Constantly calling. I don't bother to answer and they don't bother to leave a message beyond a click. It'd be really nice if I would stop getting constant spam calls on my cell.

Someone who "loves credit law" should at least have learned the proper name of the one which governs debt collector conduct: Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. The commentor was likely getting it confused with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Now that you've had a little chat with the agency, your initial dunning letter should be sent your way before this week is out. Certain disclosures are mandated by federal law, which that letter typically copies straight from the FDCPA. Be sure to dispute your bogus debt on paper, sent USPS Certified, and demand validation while restricting how you are contacted to convenient times and places. If your story is true, the agency will be stumped and should never again try to collect on the account. If they're dumb enough to ignore your notice in any illegal manner, file suit for the violations.

When do you plan to sue for the FDCPA violations? You've caught debt collectors making empty threats of litigation ... twice! I estimate that you have until April 2014 to file suit for the first cause of action.

I've gotten multiple calls and finally when I answered it was from a debt collection agency for an amount of about $80 with a cellular phone company that I did business with 6 months ago, I cancelled my service.  I had paid the final amount 6 months ago as well.  I told her there would be no way I had a debt with that company and how strange that I had never received any notice of an outstanding balance in the mail or by phone.  She said to get back to her but didn't give me her name or number and hung up.

So, this is a legit debt collection company. They collect for people like the University of Phoenix (Which is a big issue in itself when it comes to your financial aid) ANYWAY. A month ago I got a call from a woman at this agency who said that I owed money to Phoenix (Which is true) and wanted me to make a settlement or an arrangement. I explained that obviously if I'd been getting fin. aid, I don't have money. I have an 18 month old, and my income is very low. She told me (and I quote) that she had been working with Phoenix for 5 or 6 years now, and that if they took my account back from her in 3 months (she'd already had it for 3) then they would consider legal action against me. That Phoenix was known for taking their former students to court over the high balances, and that I had a high enough one they would take me. When I hung up with her I called Phoenix IMMEDIATELY and found out A) They have NEVER sued their former students for balances, B) They had no idea she was lying like that and C) THIS IS ILLEGAL. This is a scare tactic that is ILLEGALLY used in hopes you will be frightened into considering paying them. Soon as Phoenix found out this happened they yanked my balance from them and handed it to another company. Which proves that Phoenix now knew of the illegal tactics being used, and didn't care.

Two days ago the same woman called for my husband (We were students together and we both have balances. Tells you alot about how bad the school was). She said the same thing! That she'd had his folder for 3 months and if they took it back in 3 months they may consider legal action. I flat out went "That is a lie I talked with Phoenix directly and they have never sued and never will take legal action" and she FREAKED. She tried to IMMEDIATELY back track on the call "I never said that! I say on this recorded call I never said the words legal action I just said action!" and I just said "You've been caught goodbye" and hung up.

I have filed disputes with Phoenix to get my husband and I"s balances wiped clear and off our credit reports. I let this slide once, but after two illegal actions by the same collection company and the school knew, this is just out of line.

Please note, this company will lie to scare you. If they claim whoever you owe money to will sue you, just call the original people and ask them. If they say "Yes we have gone to court before over balances" then it's the truth. But 95% of the time people say these things hoping you'll get so scared you'll start paying on it, and they don't care it's illegal to threaten if it's not true.

BE SMART. You owe money, that is true. WHO DOESN'T OWE MONEY THESE DAYS? Do not let these horrible collection agencies break you though. Stand your ground, and if you keep in contact with those you owe to especially in this kind of situation you will have the upper hand!

My son received a call from this number and was asked if he knew how to locate me. They said I was the executor of my recently passed mother's estate, and they had to get ahold of me to work out the details. My son wondered how they got his phone number which is new as he relocated to a new state and got a local number. I'm wondering how they knew my mother had died. Are these folks preying on survivors by reading the obits? The number was 1-800-211-1435 X 170. Christine Beuford was the name used, and the spelling of that name came from my son so I'm not certain if it's correctly spelled.
Anytime we call an "800" number our phone number is captured so I am not calling back from my home. I may go find a place with a business phone and call this back. I don't want those dinner interruptions night after night though, so I will not be using my phone for this one.
I'll add follow up if I uncover anything new.

These crooks call all hours looking for someone who does not live here, they use 800  and 916 area codes numbers.  It looks like they are a company called States Recovery, I don't know who they are and owe no body  anything.  I think they are out to harrass Senior Citizens, they should be in jail for harrasment.

I received a call from 1-800-211-1435 ext. 127 LISA saying I had a collection for 118.00 from AT&T cell phone. Have not had a account with At&T since 2004. I have never received any bills regarding this from AT&T nor any collection agency. Did not leave the carrier owning them anything. They threatened to report it on my credit report. I checked report and it is fine. I think they are phising for information and most of all payment of a settled debt. She had my SS# and was wanting a current address. Watch out!
