I just got a call from this Indian sounding man regarding my "windows error messages".  I told him I would call him back, he gave me this number and asked him how much it would cost.  He said one time fee of 199.  Obviously I won't be calling or paying but still thought I would share.

I also received a call from an "Indian sounding man with the above message.  It becomes kind of obvious if you listen to him that he's not a "corporate" person.  He stumbles at times and keeps insisting to pull up my computer (I said I wasn't at home).  He gave me the same # listed above when I told him I'd call HIM back.  As I kept questioning "how" he was getting these error messages, he simply kept insisting that I call him back.  Obviously, I won't.  Also really weird was that he called me on my cell,
which he obviously would not have nor did he ever use my name.

I received a call from this Indian sounding man claiming to be a windows tech support person. He was saying that they are receiving 100,000's of error codes from my computer and he asked me if I can give him access to my computer so he can fix the problem. When I told him I wasnt home, he game me this phone number to call back (760-284-3220).
How can they be stopped?

They called my work number with just my name and left a voicemail saying I was in lots of legal trouble. If I didn't call back the Nigerian ghetto talking black lady that she feels sorry for me because of what will happen. lol... That ghetto lady comes in my neighborhood she will find out what sorry really means. Who are these punk-a** immigrants coming to this country and spewing this crap on my phone. Sad that we let these imbeciles into our beautiful country.

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:

Jim, an East-Indian sounding fellow who was hard to understand, identifying himself as an employee of "Windows Technical Department" called me and told me that they were receiving, "online error messages" from my computer.  He said these errors were caused by "malicious files" that had been downloaded onto my computer from the internet and could cause my computer to crash at any time.  And my computer was "badly infected".  Jim wanted me to go to my computer and turn it on so he could "show me the messages."
Suspecting a hoax, I told "Jim" that I couldn't turn on my computer (it was actually powered up and accessing websites) and asked him to give me his phone number so I could call him back.  The number he gave me was 1-760-284-3220.
Jim told me that his company ("Windows Technical Department") was not a Microsoft company, but received error messages from Microsoft and contacted the people sending the error messages to Microsoft in order to "help" them.
When I told "Jim" that I was on the Do-Not-Call list he became somewhat nervous and seemed glad to end the call.
