Actually Owen, I think no-one should pay any credit card debt that has been sold to a third party debt collector like you as those debts have already been paid by the Fed bailout.

This number called my employee asking for me...and said I had called them about a month ago. One I don't know who this is and no I didn't call them or any number like this period. This person or number seems to be getting away with harassing whoever they want whenever they want.

They did not say what they wanted only a name Ty Shaun( or Shawn)...don't know or never talked to a person by that name. When I tried calling the number back it was like a computer...no one was there.

Remember you can email their management staff by simply inputting their first name.last name@ncogroup.com.  This is where a lot of their VPs are and its sad how illegal this site is.  Its the Getzville, NY office.  Contact the attorney General in NY Andrew Quomo and tell him of any and all problems and the people you have talked to along with what time they called.  Take notes-they do!!

I have received calls from these guys over the past month.  They always call at 5:50 a.m. even on the weekends.  They have the wrong number which I did inform them.  They also harassed my 11-year old son.  They asked him questions about the person they were collecting for and if he knew the guy, if he was sure, where he lived, etc.  I was livid and called to complain but never really talked to anyone beyond the call center.

Thanks so much for all this GREAT info on NCO.

They have been calling me, but leave no message.

Today I reveived a letter from AmEX that they had turned my acct over to NCO for collection.

This is incorrect, I setteled my acct with AmEx some time ago.

I called AmEX today and talked with the person who worked with me regarding my settlement. She apologized and said AmEx made a mistake and she will take care of this.

I know I will be the one who will have to deal with this all because AmEx did make a mistake.

This is the second CA I have had to deal with regarding this acct. The other one did not believe me, it took weeks for AmEx to clear this up and me calling and writing letters to the other CA.

Sometimes the people getting these calls DO NOT OWE THE MONEY!!!

I went to www.fairdebtlawyers.com and submitted an online complaint about NCO. Guess what?! They filed suit on my behalf for free and collected statutory damages for me from NCO for violations of the FDCPA. The above site is for a legitimate lawfirm in Philadelphia PA and they are amazing. They go after NCO every day and win. Just thought I'd pass on the info. The name of the lawfirm is Warren & Vullings and their phone number is 215-745-9800. Call them. You won't regret it. There are alot of things these collection agencies do that are against the law and most people don't even realize they are being violated.

I am not a debt collector nor do I owe any (financial) debts. I actually don't get calls from this number but the conversation looked interesting.

You know, re-reading what I just wrote, I've come to an amazing conclusion: I don't get calls from these numbers because I've never accrued unpaid debt. WOW! Fascinating.

It's not that I don't understand getting in a bad situation, but mostly I believe that if you play, you pay. It's that freakin' simple. Most people seem to think a credit card is a license to spend money-- IT'S NOT!

Also, I sympathize with 'collector x', in that it's a job, they are paid to try to collect someone else's money. If they don't collect anyone's money they don't get paid. If you owe a friend money would you scream obscenities if they call and ask for it? Probably not.

In my experience, when you are pleasant to the telemarketers they are pleasant in return. I know there are exceptions to this rule, but even when someone calls my number and starts being rude to me, I don't scream in return. I hang up. It's a simple operation that cuts off a lot of this conflict. Everyone obviously has caller ID, so it's your choice to answer and it is continuously your choice to keep the conversation going.

And finally, to English Major, (I hope my spelling is correct enough for you) obviously you didn't major in logic. You say your mother didn't live beyond her means, yet she is now in debt. Doesn't that mean she spent money she didn't actually have and then couldn't repay it with the money she has? I'd call that "living beyond your means."

Bottom line, pay what you borrow or spend only the money you actually have.

Psst...If you?re going to claim to be intelligent, use spell-check.

Anyway, I just came across this forum today, and I just wanted to put in my story for y'all to think on.

I am twenty-two years old, and I live with my mother at her house. My mother is 75% deaf, and cannot hear over the phone. No one has power of attorney for her; she has always done well independently.

