Definitely legit! I applied online a few days ago for SS benefits. This morning, caller had all info I supplied, and had some questions for me. He was helpful as he offered some options that I was able to take advantage of. He told me about "spousal benefits", and had my wife's SS benefits numbers.
I am very very careful with unsolicited calls, but this time, all good!

Now I am just waiting for the long waited for check.

They called 5 times today before I decided to finally answer.

I was told it was from the social security office out of New York and was asked to verify my home address.

The CID was displayed as U S GOVERNMENT with the phone # of 718-557-3000.

The guy was way to happy go lucky and told me that this was not a telemarketer, like I was going to believe that.

He asked me if I was sitting down, and that?s when I really became suspicious.

Keep in mind that I have been waiting for a while for my back pay from SSDI so I felt that I should listen to what he had to say.

Then he started to tell me way more information then any telemarketer/scammer should or would know.
Information like how much my back pay would be, who represented me, what my monthly check would be and how much I would be paying for Medicare.

If this is a SCAM, then there is a major problem with the system.
Going to call Social Security and the company who represented me tomorrow and will post the results.
I am praying that this is legit.

I applied for SS 2 days ago - today I receive a call from this # with a message to call an 866 # - I called the 866# and the first thing they asked for was my SS# - I refused to provide it - then I called SSA to verify this # - they advised not to give any proprietary information over phone, but did indicate (after  asked fort he third time) that this 866# was a SS phone #

My caller ID showed it was from the U S Government.
I tried calling that number several times only to get a recorded message which said your call did not go through.
Please try again.

If I was you, I'd phone your local Social Security office in the morning, and speak to them. Tell them about the call you received, and explain that a site online suggested it may be a scam to collect personal information. They will be able to help you get the person you need to speak to.

Since my local office knew nothing about this, I called social security's 800 number, sat on hold for 50 minutes, but found out that the agent left a note on my account saying he did make a "courtesy call" to me. The woman who checked this for me explained that the number you see on caller ID is a trunk number that you cannot call back. This is for the representatives security. Big weight off my mind.

I applied for my ss benefits on 9-04 & rec'd a call from this # on 9-06. They left no msg or a call back #. Since I do not live in the NYC area, I'm puzzled as to why ss in NYC would call me! If they call again, I'm simply going to tell them I'll call my local ss offi e. With all the scams taking place, I trust no one that requests personal info over the phone.

This is a legit number.  Got a call about an online application I did with SSA and they called me about a discrepancy.  I gave them the answer and when I hung up noted that the caller's# was 718 557 3000 and it was not a working number when i called it.

I got real paranoid and called SSA to report this and the person at SSA told me her records showed that a call was made to me about the same discrepancy.  She gave me a number to call in Jamaica which is the SSA site for their website applications.  The person who answered told me that 718 557 3000 is a scrambled number as they cannot handle the volume of call backs.and do not want to make their number public.

I originally thought this was a scam, but unlike those who say it is a scam #, I actually followed up with SSA on this. The # is legit!!  No scam.

I got a call from this number (718) 557-3000  on a Saturday afternoon at 1:58 pm A Mr. Schlam left voice mail to call him back M - F at another number. I couldn't get through on Saturday. Phone was first a fax line, then busy, then said it was Social Security. It said they were open Mon - Friday 7 am - 5 pm. When I tried to call the 718 number above I kept getting a busy signal. I will call Social Security directly on Monday. Do not trust this call which came from NY, even though it said US Government on Caller ID.

This is infact a legit phone number fromSocial Security.  I called them this afternoon regarding a recent application, in the middle of the call I was disconnected.  I waited a minute to see if they would call right back(they did not) .  I got in the shower and missed a call from this number, which led me to this website.  While reading all of the posted messages, I recieved another phone call.  When I answered it, it was the same gentleman I had spoken to earlier.  He had the information I was looking for, and told me that he would be updating my my scocial security acct on the SSA website.  By the time we were off the phone, the website did in fact reflect the changes.  As others have said, if you are concerned about it, call you local SS office, or thier toll free number, and ask someone there to help you, but my experience is that it is infact a real number, with no scam involved.

Applied for retirement on 5-9-2013, and on saturday morning , husband answered a call from 718-557-3000 and wanted to talk to me and I was not home so she said to call back Monday to 866-226-2306 . After Google numbers , It didn't look good. She said she was in New York  . Is this how S/S works , or am I in trouble with these people ?

I  received a call from this number and the person left a name which was Kevin and he was from Social Security and left a 866 area code number for call back.  The caller ID was the US Government and the 718 number was unreachable.  I tried the 866 number and it was a fax machine.  This happened a day after I applied on line for Social Security.  The person hasn't called back.  Very suspicious.

I received a call from 718-557-3000 which I didn't recognize. My husband also received a call from this no. and a voicemail was left. It is a legitimate no. for Social Security in Queens, NY. A different no. was left on my husband's voicemail to call them back. We spoke with John who was very helpful in getting us ready to start taking our Social Security now. He told us our application no. which we had just filled out. We had just filed online last week (2/2/13) for me and my husband filed on Monday (2/4/13). That is excellent service from Social Security and do not be afraid to answer the call from the 718-557-3000 no.
