He is still at it, but now under this number: 6184348227
Received a call from Michael Scott about my missing camera on craigslist. Very rude. Told me he was a truck driver and made it impossible for me to confirm that he had my camera. He will tell you he got your item from some kids for cheap. Also, he wanted me to send him money through Walmart. I was so excited at first that I gave him my address, lucky for me that was it. After he hung up on me, I realized he was probably a scammer hitting the Lost and Found on craigslist. After a quick online search, I'm finding that this is becoming common. I feel horrible for the people that have been scammed by this guy. I see posts going back as far as 2009, which means this guy has been scamming people for 5 years and counting. Is there anything else that can be done about this scam?

I cannot believe this guy is still in business! Not sure which phone number was used but in 2010 this "Michael Johnson" person claimed to have bought my lost engagement and wedding rings from some kids.
Very similar claims:
1. He said he was a truck driver
2. was approached by some kids and bought the rings for $150.00.
3. he wanted to give them to his wife but she believed in Karma and told him he needed to do the right thing.
4. He lived in Illinois
5. Wanted me to Western Union him the $150.00 he paid for the rings plus $50.00 to insure and ship me the rings. (The password he wanted me to use on the WU transaction was "silver."
BEWARE!!

I had the same scenario happen to me with a different phone # 417-771-1220, could be the same guy or just same scam. He claimed to be a truck driver supposedly bought the ring I lost from a kid. He called on my lost and found Craigslist Ad. He couldn't meet up though because he was in IL and no longer CO. and wouldn't be back. He also couldn't send a picture of my ring. He wanted me to send all the money we agreed to Western Union Rockford Illinois "Richard Webb" password "brothers name steve". He got really defensive when I told him I wasn't comfortable doing that, said I was accusing him of being a scammer. Well if the shoe fits. Beware

Got a call today from a "Steven Collins" with a similar MO. Claimed he was in the midwest, said he was going to IL, was a truck driver, his number though was from Topeka, KS. Number was 785-969-9162.
He asked me about the watch, what happened, then claimed that he'd ship it back to me. He hung up, supposedly called UPS then called back with a shipping quote. Said it'd be $29 to ship it back (flag number one as I ship stuff all the time and that's inflated - but I went with it). Then I said no problem, I'll send it to you. He became very interested in how I was going to send it. I suggested paypal or I'll send him some money in the mail. He said no. Asked what store was nearby and instructed me to go to Western Union (flag 2).
I said okay, I don't like that, but I'll send you the $30 for shipping and when I get the watch, I'll gladly pay you the $125 you paid for the watch. I should mention he really made me go through why it was important to me before asking for this money.
He became very defensive, claimed I was a racist (I can't even see this guy?), went on and on about how he went through all this trouble to find me (flag 3) and that he'd just call me when he was in town sometime and we could meet up.
That last bit I think was just meant to make me question myself and whatever.
I'm leaving this here so that his number will come up in searches and hopefully make him at least have to spend money on another phone. However, if you get this call with details changed, it's a scam. For sure.

"Michael Lawson" called me from 785-383-7958 on 8/31/13. I lost my black Canon ELPH camera at LAX early last week and listed it in the lost and found section of Craigslist. "Michael" claimed to have bought my camera from someone at LAX. When I suggested we meet, he told me he was in the Midwest. When I asked him to verify that he had my camera by emailing me one of the pictures, he claimed that he didn't have an email address. So he uses Craigslist, but doesn't have an email account? That was a red flag. I told him he could keep the camera, just spend 44 cents and mail me the memory cards. At that point, he mumbled something about calling me later and hung up. I always would have wondered if he really had my camera, but thanks to this site (and especially "scammed in wisconsin") I can be fairly certain he does not.

Wish I'd checked this site sooner! Scammed by a "Richard Evans" today, 785-383-7958. A so-called truck driver from Carbondale, Illinois...our daughter had lost her phone and we listed it on Craig's list with my husband's number as the contact. So this guy calls us, not mentioning C-List, saying he bought the phone from some kids, then figured it was stolen and found my husband's phone number in the contact list and wanted to do the right thing so he called, wanting to get reimbursed for what he paid ($75)+ $21 for UPS shipping. Gave specific Moneygram directions...we should have known but we let emotion take over...we really wanted the phone back as it had all of our daughter's personal information on it. Live and learn! This scumbag will eventually get what is coming to him.

Wish I would've found this earlier. Pretty sure this is the same guy who just scammed me. Said he bought my lost item I posted on Craigslist from some kids. Said he was a truck driver from Missouri and he and his wife wanted to do the right thing. He was in Illinois now. He used the name Larry Morton and phone number 417 619 4900. Said he couldn't send a picture of the item because he didn't have a camera phone. Stupid me I didn't think and gave him my address so he could send it UPS and sent him some money to pay for shipping and reimburse "what he paid for it" via money gram. I could kick myself now because I didn't take time to think and now after the fact it is so obvious it was all a scam. Hope my mistake can help someone else to avoid this in the future.

