Microsoft has free SCANS, Microsoft does NOT have SCAMS, so make up your scammer mind which one you mean by "SCANMS". Yes, people call Microsoft for help but only for technical help or free SCANS, and most certainly NOT to be SCAMMED. However, Microsoft does NOT call people FIRST, Microsoft NEVER calls people first, Microsoft only calls people *AFTER* people call Microsoft for help first. But you SCAMMERS call victims *FIRST* and tell a whole bunch of LIES, LIES, and more LIES. BTW, I've reserved an Extra Warm room for you in Hades, mind you pay the boatman. Enjoy.

THIS IS A SCAM. Read about the your-PC-is-infected-corrupted scam here http://news.softpedia.com/news/Cold-Call-Tech ... on-150170.shtml They lie about your PC sending out malware, error messages, etc., and say your PC is about to crash to frighten you into giving them remote control of your PC to fix the nonexistent problem (don't let them!). If they ask you to open the systems tab in eventvwr.msc to see all the errors, these harmless errors are *normal* for any Windows PC (mine has several and it runs just fine). Don't let them take control of your PC because they can download *real* malware, possibly a malware suite, that can spam, steal bank logins and personal info, etc. If they've remoted into your PC, the safest fix is to re-format your drive and re-install your OS assuming you have clean backups of your data. You can try scanning with various antivirus software but scanning may not find all the malware. If you don't know how, get help from friends or pay a local shop to do it. THIS IS A SCAM.

I got a call from this SOB today around noon. I could tell from the moment he started talking that this was going to be a scam, but I "played" along with him anyway. I asked his name, he said he was John. I kind of giggled and then asked him what company he was with. He told me Microtec, which was a department of Microsoft. I laughed after that and continued. He said he was from California, San Diego. I asked his address and all we would tell me was 88th St. I asked for his number on 88th St. He hesitated for about 10 seconds and told me sternly that it was 88th St. I told him again that in America we have numbers in front of our streets. He hung up on me.

This was so clearly a scam it's just insane. This guy deserves to be strung up because I'm certain he has taken advantage of so many ignorant and/or elderly people. He's making a living doing this and it should be stopped. The fact that posts on this number start in January of course tells us he hasn't been shut down. That is a crime in and of itself. I will report this guy to my local police department and to the FBI and I suggest everyone else do the same.

Big Scam, 760-429-2887...CLSID is not unique...they are lying:
- CLSID is not unique ZFSendToTarget=CLSID\{888DCA60-FC0A-11CF-8F0F-00C04FD7D062}
- They are not a department from MICROSOFT, just some guy at a pretended MICROTEC
- They didn't get both the CLSID and your phone number from your license registration
- They have no idea your computer was hacked...but it will be if you don't stop this guys.

I am reporting the guy to the FBI, because:
- I'm on the do not call (first report, the do not call one)
- because older people or nice one will be trapped and being hacked (told to install from a link) (second report, fraud, scam and hacking attempt).

Please do the same:

I also received a call from this Indian man who said that my computer was highly infected.  He said his name was Mike Johnson.  I read the posts while I was on the phone with him and told him I would call him back if I needed help.  Not going to do that for sure!

Same thing happened.  Indian Technicians from Microtech on behalf of Microsoft called and said that information from my IP address informed them I have some bad files on my computer and they wanted to help me delete them.  I was busy so, they called me back.  The next tech told me to type eventvwr and check applications for error messages.  (I had one error with Bonjour which has to do with iTunes.)  These people are in a very, very loud call center and are hard to understand.  They couldn't hear my responses so, I had to keep repeating myself very loudly.  After that the tech. wanted me to load EventViewer on my computer and I told him there is no way I would give him access to my computer so, he transferred me to his supervisor.  I told the supervisor that Microsoft has never called me before and I'm sure didn't care who I am because I don't have a contract with them.  If he wanted me to delete some corrupt files or whatever off my computer, I would do it myself.  At that point, he hung up on me.  I am certain this is a scam and they were trying to find someone who doesn't know anything about computers and is scared by what they are saying.    I do maintenance on my computer regularly to correct the problems that pile up in all Windows based computers.  He asked me how many errors I had I think expecting a bunch.  BEWARE of these scammers.

This just happened to me.  Said I had a virus and my computer was sending messages that they needed to investigate.  I told him I was not comfortable doing something like this over the phone.  He said don't you believe me?  He told me to push control, microsoft flag and r.  I did not do any of this.  Very pushy.  Was glad to have a place to come and look and see...it felt like a scam...

Just happened to me. Same heavy Indian accents. I wasn't buying it. Asked to speak with the supervisor (Jack). I was civil but assertive and told them why I was suspicious about the call. They ended up hanging up on me. WTG!

I just received the same call (8 May 2012)-- Indian says my computer is "highly infected with a virus" -- I didn't believe him and hung up. When I tried to retrieve the number, I got the message:  "Your last incoming call number cannot be reached" so I do not know if the number in the previous posts on this blog was the same source. The call I received, however, had the same characteristics as the calls described.  No legitimate business would operate this way.

My 89-year-old mother-in-law got a call today. Same pitch: your computer (registration # ____) is sending out viruses. The guy's accent sounded German. He didn't know what to say when she told him she didn't have a computer.

Thanks to 800notes and all you previous posters for outing these scam artists!
