I received a suspicious voicemail message from 800-852-1181, went online and saw your post, and also found the website "myfedloan.org  after a search for "Fed Loan Servicing".
If PHEAA is a client of yours as you say, do your client a big favor and tell them to improve their website and their computerized phone voicemail messages.  Their phone message sounds like a total scam.  There is nothing immediately apparent from their website to assure people who have been called as "references" that the call is legitimate.  Their voicemail message should refer people to their website for more information, and should refer to a webpage that contains a callback number and further details of legitimacy.
For now it still sounds like a scammer is trying to steal personal information by pretending to be some servicer of federal loans.

I keep getting phone calls from this number as well, however I know PHEAA is a valid student loan service as both my husband & I have student loans through them. My problem is this...I'm still in school so I have no idea why they'd be calling me on my private phone. They never leave messages & I swear they hire people you came understand & it must be a requirement for them to be rude with no compassion.

I think there is an employee at that agency trying to commit fraud. And I also think that the PHEAA should be by now requesting an investigation of that phone number clearing their name while helping a lot of people avoid be scammed

UNWANTED CALLS FROM 717-720-1580

Here's synchronicity for you:

I came home from an out-of-town trip today to find a message on my machine from 800-852-1181 (which is a toll-free version of the same line at 717-720-1580).  The caller mentioned that a person applying for a loan had given my wife as a reference.  I don't recognize the name of the borrower, but I haven't yet asked my wife if she knows who it is.

The strange part of all of this is that the reason I was out of town was because I happened to be visiting a client of mine who uses my company's products and services:  PHEAA.  PHEAA (The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency) serves Pennsylvania students, but they also have two other subsidiaries that service loans around the country:  AES and FedLoan.  They are all the same corporate enitity (it has about 11,000 employees) and they are an absolutley legitimate business, and an agency of the Pennsylvania state government.

The FedLoan division services some direct loans, but they also service loans on behalf of many lenders, including most of the large national banking institutions, other state and federal loan agencies and other lenders.  You might take out a student loan with Bank of America, for example, who has in turn contracted FedLoan to service it.

The bottom line is this:  While the advice above about being circumspect with the information you share over the phone is very sound, in this particular case I know with confidence that FedLoan is a real company, and it is resonable to assume that they are gathering information for legitimate purposes.

Received this call today and caller ID said it was P.H.E.A.A.  A recorded message by a muffled voice said to call a certain number for further information.  It is a student loan business in Pennsylvania.  Funny thing, haven't been in college for over 50 years and never applied for a student loan.  Doesn't sound legit to me.

I have PrivacyStar and it came up on my phone as P.H.E.A.A., I have student loans out but not with this company.  I reported it and blocked it.  If you have a smartphone, you got to get the PrivacyStar App, the caller ID feature is very nice and then just block away if you choose.

They left no message which is the reason I blocked them, I hate when business calls and doesn't leave a message.

This company just called my sister trying to get info on me, of course she did not give it out. They are trying to say that they are a student loans collections agency but if they were they would have already had my information. Pls be careful when answering calls from numbers you do not recognize.

Caller from "Bedlam Servicing" wanting current address and phone number for a former employee who left our company at least 3 years ago. We don't have that information and if we did, I would not give it out. Ridiculous call and request. As soon as I became suspicious and started asking the caller questions, he hung up on me.

(Location: South Texas) Same message about Bedlam Servicing wanting to update records.  I don't plan to call back.  I never give my personal info over the phone unless I call first (meaning I want something).  If they are a legit company then they will have other ways of figuring this stuff out if they need it.  Rule of Thumb: If it sounds fishy then it probably is.  ***or your sense of smell and hearing are mixed up :P***

They keep calling me too.  Thing is, both federal student loans I have out are serviced by two other legit companies, and I called those companies to confirm that they indeed have my loans.  Also, this company only knows my name and phone number, and they keep calling for more info. The two legit comapnies that have my loan had all the info they needed to begin with and sent me a letter that stated such.  They didn't keep calling telling me that they wanted more info. Just food for though.
