After 20 calls with no messages, I had read these posts.  The # 718-563-3261 called me asking for a name of a person who isn't associated with our #.  I told him that, and he got very angry and told me to eat SH#T you B####.  Very professional, yes???? What a bunch of low life losers.

Got a call today from this number and no message was left.  I called the number back and it answered American Express, please have your 15 digit card number available. It then asked me to enter the number. I hung up.  Sounded legit to me...except for the fact that I don't have a card.

I got this call this afternoon at 12:00 p.m.  They claim they are from American Express.  They are listed as Heshy Botknecht.  I called back and they wanted my credit card number in which I replied how do I know you are from American Express?

They are AmEx trying to collect on an overdue, but not delinquent, bill. Any time you don't pay by the due date, but before the next statement drops, you'll get this call. If you don't have an AmEx, I am betting someone who does have an AmEx used to have your telephone number. Cell companies recycle numbers more quickly than ever, so this is a common problem.

I have been getting calls from this same number..... claiming to be Amex. I don't have an Amex card. All they seem to want was my card number and to  discuss an unpaid balance. Of course I could pay over the phone with my checking account number.... When I told them I do not have an account they told me I was lieing.

They claimed to be from AMEX claiming an unpaid balance of >$9k. They knew that my dad's card was Platinum, they also knew that I was listed as a cardholder on the account.

The man on the phone had a deep, well dictated phone speaking voice and sounded very professional. I knew something was up when they called ME about the account at all, as it's my parent's account. He spoke with the vocabulary of a support operator, and otherwise seems well versed in social engineering.

So glad I googled this number

This same phone number has been calling me for the past three days (12/27/08 through today 12/29/08) only once leaving a pre-recorded voice mail directed at no one claiming to be American Express with an "important business matter" and to please call immediately with my AmEx card number.

Do these a$$hole scammers really think people are that stupid?

I got the same called from the same guy with an accent. When I called back he picked up, I asked him to remove my number from their calling list and that was the end of that. I did not give any card information or ask why they were calling, I told him I did not have an account (which I do but after reading all these posts can see its a scam) he promised I would get no more calls. My Amex account is in good standing so there would be no reason to call me and especially at work, I do not think I gave my work account to Amex.

Actually, it is American Express.  I initially had the same suspicions as you, and when I first called the number for American Express that is on the back of my card, they said it wasn't one of their numbers.  But the calls continued, so I called them again and asked if they could contact the number to see if it was legitimate.  They were able to confirm that it was one of the phone numbers for their Account Services department.  They were able to confirm also that I was not the person they were looking for and they even put notes to that effect all over the computer.  Unfortunately, the calls have continued - and this morning they even had the nerve to call my cell phone! It's absolutely maddening!  If I wasn't a customer, I might be able to sue them for annoying me like this.  Still, I'm documenting every call, and if it comes down to it, I will sue them for the times they have made me late for work with this nonsense, putting my job in jeopardy.  I've had it with these jerks!

This is one of several numbers that have come up on my caller ID, which have come from American Express.  They keep calling to collect a debt I do not owe on a "blue card," which I do not have.  I contacted the American Express number on the back of my Platinum card, and have complained several times. They have put notes all over the computer saying that I am not the person they are looking for, and have even called one of the numbers and told them this and have told them to stop calling me - and yet still the calls continue!  This morning, they even called my cell phone!  They do not seem to understand the concept of more than one person having the same name, and so they apparently contact everyone in the country who has the same name as the person they are looking for - and they don't stop calling - EVER!

NEVER give your credit card number when you did not solicit the initial contact!
This is a phishing scam and is NOT from American Express. This phone number seems to be from a cell phone or landlines with disguised caller-ID info, even saying "American Express" on your ID screen. These scammers are relentless and will call 2 to 3 times a week, and usually 3 times during the day & evening, for months at a time.
The prerecorded message is always the same:

"THIS IS AMERICAN EXPRESS CALLING ABOUT A VERY IMPORTANT BUSINESS MATTER, YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER IS URGENTLY NEEDED BY THE END OF THE DAY, PLEASE CALL US AT 1-800-678-0738, AND PLEASE HAVE YOUR AMERICAN EXPRESS ACCOUNT AVAILABLE WHEN YOU CALL, WE CAN BE REACHED 24 HOURS A DAY, THANK YOU."

There are many people reporting this scam on various consumer complaint websites. American Express has verified that it is NOT them. (Call American Express using the number on the back of your card and see for yourself.)

IF YOU RECEIVE HIS/THEIR CALL, MAKE NOTE OF IT (day & time called, phone number used), AND REPORT IT TO THE FOLLOWING FEDERAL AUTHORITIES:

This is a scam. Don't answer. They are looking for your checking act information. They masquerade as AMEX, but they are con-artists. If you accidentally answer, tell them to F-off.

I do not have an Am Ex account.  When I finally reached a person, "Blake" was rude, wouldn't let me speak and was indifferent.  I told him all I needed was the number removed.  He said it could take weeks or longer since it is a computer calling and not a person.  I told him I have asked 6 times to have it removed and have spoken to a supervisor to have it removed 4 times.  He laughed and said, 6 or 4, what is it lady?  I asked him if he was listening to me at all.  He told me he couldn't submit the request untilt he end of his shift and he wasn't in NY like his number said.  He was in Phoenix and it was lucky I got him and not somebody in India (!).
Call the real Am Ex 800 number and speak with a person to see what is going on.  The woman there told me she was shocked that anyone from Am Ex treated me this way, but it seems like this NY number is the key to bad service and rude employees.
