Real police are not allowed to take "donations". That is called a bribe. Next time they call, put them on hold and call the police on your cell phone. P.S. You could also call your local news station and let them in on this scam.

Received a caller claiming to represent NYS Police Conference asking for a donation to help support the "fallen hero's" etc.
Said they would send out a mailing if I agreed to commit to a donation of $10.00.  When I agreed, the call was then transferred to a women who wanted to confirm my address and what credit card I would be using to pay.  I hung up the call.

(516) 986-0747 was the number I got a call from. They wanted my card info for a "small donation of $15" I said no and to mail me the info, but now, after reading your comments they may come to my house!! I'm scared! I don't want people coming here! he was pushy on the phone but they said nothing about coming here. I just called the NY Police Commission from pcny.com and left a message to inform them of this. I can't believe this goes on...

I believe PCNY is a legitimate organization - but to call and harrass a small business 4 times a day with an attitude is not the way to ask for a cash donation. Wondering if who had called us recently and has been annoying us for 3 weeks calling more than 4 times a day is someone posing as PCNY - coming in person to pick up checks and sending photo copied paperwork and fax letterheads that were stolen and are reused for scamming people out of money. Why can't we send the check to the office on the PCNY website? They said NO. I'm not being harrassed into giving $100 for hush money just to leave us the hell alone!

I received a call from 5169862410, claiming to be from the police commission of ny. He was explaining their work as I googled the organization. Then I figured I'd just ask more questions. I asked him to repay the name of his organization and then politely said, I have never heard of this group and that my brother is a detective. He hung up without giving more information. A legitimate organization would have gladly given me more information.

I received a phone call from 914-337-2663 and they claimed they were representing the Police Conference of New York. Since I donated in the past to PBA I said ok, What seemed very odd to me is that PBA always sends requests for donations thru mail never in person. I knew something was murky when the guy said he will pick up the check in person. He came today and he showed me some ID that was cheaply printed out and he informed me that for $500.00 I would get a badge and two decals for the car. No offense, but I was not born yesterday. I knew it was BS and I just asked him to leave. He got all fussy about it and in two minutes somebody else called me from a different number asking me what happened. BEWARE of this scammers. Do not let them fool you.

Legitimate organizations will usually cheerfully provide answers to any questions asked. If asked whether they are a (501)-C organization, they can say yes or no. If asked exactly what it is they do, a legitimate organization will usually tell you.
You state that people are entitled to their own opinions, but not their own set of facts. You state that this organization has been accredited for over 50 years, and that people have no right to disparage such a legitimate organization.
Looking at some of the comments, people are forming the conclusion that this organization is a scam based on the reaction of the caller to their legitimate questions.
Some of the questions are:

Are you a (501)-c?   This is the most common type of charitable organization. People do need to know if their donation will be onside red deductible by the IRS.

What Police organizations do you represent?  Seems like a reasonable question to me, and it is an opening for the caller to then go on and volunteer information about where the money goes.....causes, etc.

What callers DON'T have a right to do is be rude. If asked questions, reacting by hanging up simply cements the feeling that the call was an attempted scam.

Also, every organization by this time has a web site. We are after all well into the 21st Century. I recently got a phone solicitation, asked for he URL, and was hung up on. Not good. I then got a follow up letter thanking me for my pledge of $20. Actually, I simply asked for a letter as I generally don't respond to telephone solicitations. Aside from stating I made a pledge that I did not, in fact make, the letterhead lists no website. Again, not good.

So, if you are in fact a legitimate organization, I suggest you clean up your act.

You are entitled to choose not to give to PCNY. You are also entitled to hold an opinion that it is conducting a scam to get your money. You are NOT entitled to your own set of facts and to slander a legitimate organization that has filed with the IRS and NY Department of State since 1960:

http://www.guidestar.org/organizations/14-146 ... e-new-york.aspx

Many not-for-profits outsource phone fundraising operations to companies that specialize in those operations. There are probably good and bad eggs in the lot. Calling back and getting a call center will not necessarily confirm that the you are being scammed.

Engage brain before opening mouth.

Years ago I fell for this scam and gave a donation. Same MO, asked for me by name, like they knew you, and said they where from the Police Conference of NY. What I previously read about this group is that little if any money goes to any police organization. Now I just politely say "sorry buddy" & hang up on them.

Yesterday I got a phone call from some guy (Ken) claiming to represent the Police Conference of NY (PCNY).  Oh, he sounded so caring and considerate.  Explained they are a lobby group that represents over 25,000 police officers in NYS.  They fight for tougher laws, especially those that protect our children, etc?.  I told him I don?t give over the phone; fax me something.  So he did, but interesting that the fax came with no cover sheet just a sticky note from "Tim".  Something just didn?t feel right.  I did look them up on the web and got a web page that basically supported what he said on the phone.  But, again something didn?t feel right.  So, I called an 877 # listed on the fax this morning and a guy answered ?Good Morning?  That was it.  No, company name, nothing.  So, I explained that I was solicited yesterday and that I would be unable to participate.  He said, ?Ok, I will pass that message on.  What is your company name?? So I told him and we ended our call.  Not two minutes later, my phone rang.  It was the guy that called yesterday.  I said, ?I just called the number you gave me and said that I would not be participating.?  He said, ?Oh, OK? and he hung up on me.  I called the NYS State Police to see if this is a legit organization and the trooper that answered was absolutely no help.  She said she didn?t know and gave me the attitude that she could care less.  You would think if they represent 25,000 NYS police officers, she would have heard of them.   Anyway, I?m convinced this is a scam.  Don?t donate to PCNY.

Man wanted donation to police officers conference.  Asked him if it was for city police.  Thinking I might donate if it included state troopers. He said you have lots of police officers in your town.
ASked where he was calling from. He said it was based in Albany, n.y.  Told him I wasn't interested and hung up. He called right back and wanted to know why. I told him I didn't live in Albany and hung up again.
I don't know the number he called from.

I got a phone call from police conference of new york  wanted me to donate for the police. The guy knew my name and wanted me to donate $20.00 I told him I did not have $20.00 Well he manage to get me to pay $15.00. He was pushy. Few days later I got a letter in the mail and of the $15.00. Well I did nothing then the reminder letter came. I still have no money to give.I check out the website. The address was not the same that was given in the letter. Then I look at the envelope that came in. It was mailed from Cleveland Ohio. I suspect this is a scam. I threw the letter in the basket.I look on the Id call on my phone.I do not see that phone number. Scammers
like to call as a charity call to dupe people in to donating. I am not paying the $15.00 for donation thinking it is a scam. I look in BBB site No such charity listed. I went to FTC never heard of pcny. I take no chances.

I got a call from someone claiming to be representing the PCNY around Christmas time last year. He asked to speak to the owner of the house, by name (probably out of the phone book). My dad's English is poor, so he gave me the phone.

The guy on the other end was extremely fishy. I asked if the charity was tax deductible, and he said no, they were not an 501(c). I then asked him to send me a printed brochure of their organization, and he said they only mail out brochures to donors. this way, they don't give you any evidence to use against them or turn over to the Better Business Bureau or other investigative authorities.

if you get a call from these guys, tell them to eff off. it's a scam.

Greg Kirk called and claimed he was calling on behalf of Police Conference of New York. He said he was repesenting this nonprofit organization and asking for a donation. When I asked for his phone number because the person he asked for was out he became very agitated and rude and hung up. This seems suspicious!
