Scammer says "Hi Grandma" then gives a sob story about how he's stuck somewhere and needs to have money wired. Has been at it for at least a month from this number; I don't know why they haven't caught him yet.

This happened to me today...but I am living in my 74 year old mothers Florida home and he called me "Grand ma" and I said I am no grandma so he went on to say that he is my oldest nephew (how did he know this??) So I called him by my nephews first name and he went on with his SCAM to say he is in Dublin, Ireland and he and his buddy had been hit by a drunk driver last night and needed $3000. to pay for the car rental before he could leave the country. I played along with him and asked him what name did he want me to send the Western Union "Money In Minutes" to and he repeated nephews first name and then said and you know the last name...so he couldn't fill in all the blanks. Stated that his cell phone had been broken in the car wreck and asked if I had a cell phone so he could call me back to make sure I wasn't having problems sending the $$...if it WAS my nephew he would have know that I did have a cell phone but I didn't give him that number. He has already called back twice...first time to let me know that his calling card was running out of minutes (a reverse phone number search says that this is a landline in South Florida/Miami-Dade County) and the second time he called I let the answering machine pick it up as if I were out sending the $$ and they left no message and hung up. I have also called the Sherrifs Dept. in the county that I live in and there is nothing they can do other than tell you to tell friends and family about it.

My grandfather was conned with precisely the same story as Linda has written.
Unfortunately for my grandfather, the scammer's story coincidentally lined up with similar facts (e.g. I call him "grandfather" and I was actually traveling through Europe at that time)! My grandfather initially sent $1,900 via Western Union to my name (maybe the guy used a fake ID to pick it up in Spain?). The scammer then took his mobile phone number, called back saying he needed another $1,900. Grandfather sent it. This happened a subsequent time when the scammer called back saying that he remained with a $2,000 bill to the rental car company. Grandfather sent the money again. This time, however, the scammer said to send the funds to "Bradley Waterman."
Does Western Union have any fraud protection? My grandfather lost over $6,000 (WU fees incl). I imagine that the money is gone. Be aware!

I got a phone call this morning, claiming it was my Grandson in Spain, said he was in a car accident and that the air bag went off and cut his lip and broke his nose, and that is why he was talking the way he did (which is why I told him he didn`t sound like my Grandson) and that they had rented a car and that they needed $1900 to pay the car rental place, said he could pay me back in a week. Now here his why I listened for a while because I do have a Grandson that had been in Spain, but this is what was suspicious that he called me Grandma Linda and my Grandson never has called me that, and when I told this person I didn`t have any money he hung up on me..

Called my wife with same story as others, we do have an older grandson in college. She said she didn't have any money and the caller hung up.

I reieved the same call . My wife took the call. He had some pertinent information about my grandson and that he was calling from Barcelona. I have heard of this scam before as it was pulled on my sister in law who lives in France. The only diferance was that it was her niece stuck in Spain and was in trouble with the Police and wanted money to get her out. But she had traced it back to a cafe in the city where she lives. Upon this phone call I checked the phone area code and found out it came from Miami. I immediatly e-mailed all of my family notifying them. I sure hope they catch this guy soon. He is preying on vulnerable people.

I hope this idiot gets arrested soon.
