I just received a message on my home voicemail to call Wachovia Fraud Protection at 1-800-204-3814.  I called and they asked for my name, account number and social security # which of course I refused to give.  They said they couldn't help me without the information and I told them when I checked on line their number was showing as a scam she stated it wasn't that I could call the number on the back of my card and they would transfer me to her.  Needless to say it is a SCAM!  I have reported the number to my bank and for information Wachovia does not exist anymore anyway. Do not give any information to anyone!

I'm on the phone with a Wachovia rep now. I was advised that there are a lot of fraud numbers for Wachovia and she would likely not be able to identify whether or not the call was legitimate. I conferenced the agent in on a return call to the number; she advised that the call sounded legitimate, but she couldn't be sure. She also advised that they had experienced a lot of phishing. She recommended that I allow her to transfer me to WellsFargo since my accounts had been moved to WF. Before she transferred me, she informed me that she was able to find the number listed under loss prevention in the Wachovia directory. When I spoke to WellsFargo, they didn't see the fraudulent attempts that the automated call referenced.  Weird call. All of my Wachovia cards are inactive. My only thought is that since the call came to my work number, the call was about my old Wachovia corporate card. At any rate, I was told by Wachovia that the number is legitimate. If you call Wachovia, ask them to search for a number for loss prevention... if you hear from the people at 1.800.Wachovia, maybe you will have peace of mind. I certainly do now.

It is a legitimate number.  I called Wachovia and the woman verified that 800 204 3814 is a number that Wachovia uses to call people to verify that no fraud has taken place.  It is a measure they take before placing a hold on the account.  The person who works at your local branch of the bank may not have been informed of this practice because it is done centrally.

This phone number is from WACHOVIA and it is legitimate.  I called (2 different number at Wachovia) & emailed Wachovia to verified.  It is a fraud protection center from Wachovia.  Someone in France was trying to use my card and I had a call from this number.  They declined the transaction and reissue me a new card.

If you are unsure you can call Wachovia at this number to verify and to make changes to your card.  They are very helpful.  800-359-8977.

I got a call saying that my account has suspicious activity. One problem, my account has been closed for about a year now. So all of you saying this is real and ignoring what Wachovia says about the number should call them back. Don't forget to give your mothers maiden name! In all seriousness I hope you all didn't give out any information. When in doubt call the real number that you know is to the business. Would you give out financial information to random people claiming work for you bank that you didn't know? Seems like a bad idea.

Good luck!

I have been receiving calls from this number for the last 3 days.  If this number is legit and from Wachovia Fraud Department then I don't understand why they are calling me since I have never ever done any business with them.  Seems odd to me.

I received a message on home phone this morning stating that it was Wachovia Bank calling about potentially fraudulent activity on my checkcard.  They stated an account/card number which did not match what I have.  I called Wachovia on the toll-free number on the back of my card and after being transferred found that it was Wachovia who had called.  They said they are seeing an increase in credit/debit/check card fraud with the takeover of Wachovia by Wells Fargo.

My advise is to not discount a call from 800-204-3814 automatically but to call the bank to verify first.

Same thing happened to me.  Received a call from 800 204 3814 and later checked the voicemail message that was left (did not answer call b/c I did not recognize the number).  Voicemail was a fake automated message from "my bank" saying there was an issue with my account ending in [insert real last 4 numbers of my acct here].  It asked me to call 800 204 3814 (thank you Danny M for posting...i googled the number and found a wealth of info in your post).  Thankfully, I already had my banks real phone number saved in my phone and immediately noticed that it did not match the number of the missed call.  I contacted my bank via their real number and not surprisingly found out that they did not phone me.  The phone rep said they never call customers, just FYI.  I then went online, inspected my acct and found several fraudulent charges.  Days later fraudulent international service charge fees continue to roll .  Card was canceled and I will get all my money back, but it's still incredibly annoying.

Got a message on our home phone about a frauid alert and to call 800-204-3814 which I did. The person said they were calling about a account ending in four numbers which didn't match any of our accounts and a rejected ATM transaction. He then asked for my account info, I said I was not comfortable providing that and he gave me the 800-359-8977 which is one of the Wachovia Fraud numbers. I verified it on the Wachovia website and called reported the incident and was advised that maybe they called the wrong person. Bottom line: not sure.

I just got a voicemail from this number, but instead of calling it back I called my local branch. There was a supsected unathorized use of my debit card (it was really just me trying to pay a bill and using the wrong billing zip code), so Wells Fargo put a hold on the card until I could to verify that the attempted charge was conducted by me.

The voice message stated it was from Wachovia to say they wanted to speak to me concerning questionable charges made against my checking account via my check/debit card. Suspected it could be phishing so I called the number on the back of my card. I wended my way to the fraud prevention unit - and it turns out there really were a couple of attempted charges made against my account by a gas station in Canada! Got it resolved so the charges would be denied and got a new card. BOTTOM LINE: It appears that this is actually a legitimate number (as confirmed by Wachovia), but I would still advise folks to call their bank directly rather than take a chance on a number with a caller-id that says "800# Service". It's safer and easier to investigate that way rather than risk disclosing info to an unknown.

Just got a call from this number today.  I called the regular Wachovia number on the back of my debit card and they confirmed it is really the Wachovia Fraud team.  So it's not a scam.

I called it and it was Wachovia Fraud Protection. They were verifying a recent purchase that looked suspicious to them, but, it was a correct purchase made online. The computer message when I called said it is not a marketing call, but, a call to verify recent activity on my account.

I just got a call from this number. It was an automated system with enough of my personal information to get my attention and feel it was either legit or a real good scam. I followed the propmts and spoke with a rep. who gave me more information regarding my account and only asked a few simple verification questions (such as billing zip and last 4 of social). I was sceptical but proceeded and was given a case number at the end. Once I was off the phone I contacted Wachovia via the number on the back of my card just to be safe. I was told the same thing regarding the suspicious charges on my card they even gave me the same case number I received in the first call.

Long story short

THIS NUMBER IS 100% LEGIT
