I got the same 2 email messages from "Coney family" (re: Thursday is his day off and a FL phone #) and the ". . . ok with condition and price and will arrange for pick up . . . additional $30 . . . " when trying to sell an antique sofa. The other thing I noticed in the emails was that the command of the English language seemed to go from decent to bad. This also set off a red flag. My husband and I suspected fowl play and that's how I found this internet series of posts. Thanks so much for sharing (and sorry to those that got scammed)! If he's smart, he's following these posts and he won't bother to email me again-- I just sent him some more questions about how the funds were being sent to me.
To "just," if it really was a "certified bank check" that he sent you, then the issuing bank should be responsible for the money-- but that won't help you recover any portion that you wired to him.
This is the text of the last email he sent:
Hello, Thanks so much for your swift response and patience, my payment has been delivered, i have notified my movers about that. Kindly go ahead to deposit and cash it from your bank and the fund will be available to you immediately or 24 hours. Once you have the funds at hand, deduct your total amount for my purchased item, then withdraw the balance and wire it through your nearest Money Gram outlet to the movers coordinator headquarter below, once the transfer is sent they will
contact you so as for them to arrange pick up from your doorstep.
And below is the movers coordinator information provided by my movers to send the funds through Money gram Transfer in your area.
Receivers 's Name; Gavin Halloway
Address; 2922 Monroe St
City; Columbia,
State; SC
Zip code; 29205
Note; You are to deduct the sending charges from the balance before sending and not from your money, once you complete the transfer, email me the below information on the receipt.
1) THE REFERENCE #
2) Total Amount Sent after deducting the western union charges for a minute service
3) And Exact Senders name and address used at Money Gram when filling the
Money Gram form
So, I will be waiting for the above Money Gram transfer details as soon as its being sent in order for me to forward it to the pick up Coordinator and they will be giving you a call to discuss with you the best time to come for the pick up.
I will be waiting to read from you as soon as possible
Thank you

I got the exact same message for a craigslist ad in Appleton, WI. I asked for information to verify his identity before I gave him anything. Scam.

This was sent as an email for a dining set I'm selling on Craig's list. It seemed suspicious because they commented they wanted to see the " item listed above" which is usually a scam. This is the email I received as follows....

Hello,
Good information, I had someone post something for me and they didn't check the "No Email" box to sift refuse like this one out. So I will be sure to send a horrible email their way.

The owner of this number responded to a Craigslist Ad, asking that I call him or her. The ad was posted here in Honolulu. Feels like a scam.