HE Bought my backpack with items in it from a kid & wanted to do the right thing....blah blah blah, he is in Ilinois now, & will ship UPS..... His name was James Durham....new number is (573) 462-6515 (MO number).... Hope my stupidity helps someone else to NOT get scammed.

Hey guys. Glad I looked this up before sending some guy any money for my laptop that he, for some reason, had in Illinois, and his phone number was from Kansas. Anywho, he has a new number, it's 913-202-9710. Thats 9132029710 for anyone googling this number. It's a really dirty person who tries to take advantage of someone who already lost something valuable to them. He's messed up. Pray for him. Jesus really can save anyone. Glad I put my faith in God and not people. Hope ya'll have a good day and that you actually get your stuff back.
and "James", if you're reading this, you really should try to straighten out. You will get caught eventually. I hope your "business" is failing, But I hope you find a better life in something else besides making people feel sad and scamming. Be praying for you, man. Cause Lord knows we both need it.
Caleb.

He calls claiming that he is a truck driver or janitor and has found lost items, and asks to moneygram him the shipping fees or cost of the item that he had to pay.
radioedit6 2011-06-06 20:56:49 Unknown
Continuously calls and leaves no message.

This scumbag is still up to the same games and tried to take advantage of my daughter. He supposedly found her lost item on Craigslist and was a truck driver and he and his wife "wanted to do the right thing". He calls from 224-723-6331. He has used numerous other phone numbers in the past. NEVER give up money until you can verify that he actually has your item and hands it over to an OfficeDepot employee to ship out. Call the OfficeDepot location and speak to the manager to have them verify that he is actually there. If you make him go through these steps, any "good" person doing the right thing would understand and take the appropriate steps.
The initial calls started out nice and each subsequent call got shorter and he got more upset the more hoops we asked him to jump through. We never sent the money and waited for him to call back. He was mad that we "made him to go OfficeDepot for nothing", when actually he was mad that we made him go to Walmart for nothing!! There was no money at Walmart in the form of a moneygram waiting for him from us! Thank God for "motherly instincts" and Google! If you have been victim, please post it online to help prevent others from being victim. Past posts helped us from being a victim. THANK YOU!

He called me from a different number. About a lost ring. Stupid me fell for it, cause I wanted my ring back so back, I probably would have cut my arm of and mailed it. I won't give up on this and it's not about the money. It's about his scamming. Get a real job and leave hard working innocent people alone. I believe in Karma, hope he does. He is using Michael Griffin and he was a truck driver delivering a load and bought my ring for $150.00. He was back in Chicago and he would UPS my ring. He paid my heart strings on this. Involving a so called wife. I had a long conversation with this guy about people have no morals these days and no honest people left in this world. He knew the right things to say, I give him credit for that.

I got a call from this number too about my stolen laptop on craigslist. He said his name was Hank Rogers and that he was a truck driver and bought my computer from some kids in Portland OR. He asked me for the police report number and he even called them! I live in Vancouver WA so I belived him especially after I got a call from the police that he did call and so I stupidly sent this A**HOLE some of the reward $$ (only enough to send it to me) He wanted the whole reward but I told him not until I had my property back. Very clever scam!!!
timistheword 2009-07-07 18:54:10 Unknown
Just got off the phone with "Earl Bruce" (when he called back the second time with the moneygram details, he slipped up and called himself "Ed Bruce"). I asked him to send a photo of our stolen laptops (claimed he'd bought them from some kids in Portland, OR, and he claimed he was a truck driver. He said sending a photograph would leave a trail for the police. When I told him his number's connected with numerous craigslist lost and found scams, he stammered and hung up. A***ole.

Glad to help. I was very upset my s*** wasn't found. He told me he was from Missouri also, but has a chicago phone number and apparently is named either Michael or James. PUNK!
Sailor boy 2009-07-04 20:11:56 Unknown
Thanks for posting your message. I also got a call about my missing watch. I didn't give him any info other than my name, probably shouldn't have done even that. I'm very bummed that my watch wasn't really found.
Sailor boy 2009-07-04 20:09:10 Unknown
Got a call from a craiglist about a watch. I'm glad I looked up the number, but sad my watch wasn't found. He said he lived in Missouri and name was Michael.
Redpony 2009-07-03 17:22:37 Unknown
Dude tried to scam me from my craiglist ad about a lost camera. Gave him my name and address (STUPID), but no money information. Said his name was James Grant.
