I can't believe I have to be interrupted at dinner by a recording asking me to press "1" to hear details of how I can reduce my debt. First, I don't have over $4,000 in debt. Second, I have been on the Do Not Call list for over two years.

I do not want unwanted calls coming to my cell phone , this one of them .

I have received these calls for years and report them all to the Do Not Call Registry. This was the first time from this particular number. I suspect they use an automatic dialer which dials all combinations of numbers in a given area code. When someone answers or they reach an answering machine they know they have a working number and can sell a list with that number. I have seen no evidence that any agency at the federal or state level is taking any action to identify and fine these criminals.

I decided to play the game just to see what the rep would say. She (in a very nasal voice - I could just see her long fake fingernails and poofy hair and bright orange lipstick as she smacked her bubblegum and flicked her cigarette) gave me the spiel about owing more than $3,000 until I interrupted and told her she was breaking the law by calling my number. She responded the do-not-call list doesn't apply when my number is referred by my credit card company, then she launched right back into her spiel. I interrupted again and told her she was breaking the law. She responded this will be my last chance to get a lower rate for another 16 months (ooh, I'm scared). I interrupted again and told he she was breaking the law. She responded she would tell my creditor that I turned down the offer and she hung up. I have one credit card (AmEx) which I pay off every month (no interest charges), one (AmEx) which I never use, and two debit cards linked to my checking accounts. I didn't even have the chance to ask her who my 'creditor' was that referred me to this excellent service.
Wonder what will happen if I call the number?

Don't answer the phone!! If you have Caller ID, it's easy enough to check it. Another tactic I've used which has been very effective is to turn off my answering machine so the phone just rings and rings. I do this while I'm at work and they rarely call back after a couple of days of no answer, no machine. A ringing phone when I'm at home doesn't bother me either - I check CID and if it's someone I know I answer; otherwise it can ring til the cows come home!

I received a call from this number today at about 3:30 pm EST. I didn't recognize it so I ignored it. They didn't leave a message. I called the number back and received a message that the number was unavailable - either disconnected or blocks incoming calls. DO NOT ANSWER CALLS FROM THIS NUMBER. It definitely is some sort of scam.

I registered my cell number & home number but keep getting calls from out of state numbers. Today received a call from someone claiming they could offer me a lower interest rate, then they asked what kind of card I have visa, etc. When I told them they called me, they should have my info on file, person tells me he will call back, when you try to call number all you get is a constant busy signal.

Well, *sigh* I managed to go a whole ~20 days without a call from these a**hats. Thankfully, my phone never rang. It somehow just beeped, alerting me it had gone straight to voice mail. I'm going to assume they didn't leave a message. They never do. I'm thinking it's the same people who had been calling every other hour from 406-351-4361. From what I understand many of these fraudulent telemarketing firms are popping up hoping to phone phish information from unsuspecting people. They'd been harassing people for well over a year by the time they'd gotten around to me. I indicated this every time I wrote the DNCL, sharing my disappointment that they were slow to terminate the numbers services. The local government agencies where the callers reside won't help much either. They'll be eager to indicate they have no legal ability to do much, but they might give up a company telecom name that can be researched. The FTC & FCC will also take a while to do much of anything until enough reports/complaints are filed. I would go as far as emailing them (not just reporting to the DNCL), but lengthy emails elucidating displeasure over being harassed.
I've not signed up for anything in a while, & when I do I don't use my cell phone, I use my land line (because I never answer it). As much as I'd like to suspect my cell provider of "selling" my number to these pathetic swindlers, it seems instead they use a number generator to cycle through thousands of numbers. They just randomly luck into catching an active number & document it in their system. Then the calls will escalate to that active line in hopes some target will answer and foolishly divulge personal information.
Use common sense. I've had legitimate companies that I've done business with call & ask for information in order to confirm my id without provocation from me. Some call center employees are just a little dim. This is speaking from someone who has worked customer service before. Some fools don't understand the art of telephone business correspondence. You never ask the person for personal info if you are calling. Most companies forbid it. Yet they still do. Even if they call you, don't give it to them. In the case of obvious fraud calls, we don't know what the customer service agents are being told - for all we know they assume they are doing legit work, with extremely poor customer service habits. But I don't know too many competent workers who will blindly follow a strange set of rules like not telling the customer who they are (company). If you expect people to give you information you have to tell us who you are dummy.
I suspect the last number they had was finally shut down or inhibited somehow. I'm guessing I'll start getting multiple calls from these morons as I did before. My suggestion - don't bother answering the phone, even the first time. I don't think it's anything you've signed up for. Again, I'm guessing it's a random sampling & they luck into an active number. If you are unfortunately caught off guard and answer to a live person always demand who you are speaking with. If you get a recording, do not, I REPEAT DO NOT HIT whatever option they have to remove you from their list. It just further punctuates to them that an active person is answering the line (or voice mail) and reacting to the call. I.e. a live person they can call again has the number. And the number of calls will then INCREASE dramatically.
"Hello, we're calling to offer you a blah blah...on your interest rate." Or they offer magazines or security systems.
"Great, who are you so I know who I am doing business with? And can I have your name and agent number please?"
"Oh, we represent your credit card company."
"Which one?" At this point I'm not sure where they'd be able to take the conversation. If they fail to give you anything, just hang up. If they call back, hang up or don't answer. Eventually, they'll get the hint. Regardless, continue to report it to the various available agencies.
Do not foolishly give them your name if they ask. Do not confirm any personal information. If they can't provide the aforementioned information, they are likely scammers. Create a caller id, I have. I call them Harassing A**holes with their own special ring tone :). It's called silent.
I'd love to use whistles and air horns but inevitably it won't make much of a difference. I would, however, report it to the Do Not Call List each & every time they call. I'm not saying it'll fix the problem, but it is a functional step. If you happen to snag the mere whisper of a company id, report it to the FTC & the FCC, as well as the DNCL. I've gone as far as to also contact the government agencies of the local town the calls generate from. Often times they'll assist in giving you the information as to who owns the phone number (usually a telecom group) & foist off any ability to do anything legally to stop the calls. Once you get that, report that company instead to the FTC, FCC, & DNCL. Explain in detail you are getting criminal calls, from people refusing to indicate who they are, to your personal number.

