We got a call today from this number.  She asked for my husband (I had a savings acct there but they unceremoniously closed it for unknown reasons).  She then proceeded to tell him she wanted to update his information (all he had was a ATM card, his name wasn't on the acct otherwise).  He told her they had closed my account and he was uncomfortable updating information over the phone.  She hung up.  Sounds a little fishy to me.

Telemarketer
this is HSBC, but they sometimes call for telemarketing to get you to sign up for their card. My daughter went to a PGA golf tournament and filled out a form for HSBC card so she could get a free something or other.. Never activated the card, never used it, cut it up and threw it away as soon as she got it in the mail.. That was years ago, I assume they are just trying to get her to use her card..  MOST all credit card companies will tell you they will never ask for your SS number or information over the phone or through email... So do not ever give such info over the phone or email.  If it is the fraud department they may ask you to confirm the last 4 digits of your SS or your DOB to identify you and then give you the information about fraud etc and why they called you or like was suggested you should call them back from the number on your card or statement to verify they are who they are.. Phone numbers can be spoofed..

After receiving a call from this number, I called back the general service number on the back of my credit card.  It turned out that somebody had fraudulently used my credit card.  I wouldn't ignore calls from this number.  Just play it safe like me and call back the number on your credit card.

I just got this same type of phone call. I let it go to my voicemail and they left me a detailed message as to who to call, number an even a reference number. It sounded shady to me so I called up the HSBC regular 800 number. I was informed that there was nothing that required a "Fraud" phone call and that my account was fine. They also informed me that this 877 number is a scam and should not be giving personal information out to them. HSBC never requires that type of personal information from anyone.

Call Center buildings have one to two numbers that show up on caller ID for out bound calls.  There are a number of departments in the Buffalo facility that could call you, including a fax machine.  The other poster is correct, when in doubt, call them back on a main number.  The person who asked for details "for their boss", you can not be given information on another persons account.  I hope it was not a transaction verification that could have saved time for him.  I hope this post helps others know it is HSBC and you can always call back a main number to protect yourself.

HSBC Security Investigations if you know the agent's name or extension:
1-877-375-2012

Their local call number:
1-716-841-4879

So the agent working on my fraud case (someone in South Africa trying to buy concert tickets)... his phone number would look like this:
1-716-841-XXXX

Since I had also received a paper document the week before, I recognized his number as being legit and his.

In short... always call THEM.

I am glad that I check all suspicious numbers that ring on my cell phone. I NEVER EVER give out my cell phone to anyone, and I do not answer 'UNAVAILABLE", "unknown". And, since I have NOT HAD any credit cards, or loans for the past 15 years,, I know this is definitely anything that I would respond to. Why these idiots call, when I am on a DO NOT CALL registry, I don't know. So, I will register this number on the do not call registry affiliated with my phone number and let them take action.  In case anyone wants to know--- EVEN IF THEY DO HAVE a business relationship (which in my case they don't), or you owe them, or they are tryiing to collect---- All you have to do is to make a statement to them: Do NOT call me again. And, legally they can't EVER call you again. I would get the exact time of the call written down, the person's name (and insist on both names and their ID numbers) to let them know you have specifically told them not to call. Then, go register their number with the donotcall registry. The company will have to send anything/everything in writing. The good news is they are put on notice that you are not accepting their harassing calls. And, even better, any communication with them is IN WRITING. And, "in writing" stands up in court. speaking as a mother of an Assistant State's Attorney

Prank Call
This IS telephone Fraud.
This number does belong to HSBC Corporate Security.
HOWEVER, the phone call is not from them.
I just spent a half-hour on the phone with HSBC Security trying to find out why HSBC would be calling me at midnight. Fact is, they did not call me for any reason.

Someone out  there is attempting to get through to people using the HSBC Caller ID and then pretending to be the Security Department. So obviously they are trying to get private secure information from you.

716 841 2424...called and hu, called back and hu again.  it may be hsbc....but sometimes multiple companies use the same number or it might be a spoof. spoofers use a special card to call your phone which shows a false number on caller id, not the actual number they're calling from. they can also change their voices with a spoof card...sound like a child, etc.  spoofing is illegal.

Got a call from 716-841-2424. The person ask for my name. Not having anyone that I am communicating with now from 716 area code. I immediately denied my name to the caller. The person hang up. The only 716 area code I could think of is with my bank HSBC. As a safety I immediately call up HSBC security department. I got in contact with their security rep who told me that they were calling me to verify some recent charges to my account. I verify the charges with them and also let them know that if I get blind calls like that I will not identify myself to protect my identity etc.  The rep commended me for taking that extra security step and contacting them immediately. The number 716-841-2424 is in fact HSBC security.  My advise to you all is to never identify yourself to any unknown calls or callers. They usually hang up immediately. If they presist I suggest you hang up immediately to protect your identity. I suggest whenever you get an unknown call you feel is suspicious. Hang up and follow up with a research on the number. I don't think you all want to be a victim of any fradualent crime. I know for sure I do not want to. Therefore protect yourselves and do not be too quick to give out your personal information over the phone.

it's definitely HSBC.  I charged plane tickets for a trip to Europe and a hotel in France on the same day and I usually don't use the card very often. I received a call from that number that left a message saying they were from fraud prevention.  I called back a different customer service number on the back of my card later that day and after getting the last 4 digits of my SSN they say "you must be calling about the fraud prevention call earlier" and then asked if I had authorized those purchases and that was all.

The number IS real. They just called me (that is why I'm here of course) and it was the "fraud protection division". It seems in an effort to protect you (and them mostly of course)they have become very active in verifying your card usage. That is why they asked all the personal information, to make sure you are the card owner and not just someone who got their hands on it.
I being a suspicious person called them back using the number on the back of my card and asked them to transfer me directly. They verified they had just called me and they verified the number I was called from and the number (a different number) they left on my message machine to call them back on.

Recieved a call on my cell phone from 716-841-2424. Caller identified himself as "George from HSBC" and asked to confirm personal information. I did not provide this information and instead inquired as to how I could be sure this call was from HSBC. He stuttered and fumbled around to give me the 800 number and extension for customer service (which were correct when I double checked online). I thanked him and HE politely ended the call ... having never confirmed the information he was calling for. This whole thing feels suspicious ... but when I called the 716 number back it is a local HSBC number.