Recently, she got into some debt, and I am telling you this woman does NOT live beyond her means. (She is still watching T.V. on a Zenith.) NCO bought her account and has been RUTHLESS in their calling.

They have disclosed the debt amount and original account holder to not only me, but also my 85-year-old grandparents who live across the country.

Every time I have talked to one of their reps, I have been accused of being the debtor. I have been cursed at, I have been called names, and I have been yelled at!

I guess, in their defense, they have never called past 9PM. =)

I am just wondering if they have ever heard that old saying, "You catch more flies with honey than vinegar."

well...ill let you in on a little secret of mine...I HATE IT!!!
YEAAAAAHHHHH!!!!...any ways, i thought i would fill some peopl in on a little insight...I, am currently employeed at NCO, I, can not stand my job...I, have been wishing to quit for about a year now, well atleast all of 2007, and its not because of you, my fans, my debtors.....its because of my boss and all those that are-managers-...See there is a variable inside the collection office that above anything is the most annoying...and that is a question, posed all the time...and it is....Why isnt there any money off my board yet?..or maybe its, Lets get on the phone and make that bonus!...no maybe, just maybe its-you've been here for 8 hours and you still havent collected anything.....welly welly welly well...let me tell you something....there is nothing like a job that demands as much as it does, and in order to get anywhere whatso ever, you must rely on people to pay their bills...yeah, i have to wait to pay my own bills, until i get you to pay yours...great, isnt it?....anyways, im not pissed at you...I UNDERSTAND YOU!!! the only thing is i cant seem to find my way out to be with you, i have to do this, it is what ive been doing for almost 4 yrs now...im only 24!!!! its what i know...So please, next time you get a call from a collector, take a second before you cussem' out or try to make an a** out of them, which usually, not gonna lie, we try to get you going for our own kicks....sad...oh well,...before you cuss us out, remind yourself the person on the other line, technically only wants you to pay something, shtman ill take 50.00 a month on every accnt in my desk, itll put me over my goal...but see, we can only really get ahold of like 15 percent of our desk, the rest is just spinning numbers to make it look like were working...im writing this at my desk at work right now...:) hope you dont mind NCO.....well i dont know if what i just wrote is logical or not, but im not soo pissed im still at work, ive only got 25 minutes left in my shift...thanks for reading....collector X

Hey debt collectors, you better wake up. The Internet is educating more and more consumers re their rights with a debt collection agency. There will be more and more lawsuits and fines. I know firsthand that most CAs violate the law constantly. You a-holes exploit every loophole in the FDCPA but get pissed when the consumer asserts their rights. The FDCPA says that a CA must send written notice of the alleged debt within 5 days of the initial contact. How many CAs do that? Almost none. In my opinion and it has been supported in court, leaving a message or even calling and hanging up is an initial contact. So where is the written notice? It rarely follows. Why are you scumbag CAs so afraid to put anything in writing? Most likely, you are calling the wrong person or dont have the required proof of the debt or even more frequent recently you are trying to collect a debt that is outside the Statute of Limitations. I am not against debt collection. But if someone owes you money dont harass them.
Send them a letter showing why they owe it and tell them to pay up or you will sue. If you cant put it in writing then you are full of Sh-t. Ask
anyone who knows about fraud and they will confirm. So screw you NCO and
all other CAs. This website will continue to educate consumers and put every dumbass CA that doesnt have its sh-t together out of business!!!!!

Heeding the warnings of a debt collector on the perils of credit counseling is like heeding the warnings of a bar owner on the perils of sobriety.  Neither is any position to be objective in such matters.

For a less sympathetic account, see: http://www.budhibbs.com/debt_collector.htm

And no consumer site I know of recommends NOT paying valid debts; simply to demand validation of same as well as common courtesy and observance of FDCPA from any collector.  No one should be bullied or intimidated into rash responses by creditors who apparently feel they can bulldoze consumers with threats and guilt trips.