This is a new one for me. 770-687-8800 I mean, not these calls. 406-351-4361 is the number they usually call on. They started in January and happen weekly. Guess the Do-Not-Call list is broken.
| Bedziggy 2011-07-22 15:46:45 Unknown |
I receive a call from this number 770-687-8800 every morning on my cellphone. The recording says something about lowering my credit card interest rate.and if I am interested to press 1 if not press 2. I did this one day and am still receiving daily calls from them. I have been on the DNC list every since it went into effect.

Thanks for the heads up on all these calls, I have been getting dozens a day to my cell phone. I just added them to my contacts with a letter only, they change the ring tone to silent, they can call all they want, but no one answers

Constant nonsense calls
| Maureen 2011-07-21 16:27:32 Unknown |
I've been getting these calls for months, always from a different number. I always press 1 to try to talk to a real person, and usually end up getting hung up on when I either ask who they are or tell them I have no credit card. Today I said "I don't have any credit cards, but I want you to know that every time I get this call I report your company to donotcall.gov (which I do)." The woman was genuinely surprised that I was getting called when I didn't have credit cards, suggested maybe someone else was using my number, and offered to take me off their calling list (adding that it would take 14 days for the removal to take effect). She also apologized when I told her that I usually get hung up on when asking to be taken off their list. I don't know whether I just got lucky with the person who answered the call or telling them I report them scares them into cooperating, but hopefully the calls have stopped.

I pressed 9 to unsubscribe b/c they called my cell phone and when someone came on the line I asked if they could remove my number from their calling list. She said "I wish I could removed that wart from your nose you witch"! and hung up on me. I was shocked!

I have been working with the telephone company (Time Warner) and it has been shot to the top people in security and the people who make up the programs in a effort to keep them from getting through blocks. I just got a call from 770-687-8800 but did not answer it. They are the newest number on my block list If you have call forwarding, I would suggest that you forward all of these numbers to the FCC. I can not do it because Time Warner has a program that does a precall when the number is entered to be forwarded. A air horn or whistle does wonders for the ears.

I personally have been thru all that mess, does't do you any good. So I started to treat them the same way back--no mercy!!!! Started dailing the number 9 and waited excitedly for the stupid idiot that took the job and then it happens. Blow your whistle into the sob or b-tch's ear as loud as you can. My kids (Mom,tooo) get very excited when they hear it. Did you get them good mom! Have had 17 years as at-home mom and these idiots!! They don't call as much, but I'm ready--bring it on!!!!
