I received a call from this number this morning. Probably a debt collector, they didn't leave a message.

Found this:
Just received a call from this number for my husband (who has a very common name). They just said this was Pat (a woman) with CRA and it was extremely important for him to call her back at 877-704-9457. I asked a question but she hung up on me and her demeanor during the call was rude. They called several months ago also and told me my husband needed to contact them to find out what was happening to him. Do some research, I did and it seems to be a scam to collect old debts. I do know that a debt collector cannot contact you any longer if you have an attorney so I intend to contact them and give them our attorney's information.

I have paid all of my active debts in full, so I have NO outstanding debt other than my school loans which I pay religiously every single month. These people are trying to collect on a 14 year old debt from a state I no longer live in which was charged off long ago. It was a utility company. I guess they are trying to prey on peoples fears, trying to get them to pay THEM money for a debt you no longer owe! Even if you are dumb enough to give these people money, do you think ANY of it is going to go to the original creditor? Probably not. Just a hint - if you have an old debt that you want to settle because it is weighing on your mind, contact the original debtor directly. Pay them directly and get a receipt. Once in a while, an original creditor will tell you that they no longer handle the claim for your account and will refer you to the agency that is handling the debt. But get this DIRECT from the creditor! When you have paid the debt to the collection companies satisfaction, contact them and make sure that they report your payment(s) to the 3 major credit reporting agency or you wind up giving your money away for nothing. Make sure that you get a copy of your credit report and check it often to make sure your payments are appearing on your report. If they are not, you may very well be dealing with an unscrupulous agency. Tell Vonage Holdings NOTHING! Don't even admit that it is you they are speaking to.

The call was from the local home branch (Boykins) of C R A Collections out of PA, or somewhere like that. Many Agents (cottage industry I think) all over the place - may be some 'How to make money without dealing in the real estate market' kind of income scheme
Turns out an IRS 1099c is a cancellation of debt which means I will be liable for the original $11 k debt as income in past years (or this year - not sure). But with my $0.00 income for the last 15 years, it will be income averages down to nothing. Not all that scary when you look at it. Just annoying paperwork if they file.

Identified himself as Mr. Strother
attempted shakedown on defunct MBNA account past statute of limitations(3 years Virginia) for collection
claiming $26K+ outstanding Something about filing a 1099c against account - very evasive when asked direct question, Black accent voice, possibly mid-late 30 in tone.
Assigned me the # 3344, pretty exciting stuff. is that my own # or is every one # 3344 ???
Told him to call back tomorrow if he wants me to talk to his supervisor.

Have received periodic calls recently from this #, and simply press "ignore" button if I notice, and so far they've not left a voice mail message if I wasn't there and caller had opportunity to leave a message. I have no debts, whatever, and the only possible reason these folks could have to call me would be about something minor, well-beyond statute of time limits for collection. I was divorced several years ago, and any items owing were few, minor and current, and I had a lawyer take care of all these details. It might be possible he let a minor item "fall between the cracks," but I doubt it, and so they are calling either due to an error or a scam on their part. Whatever -- these weasels buy old debt portfolios, for ¢'s on the $'s, and make many auto dial calls - with a rep hoping to connect live on occasion and either threaten or coax some money from some intimidated individual. If they collect something from just one of hundreds of dialings, make profits. Most people running these outfits and those working from them are the dregs of society. Just ignore - can report, but these folks are like cockroaches - about as useful and as hard to get rid of.

Just another desperate and tactless collector trying to collect on old debts. They specialize in 'scare tactics", but once you realize that there is really nothing they can do to harm you (regardless of what they claim)..then they are s.o.l.
Its best to simply ignore them. Do not acknowledge any old debt and/or agree to pay $1 (or even a penny) once you do, your "old debt" becomes a new debt (ie: the "clock" restarts once any payment activity is recorded)

I just got a call from them both on my cell phone and then fifteen minutes later on our landline. Our landline caller I.D. said the caller was "Vonage Holdings." I've just graduated college and have been getting a number of calls from numbers which turn out to be scams just like this one. I think my information may have been taken from applications I've filled out online for jobs. It's a shame that on top of finding a job which is frustrating enough you have bogus scammers calling you every other week. I am registered on the Do-not-call list and plan on reporting them if I receive another phone call.

I have received several calls from this outfit. I'm in Seattle. NEVER, NEVER ever agree to make a "token" payment on some old debt. Even for debts that are past the legal time periods for collecting debts can be "reactivated" if you agree to sending evening ONE penny. The debt collectors can claim that you acknowledge the debt, and now they can attempt to collect the ENTIRE original debt, even though it may have been long since written off by the original creditor. This is typically referred to as "zombie" debts.
.
Best to not talk to them at all.