Given the ton of horror stories re: NCO on websites, forgive the strong suspicion that the above is a plant by an NCO source - maybe an attempt to soften an already-battered image done little good by the abusive and childish posts by a collector on 9/28.

By the way. Try to steer clear of "credit counseling" companies. Over the years I came across too many poeple who had falling for thier trap. In the end you are in more debt than you began with. the Truth about them? They CANNOT stop us from calling. They CANNOT lower or stop your interest. And no credit card company or collection agency works with them to lower your minimum payment. That is an actual percentage set by the federal government. Which, if you have noticed, just doubled. The rich politicians cant seem to understand that people that can only make minimum payments are now only paying half of the bills they used to because they didnt get raises to go with inflation and politics. Must be nice to be born with a silver spoon.
    Good luck to all. :)

To all concerned,
The advice of some on this site is incorrect. As a former professional debt collector of over ten years i may be able to offer some advice. The people that claim to not pay your bill and call them for advice on how to sue debt collectors are uninformed. The "fact" that you can sue us for even calling is incorrect. We have to have caused intentional distress to you. This, however, is rarely the case and almost impossible to prove. The fines that NCO paid went to our ever greedy government, not you. And the whole time you are fighting this the interest on your accounts is racking up at up to 29.99%!
Also don't be fooled by those that say we threaten to sue but never do. NCO itself has a very large, very dedicated legal department. Trust me, I worked there for a number of years and had a lot of experience with them. As well as agencies, almost all clients (not you, the people you owe) are ready and willing to sue on our recommendation.
The idea that "this is all just sold and resold" is also untrue. At NCO they do purchase debt, but only about 5% of what they are calling on. The rest is contractually outsourced to them by the credit card companies.
So here is the advice, when they call, talk to them. If you get a rude collector on the phone, call back tomorrow and talk to someone else. We are always willing to help you reach a reasonable payment arrangement. However, offering 5, 10, or 20 dollars a month IS unacceptable. We have guidelines set by our clients as to what we can do. In most cases we can also save you some money to close the account in the form of a settlement. Please also remember, we do have a difficult job and most collectors do get burnt out from time to time. We get hung up on, cussed at, and threatened 200 - 300 times a day. It does take it's tole on even the nicest people. If you are nice to us and willing to work on an arrangement we will do the same with you.
I hope this may have cleared up some misconceptions about debt collectors. And by the way, I'm not trying to boost NCO by any means. I am no longer an employee there nor a debt collector at all.

Debt Collector
FORGET THE POSTS FROM 9/28 ABOVE.  DO YOU THINK DEBT COLLECTORS WHO LIE AND ABUSE WHEN THEY CALL YOU WON'T LIE AND ABUSE WHEN THEY POST MESSAGES?

DON'T TALK TO THESE SCAM ARTISTS!  They will not and cannot clear up your credit report, they'll just take your money and re-sell the debt to the next sleazy collector.  They will threaten all kinds of legal action, but without debt verification, which they never possess, this is unlikely.  Include all the debts they're trying to collect on that are barred from legal collection by state statute, and the violations of FDCPA and FCRA that they themselves are piling up with their empty threats and legal posing, and you'll realize why the only lawyers these people ever meet are the ones defending them when they're sued.  This outfit is beyond scum - take a look at this from the Bud Hibbs website (AND PAY PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO THE PARAGRAPH ABOUT THE QUALITY OF EMPLOYEES THESE PEOPLE HIRE - explains a lot about why the posts for 9/28 above sound like a temper tantrum by a four-year old):

ONE OF AMERICA'S WORST COLLECTION AGENCIES!!!

