This call received Nov 13, 2008 was a survey for Alberta Health Services and University of Alberta funded by the Heart and Stroke Foundation.  It was attempting to determine the state of health of citizens in the Capital Health region, and took about 20 minutes to answer the survey.  I was comfortable that this was a legitimate survey, and they did not ask me to reveal anything to identify myself.

Thank you for contacting me with your inquiry and sending me the link to
the 800notes.com website. Since 2000, the Alberta Cancer Board (now
Alberta Health Services - Cancer Care) has contracted the Population
Research Laboratory (PRL) to recruit Albertans, aged 35-69, by telephone
for participation in the long-term research initiative called The
Tomorrow Project. The purpose of the project is to study relationships
between environmental and lifestyle risk factors, and cancer. The
2009-2010 study is part of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer
initiative, a cancer research legacy for the country over the next
several decades.

The data collection protocols, including the hours of calling and 10
call attempts, have been approved by the U of A's Arts, Science and Law
Research Ethics Board, and Alberta Health Services. Telephone and cell
numbers in Alberta are generated at random by computer. Names and
addresses are NOT linked to these computer records.

All outgoing calls from the interviewing workstations show 780-492-2505
University of Alberta as the Caller ID. Unfortunately, our research
interviewers can not leave messages under our contract with Alberta
Health Services. For some of our other Random-Digit Dialing surveys, the
PRL interviewers leave a brief message after 5 call attempts to explain
the nature of our call.

Interviewers record the outcome of each call. Please note that the
Population Research Laboratory and the University of Alberta are NOT
subject to the federal "Do Not Call" legislation. However, the PRL
maintains an internal "Do not call" list.  As study participation in
research studies is voluntary, I can assure you that the PRL will
respect an individual's wish to be removed from our "calling list".  The
Research Coordinator can add your phone number to this list for current
and future telephone studies. Please let me know your number if you
would like the PRL to proceed with this.

In case you are interested in information about The Tomorrow Project,
here is a link to the study website:
http://www.cancerboard.ab.ca/tomorrow/

The PRL maintains strict protocols around participant confidentiality
and access to information. All project staff, including telephone
interviewers, are required to sign a confidentiality agreement.
Interviewers receive full training from the research coordinator on data
collection protocols, including the provision of contact information for
verification of the legitimacy of the project. Study participants are
assured during the phone recruitment that information is protected under
Alberta's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPP)
and will be used only for the research purposes.

I'm sorry that you were unable to leave a full message at 780-492-2505
number. You have likely exceeded the 2-minute time limit set by the
University of Alberta Voice and Data Network Services.

If you have further questions, please contact me at your earliest
convenience. Have a good afternoon!

Best regards,
Donna

Received call from this number Nov 14/08 re: University of Alberta cancer study.  Sounded like an interesting project but declined (politely) to participate.  So not sure why they called back a week later with the same spiel about the survey - maybe they didn't take our number off the list?

I was quite surprised to see call ID and a message from the University of Alberta... but I should've figured it was something odd. They left a message about some travel deal for me and some friends,... "press 1 to find out more information" etc etc etc...
