I can't tell you what you should because I don't know your situation, but you should call them and work out an arrangement and they will probably dismiss the case and work with you directly. I would venture to say that you did not communicate with them and therefore they were forced to bring you in to court to have the conversation. Whatever you do Ronnie don't pretend like this issue does not exist. Hope that helps. Have a great day.

Debt Collector
Debt collector who called several times and never left a message. I finally was able to answer their call and let them know that they had the wrong number. They told me that the would update their records and not call again. Time will tell.

No, hiding or altering the ID to deliberately mislead people as to who is calling is illegal.

Hey Julia,

I actually was just served docs from this company, and they're suing me for a debt collection. What would be the best way to go about this? Contact them and try to settle to avoid going to court?

A little education for you ROWDY. Giving false information and name calling doesnt help anyone on here. "Caller ID spoofing is the practice of causing the telephone network to display a number on the recipient's Caller ID display that is not that of the actual originating station." Just because a company uses more than one phone number, doesn't mean they are spoofing. Is the company calling you from a number you can't reach them back at? If so, then if is spoofing.

Debt.  I have no debt and these b*****ds keep calling for someone that had the phone number 6 years ago.  I block the calls with caller id software.  I only get one call the a lot of blocks.  They move on to a new spoofed phone id.

BTW - Debt Troll, if these calls are legit why spoof the caller id?  Ooops.

Person on this number (714-427-4550) called our number many times. We told him that he got wrong numbers and nobody in our has the name that he wanted to speak to. He requested us to identify ourselves and he used a harsh language to intimidate each person in our family who picked up the phone.

Yef, that is actually good advice.  If you are dealing with a real collection company, there should be no reason why they couldn't respond to a validation, verification, or dispute by a consumer. I can tell you from my own experience being in debt, if you know the debt is yours and you receive the proof you requested, you are better off facing the responsibility. Hiring attorneys and stalling eventually leads to more wasted money, time, and a drain on your emotional health. Plenty of collectors have been in the same situation as any debtor, collecting is a a JOB filled by real people who can help fix a bad situation. Not all collection companies, and the collectors that work for them, are fake or bad, in fact most are legitimatley trying to help someone out of a situation they have been in themselves. Real companies do their business to help, not to harm.

*Just because I don't use my real name, doesn't mean I'm fake, just cautious like you and most internet users. You can call me what you like, but I care about people and my job. If you have any questions for a debt collector, I would be glad to help. Post it here. Have a nice day.

Once again the shill misses the point.
What advice are you referring to?  "Shill Alert" didn't give any advice - just called out the shills.
But *I* will give some advice... if a debt collector calls you claiming you owe a debt, demand that they mail you a debt validation letter proving that you owe the debt and that they are the owners of the debt.  No FDCPA-required validation letter means you don't owe them a dime.

Ok, I see you use your real name too "Shill Alert", so does that mean your post are lies? No, it just means you are mis-informing people who can get sued or end up paying more by following your advice. Here's a simple solution...If the debt is yours, pay it or find a way to make an arrangement with the company. Most companies are made up of humans who understand your situation and will work to resolve your account.

Debt Collector
I get messages from this number every day or so, and no one answers when I answer.  We have only had this number for a short time, and we do not owe anyone anything that's late, so it has to be for the people who had the number before we did.  However, no one answers when they call here, and when I try to call them, it either rings and rings, or goes to a recorded message that leads you around for a while with the hope that they will take your number off their list.  Then don't.  Apparently they must get paid for how many calls they make, not the results they get.

Facts are facts my friend, you can call them FAKE all you like. Bottom line is when you are in debt, there are ways to get out of it, but like most 'advice' on these boards, ignoring debt won't make it go away.