******** CONSUMER ABUSE  ALERT  **********

NCO Group to Pay Largest FCRA Civil Penalty to Date

One of the nation?s largest debt-collection firms will pay $1.5 million to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that it violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) by reporting inaccurate information about consumer accounts to credit bureaus. The civil penalty against Pennsylvania-based NCO Group, Inc. is the largest civil penalty ever obtained in a FCRA case.

According to the FTC?s complaint, defendants NCO Group, Inc.; NCO Financial Systems, Inc.; and NCO Portfolio Management, Inc. violated Section 623(a)(5) of the FCRA. The law specifies that any entity that reports information to credit bureaus about a delinquent consumer account that has been placed for collection or written off must report the actual month and year the account first became delinquent. In turn, this date is used by the credit bureaus to measure the maximum seven-year reporting period the FCRA mandates. The provision helps ensure that outdated debts ? debts that are beyond this seven-year reporting period ? do not appear on a consumer?s credit report. Violations of this provision of the FCRA are subject to civil penalties of $2,500 per violation.

The FTC charges that NCO reported accounts using later-than-actual delinquency dates. Reporting later-than-actual dates may cause negative information to remain in a consumer?s credit file beyond the seven-year reporting period permitted by the FCRA for most information. When this occurs, consumers? credit scores may be lowered, possibly resulting in their rejection for credit or their having to pay a higher interest rate.

NCO is so bad, that in 2003, they have been sued 40 times for violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). These suits are usually filed when consumers are abused in violation of state and federal debt collection laws.

NCO is a money-mill, gobbling up competitors, buying portfolios of old debts for pennies, and expanding globally. These money-beggars are making their bottom-line profits at the expense and abuse of consumers.

One wonders how many lawsuits are NOT being filed because consumers do not know their rights or that NCO CAN be held accountable for their illegal debt collection practices.

Apparently, NCO is not spending enough time and money to properly train their debt collectors in accordance with law, the FDCPA. Do they hire any derelict that may be in-between court and treatment dates simply to harass, abuse, and oppress consumers? There is no mention of drug testing at their web site, so can you be hired at NCO if one has bad habits and a need for fast-cash. This must be a 'dream-job' for anyone with a prison record, drug habit, or any con artist out to defraud some fast money off unsuspecting consumers. Are you aware of the personal consumer information these money beggars have access to? I shudder to think how much information is being illegally used at agencies such as NCO. You should be VERY nervous about the type of individuals who have this unprecedented and open access to ALL of your personal information.

It's just a matter of time until collectors start calling with accents from countries like India, Pakistan and....(ooohhh my gawd!!)

NCO's CEO, Michael J. (kinky) Barrist seems to be astonishing Wall Street (NASDAQ:NCPM) with his financial wizardry. He certainly appears to be pumping up the bottom line. (One lawsuit at a time?) In my experience, this type of greed and consumer abuse will catch up with NCO, just as it did with Commercial Financial Systems (CFS) and Outsourcing Solutions Inc (OSI). Both operations were out of control just prior to their filing for bankruptcy protection. CFS's top brass is facing federal criminal charges in highly anticipated court proceedings scheduled for later this year.

If you are receiving abuse from NCO, contact me for referral to a local consumer law professional in your area. NCO, with $800+million in revenues last year, has more money than a South American drug cartel, so use the law to make them pay when they violate the laws and your consumer rights.

Do not let NCO's under-trained, uneducated and FDCPA lacking debt-collectors make a paycheck at your expense.
Big agencies pay big salaries to their ego-driven brass. NCO should spend a lot more time training their collectors and dealing with consumer complaints, in this case BIGGER does NOT mean BETTER! (Except for Kinky and his top brass team of money beggars)

REPEAT: TALKING TO THESE THIEVES ONLY ENCOURAGES THEM.  Ignore their calls, send a cease-and-desist letter, and if necessary, contact NACA for additional assistance.  NEVER GIVE THEM BANKING OR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION.  No matter how bad things are, dealing with these jerks will only make it worse. Don't be intimidated: it's what they want.  Best of luck to all.
