Let me answer myself about my previous statement on why ATT has not taken much action....since the scammers must pay someone else for these phone calls the phone companies make money from the calls.
The do not call list is a good idea but the scammers are forging their phone numbers and caller id's which the do not call list needs in order to block. It does block 'legitimate' phone marketers.
Ron 2013-08-15 00:46:51 Unknown
The FTC has been taking some week action by providing a prize for someone to come up with a way to block those calls. Someone won though the technique is a bit weak. Why has ATT not done this and why in the past has the FTC not required the phone companies to implement identification and blocking techniques. I'm sure the NSA might have an answer.

8:51 PM ( illegal to call after 9 pm ? ) - March 11 ( 2013 ).
don 2013-05-07 15:56:11 Telemarketer
These type of calls are scams. Do you really think they care about the DO NOT CALL List? What they are offering is illegal, so why be concerned with any other laws?

I see where most of you say to just not answer your phone. Well you know I pay for my phone and I don't intend on letting these"scammers" rule my life. If you have an answering machine it shows you have a working number, so not answering the phone yourself is NOT the answer. The bottom line is that these people are harassing us and that if I'm not mistaken is against the law. If everyone would take a stand against these types of calls and demand that they are prosecuted through their state attorneys offices, then maybe, just maybe someone will decide to put a stop to having phone numbers sold, which is where some, not all are getting their numbers. I personally have a silent number, which I pay for,and I'm on the no call list nationally and in my state, those lists are worthless for the fact that they do NOT include all of the companies that should be on there. Take a stand and bring these companies down instead of giving in to them by allowing them to keep calling.

Legitimate businesses who Telemarket are required by the FTC to purchase the list at regular intervals and to maintain an accurate list of those who are on it. Legitimate businesses who Telemarket to those on the list are fined. They are easily found by the FTC because in doing business on permanent basis, there are anchoring requirements such as actual Local Telephone number, physical and mailing addresses, and the need for mutual contact with the public and consumers. This is why Most legitimate businesses who telemarket, rarely violate the list. This is why you are NOT getting calls from the millions of American businesses who could be calling you, but are not because they are honoring the DNC Registry list. Anyone who signs up on the list does have access to the DNC site where it is explained who is and who is not excempt and various conditions in which a legitimate company can call you. Although I am not crazy about our current president either, he was not in office when the DNC Registry was established. I agree that his admininstration should improve it and sew up the holes.
Yet, when you read all of the complaints on this entire board, you will see that most are about scammers, collectors and such. Collectors can call you and scammers will call you regardless of any list.
Tridelta 2013-03-15 13:08:28 Unknown
I agree that the "Do Not Call" list is too often ignored. But, to answer your question: A LEGITIMATE company that does a lot of telemarketing will keep an in-house "Do Not Call" list that is checked and updated before any calls are made. The master lists are available to businesses from the federal & state governments. You can also do a search for the DNC list for your state. Finally, you can take the trouble to report these calls to the FCC or your local state AG. Unfortunately, the scammers are very slippery, and often they are located in another country, but reporting it might do some good. Like spam, this is the price we pay for the convenience of modern communications.

They want to clean my furnace! I can't ignore the calls because my answering machine picks up the call so they know it's working number!

This is the fourth time in 2 days I have gotten a phone call from this number. It is about a life alert for senior citizens. I wish the NO CALL list really worked because I keep getting calls I shouldn't be getting.

I get calls from this number all the time as well. Quit answering the phone. I might have to change my
number....what a pain.
Why have a do not all list? 2013-03-14 03:55:02 Telemarketer
This number (773-683-1860) identifies as wireless caller. They have called everyday for two weeks. Today I decided to answer, got a recording so I pressed 1. A man came on and I asked who is this? We are on the do not cal list. Are you aware you are breaking federal law??
He had the nerve to laugh and said " such language miss, such language. I said I had yet to tell him how I really feel but I was sure he had heard it before. Again he laughed and said they can't catch us.

See brownbear123's post above. Brownbear's post is correct in every way. Get Caller I.D. If you don't know the caller or the number, don't answer and never, ever call these people back. Scammers are world wide and could cost you a bunch of money just by you answering the phone.
Richard 2013-03-14 01:31:05 Unknown
Best just don't answer which is what I did since I didn't recognize the number. I'm on the famous 'Do Not Call' list which is a joke! No message was left. Caller ID displayed 'Chicago IL'.
Fedup 2013-03-13 23:58:36 Unknown
imagine that, another government agency getting paid for doing nothing!! I'ts more likely that the FCC would come after you on behalf of one of these solicitors for damaging their eardrums x blowing a whistle in the phone!!

I receive 2 to 3 calls a day 2 to 3 times a week and I get a recording about elderly people falling. I can never speak to a human being. I want these to stop.

This phone number belongs to the carrier Bandwidth.com . It is a VoIP number so the DNC list is bypassed. I've also received multiple calls the same as previously reported. Go to their web site..where yo can file a complaint or call the carrier toll free number in Illinois and report the number.
Bandwidth is NOT the caller, merely the Phone company from which the phone number exchanges through.
