after the last time they called.  This initiates a trace of the call.  I have AT&T.  You may want to check with your provider.  The info is given to the police.  Keep in mind these are idle threats.  Just hang up or better yet, call them back and tell them the police are on the way...then hang up!
