Debt Collector
I received a call that showed up on my cellular phone as RESTRICTED.  Anytime I get restricted calls, I usually ignore them, but I answered the phone by saying: "Hello, and why are you showing up on my phone as a RESTRICTED call?  He answered me by saying he was with American Finance.  He (with a foreign accent) stated that he wanted to inform me that I had been approved for a loan of $3,000.  I told him I didn't need $3,000.  He asked me how much did I need, and I stated I only needed $5,000.  He gave me a loan confirmation number and THIS telephone number.  He told me to call right away, and that I would have the loan deposited into my account within an hour.
Well..... first flag for me was someone calling me with an accent, sounding like he was in another country.  The second flag for me was the company's name (American Finance) which I felt should have been an American calling me, not someone who you could barely understand!  I told him thanks and hung up.
I didn't call 727-827-8760, instead I googled this number and landed on this page!  Five (5) minutes later, my phone started ringing off the wall!  I picked up the second call, (not restricted) and they told me I was approved for $4,000.  I told them I had already received a call regarding an approved loan, and I was not interested.   My phone rang for at least an hour, with all kinds of different phone numbers that I did not recognize.
I am so sorry that you all were taken by these unscrupulous people (scammers), and the only advice I have for all of you is to get with the Federal government's website and report this incident.
In the meanwhile, I am going to get in touch with American Finance and inform them that they have scammers that are using their company's name to scam people.
Lesson here: NEVER give out your sensitive information to strangers.  ALWAYS have them give you your information for verification.  This way, if they already have the information, you know they may be legit.  I would still get their phone number and call them back, just to make sure that the person that called did call from a legit company.

If anyone is interested in joining me to see if we can get these scammers, please contact me with your name and phone number.  I will add you unto my list to American Finance, and let them know, along with a list that I will be submitting to the Federal government's website.

Debt Collector
Your anxiety was understandable, and your decision to stall on payment was wise. I did glance at the number thread and website before responding. That "Dan Grant" has provided a lot of homework reading a few days ago. I haven't had the time to peruse, but that much research may be worth examination and point you to hidden resources.

The S&L promo site is a fairly typical slap-up with entire sections "coming soon" ... probably more like "coming never". It's full of fuzzy assurances and pleasant clip art, but the fact that its CEO is adept at marketing does not make him honest. We in the States have plenty of these friendly-looking "fixers" too, saturating our media with warm promises and "debt solutions" we can ill afford.

The site copy comes right out and says that their great plan is for you to walk away from creditors and wait for them to go defaulted. You don't need Slick Willie to hold your hands and pocket your grocery money if that's your strategy. The consensus I've seen holds that these firms will only leave you poorer and in worse trouble.

So if you crash the plane solo, the first thing lenders do at default is reprice your account and consider you in breach of contract, making it harder to pay down whatever balance. Of course, if your cash flow is thin, the difference between a hundred and a thousand dollar balance begins to shrink. This is not a risk-free path, but people are forced that way all the time, and our brand name lenders all count on this happening after a consumer has been drained of options. It's part of their business model to see that we fail as debtors.

You're right that card lenders (and government agencies) tend to believe "It's not a problem until it's a problem" and won't cut new deals until you miss payments. Making yourself a bad risk becomes a twisted self-fulfilling prophecy. However, you as a bank customer can ostensibly vote with your dollars and transfer the balance someplace nicer. This outvotes anything a side bettor like a "debt fixer" can do, which plans to starve out the bank anyway! Ask for the terms which favor you, a lower APR or whatever. You find out for yourself who wants your business and who just wants your money, and act accordingly.

As to your immediate issue, my instinct would be to review this dubious agreement and see what S&L *thinks* can be done if you don't cooperate. Then compare that to your provincial laws to see how liable you are without ever signing a paper document.

In your place I would look very hard at the piling compounded interest and your real chances of ever breaking even. Look at how your lenders have treated you. Decide for yourself if you want to preserve or abandon the relationships. You're pretty much renting your own money at a given desperate point. Do your creditor landlords care enough? If not, default and collector disputes and bankruptcy get on the option table. This is not a moral issue but a business problem, one faced every day by your indebted neighbors.

For the record, this is not "my" site, just one I value and defend. In a way it belongs to all who contribute good intel.

You probably won't get it back sadly! However, you do need to file complaints!

http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx
http://www.fbi.gov/
https://esupport.fcc.gov/ccmsforms/form1088.action

And make sure you file one with your state attorney general's office!

You can't.  Your money is gone.  You can't get it back.  The scammer is in India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Jamaica, or some other country where where scamming dumb Americans is not considered a crime and the police do not cooperate with US law enforcemetn.

Just got off the phone with "Victor Adams" loan officer.   a gentleman by the name of Chris Martin called me from the restricted number to let me know that i applied for a personal loan and was approved.  He asked how much I needed, I explained it was for debt consolidation.   he gave me a loan approval number and a phone # 727-827-8760 to call.  Victor answered the phone and said yes I was approved but my credit score was a little below what they accepted so i would need to put down 499.00 and i needed to go to a Walmart and then call him so he could give me specific instructions on what to do with the downpayment.  I said" You want me to pay you 500.00 before I even see my money"?  He stated Mam, you must understand this is an unsecured loan.  He said if you are questioniing the company please visit the Better business beauru, i started to believe him, but then asked are their loan documents that i need to sign - he said only after you  pay the 499.00 down payment.  I told him i was still at work and would not be able to take care of this until after work, her said it would be fine and he would be watiting for my call when i got to the walmart.   I hung up with him and immediatley googled the company nmae and number and it has brought me to this page.  Whatever your desperation PLEASE dont do it.  I never followed through with any of this today, after reading all of these posts it confirmed my suspitions.  Thank you!
