They have called several times. I never answer unsolicited calls. My voice mail will say leave a message or text to receive a reply. Then block #s that do not leave a message. Simple.

Wished I had read this before I did just what you told me not to.  The first caller I turned down and then Goggled "Microsoft Tech Support" and was given a number of 800-939-9961.  Seeing that I initiated this call I thought it would be trustworthy...I now have my doubts and am afraid to turn my computer on at all.  I'll probably be taking it to the Geek Squad for help.  But first I'll run a scan in safe mode

Very disappointing that we can't even trust a Goggle search anymore.

I received a call from this number saying that they were Microsoft Tech Center and they have been received error reports from my computer (foreign guy)...wanted to take control and help clean it up.  I refused but got to thinking that I have had several error messages and a few other issues.  My Antivirus is Viper and it runs on a scheduled basis.

I Googled Microsoft Tech Support and call the number listed (800-939-9961) and they ansere.  Explained the above and asked if it could be legitimate.  He said he had a way of checking remotely to see if there were any issues.  Seeing that I initiated the call I figured it would be okay.  He brought up a Windows log that showed over 24,000 issues in red.  Then he checked Viper's record and said that someone had gotten into several systems.  He offered to send me to his high level tech support and they would be able to take care of this for only $189.90 a year.  I told him no thanks I'll take it to the Geek Squad.  However, in further reflection this person could have put up a false screen.  I hung up and turned my computer off...I will not run a scan in safemode and maybe that will give me some clarification.

Below is a copy n paste from another forum explaining the scam:-

I get these phone calls about one a week. Last time, I was ready for them: I had a machine set up with a clean XP installation, so I played dumb to see what they would do.

They pose as "Windows Support Centre", or suchlike, and say that they've been receiving reports from your computer that there's a problem. You'll probably be asked how old the machine is - however old it is, seemingly, you'll be told that the warranty on your Windows software has expired, or that you should have taken one out when you bought it. Then, you'll be talked though opening something called the Event Viewer, and shown a screen that contains a number of warnings and errors. They will tell you that this is serious, even to the extent that it's causing problems that might force your ISP to cut your connection and/or inform the police.

Let's stop here and make two points:

1. There may well be something called a "Windows warranty". However, I have been a Microsoft Partner for nearly a decade, and I've never heard of such a thing. I think we can assume that if such a thing existed, Microsoft would be sending me lots of information on how I can make money selling it. They haven't, because there isn't.

2. I've never seen an Event Viewer that didn't have warnings and errors, and I've been a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer since 1999. Its function is to keep a record of everything that happens to the operating system so that people like me can find out what's happening if something has gone wrong. Most of the time, though, there's nothing to be alarmed about - in my case, most of the warnings were due to a printer not being found on the network because I'd switched it off.

OK, so the next stage is that you get passed to the "Technical Department". This is where it got interesting: I was told that a six digit support number was being generated so that my problem could be resolved, and I was directed to a website called logmein123, where I could enter this number. Now, this is a common tool used by people like me to fix machines over the network - clients call me with a problem, I can connect to the machine and show them what to do without having to leave my office. In this case, they were going to "fix" my machine. So I let them in. At this point, we will pause for a warning:

WARNING: DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME ON YOUR MACHINE. I WAS GIVING THIS GUY COMPLETE ACCESS TO MY COMPUTER. HE COULD DO ANYTHING HE LIKED, TRANSFER FILES TO INSPECT AT LEISURE, ETC. I WAS USING A MACHINE WITH NOTHING ON IT BUT THE OPERATING SYSTEM. REPEAT: DO NOT LET ANYONE YOU DO NOT KNOW AND TRUST ONTO YOUR SYSTEM IN THIS WAY.

The first thing was that as soon as he connected, I could see the IP address he was connecting from, and I was able to trace this back to a company name, and trace the company back to its offices in Mumbai. While I was doing this (on another machine), I was watching a rather nasty piece of software being uploaded to my machine and installed. A bit of fiddling around, and I was asked to try running a few programs. Lo and behold, they all crashed with frightening looking error messages - remember, this was a machine that was working perfectly a few minutes before. This was explained as a consequence of the problems that I was having before, and that the diagnostic program they were running was now blocking programs that could get me into trouble.

This was the point at which I was asked for money - they started at £100 to fix the problem I already had, with an additional £80 for a simple one year warranty to protect me in the future, or if I preferred, I could give them £299 for an all-in package including fix, anti-virus software and a five year warranty. Visa and Mastercard accepted. If I didn't want to go ahead, then I wouldn't be able to do anything with it until it was fixed.

At this point I let him know what I was doing, complete with telling him the name and address of the company he was working for. I expected him to hang up on me, but he decided to argue with me, at one point telling me that I wasn't an MCSE and I didn't know what I was talking about. In the end, I just told him that if he had been in this country, he could expect to be arrested, and hung up on him.

So, in summary, I wasted my time in this way so you don't have to. If these pirates call you, don't say a word. Just put the phone down.

This is a scam, once you follow the callers directions and get on line they then capture all the data from your computer.  Phishing in a new format.  Do not give them any information and do not let them connect to your computer.  They get the phone numbers the same way you posted this comment.  online.

I wouldn't let anyone have remote access to my computer by suspecting they can do whatever they want and delete important files or install viruses. Don't give any personal information. Ask them questions regarding the company they represent and how did they get your information and ask for their phone number to return the call and hang up the call. Scams nowadays are becoming more sophisticated and you never know what to expect.

Person  with some type of accent called and told me to get on my computer because he had received notifications from my computer suggesting that it had a virus, I worked the overnight shift and he had woken me up with his phone demanding that I get on my computer immediately so that he can help clean up the virus, I told him I would not get on my computer as I was not quite awake yet. He was very pushy and said he would call back later and to make sure I was there so that I could then get on my computer and he could fix it. I screen my computer daily and do not trust this person at all!

This is a India Mobile number.  It has nothing to do with microsoft corporation.  So it is a scam, and should be treated as such.  Be careful and pass it on to stop others from being scammed.  I was never even slightly convinced by his India accent.  I knew, like the comment above, that Microsoft would never call me on their own.  They always have access that they need with their updating capabilities.  So be very cautious my friends.

They called me too.  They said they were from microsoft, and I questioned their integrity.  I decided to play along for awhile.  They convinced me to let them remotely control my computer.  But before that, they didn't even know what kind of computer I had.  I thought that was odd enough, but I played along as they tried to convince me that an error report was viruses on my computer and they were surprised my computer still worked.  They tried to delete permanent files on my computer and the computers safeties came on, and then they deleted some log entries saying it was viruses.  They said they could not fully delete the viruses without taking my computer back to it's original state and making me pay $199.00 for protection and registry repair programing.  I immediately disconnected their remote access and removed the program from my computer after telling them I did not trust them and hanging up on them.  Microsoft does not have to call you to repair your computer unless you have requested it.  They will never call you on their own.  So know it is a scam if someone should call with these claims.

I too have been receiving several calls from someone with an East Indian accent claiming to be from Microsoft certified 360 support, saying that they have been receiving online errors from my PC. I've asked them how do I know you are actually a Microsoft employee, and they then stated that they are not MS employees. They refuse to send email with the error information to me, only want to deal with me on the phone and try to get me to go online on my PC & follow their instructions. I don't know how they accessed my name & phone since I attempt to stay very private with this info. This is the fourth unsolicited call of this type from this individual I've received over the last couple weeks.
