They are still around! My caller ID said CPL Dunlap, which at first made me want to answer it, thinking it might be an Officer telling me one of son's had been in an accident, but after a moment of pause, the caller hung up before my answering machine could start. I knew I should look it up before worrying too much, so glad there are sites like this to warn us! Thanks to all who post! I think I will start answering the phone and then asking them to hold on for a second and just set the phone down and walk away... maybe if we waste enough of their time, they will quit calling!

This scam happened to me about a year ago.
This is a scam. There is even a website with a different number to call and I called to verify The dectective that called me and they said yes this person existed. Even caught the plain clothed man who picked up the check but still didn't catch on. DO NOT GIVE UNLESS YOU ARE DROPPING YOUR GIFT OFF DIRECTLY TO A PRECINCT!
Shame on these people!!

Caller ID said Forsyth Co. Guy said he was with the sheriff's office looking for donations for their Christmas charity. Wanted to come out to our house to get our donation?! Said they did not take credit cards over the phone. Gave up immediately when I told him no.

I am a police officer that works nights. I sleep during the day. These scum bag scammers called my cell phone twice within 2 minutes totally messing up my day. I don't normally get calls on this phone unless it is an emergency and calling twice in a row seemed to intensify the "urgency" of their crap. I am on the Do Not Call List. Scammers hiding behind hard working law enforcement agencies should be hanged.

North Metro FOP #13: caller was soliciting donations for uniformed Douglas County Serriff deputies that take kids on a shopping spree @ 200.00 each. I agreed to donate and called Douglas County. Det. Sullivan said they never heard of them and they have a program that helps needy children around Christmas, but it is not associated with this group. It appears they claim to be associated with lots of local counties. They are not getting my money.

Person showed up in my driveway and stated was from Heny County Police (ga) for a check to pick up that supposedly we had agreed to a donation. I stated that no one had called and no one in our house had agreed to any such donation. The guy left. Later that eve, someone called from 770-904-6394 stating that there must have been some problem or misunderstanding and they wanted to pick up the check. I sais I'd never talked to anyone and DO NOT call again. After yelling at the guy, he finally hung up.

This is a scam! Notice how people are reporting different counties like "Gwinnett County", "Cobb County", "Henry County", "Forsyth County" showing up on the caller ID and it is official sounding as if a government agency is calling. Well it's not -- it's a bunch of scumbags trying to trick you into giving them money. If you want to donate to a worthy cause try the United Way, Salvation Army, or Goodwill, eg.

I did call the police, that's what I meant by calling cobb county. They hadn't heard of North Metro FOP #13. After posting this however, I did some research and found a web site for them by looking for FOP's. While I know anyone can create a web site, this looked like one that has been around awhile and I felt good about it.
I would have deleted this post but couldn't see how to.

Seriously you might want to call your local police.

I spoke with this caller. He asked for a donation for the charity that pairs police officers with children of little means to shop for school clothes.
I agreed to give and hung up but changed mind when they asked me to leave a check on the front door Thursday and his car would pick it up. Asked if someone would be home which I wish now I had said yes!I guess I'll have to be here!
I called Cobb County to verify and they'd not heard of them...
