They say they're American Express but they're not!  Don't give out your credit card #s or personal info to anyone who calls you!  They should already have that info if they're legit!

I am receiving annoying, repeated calls from "American Express" asking to return the call to this 800 number saying in their message, "this is regarding an important business matter and not a sales or marketing call". They have called my work phone four days in a row now from phone # 623-492-6031. Like some other reports, when I called to check it out, they asked for my SSN which I did not give them (duh!). I'd hate for someone to fall for this, as the menu on the 800 # sounds very legitimate. Don't be fooled by this!!

I Called AMEX (# on back of card) to verify. It turned out it to be an AMEX Card Service #. They apologized and said they had called me in error.

They have called me several times a day for the last month or so, even in the middle of the night.  

I called the number on the back of my American Express card and they said they do not recognize this number as their own, my account has no problems and said to not give them my card number.

I called the fraud number and told the lady to stop bothering me, and to remove me from their list.  She kept asking for my American Express number and I told her, my account was in good standing, but to remove my phone number from her telemarketing list.

I received this call and called American Express directly.  The number on the back of my card.  The agent confirmed that the ONLY number you should call about your account is the number on the back of your card.

We had a call from this number and it smelled.  I googled for it and found this thread, and then called the number.  Since it is a Sunday night, they put their number on auto-respond and the announcement said it was the "American Roller Company", which I find to be a pretty interesting name.  Be careful -- they are out to "roll" you.

99% sure it's a scam. DO NOT give out your number! Spent 15 minutes on the phone with a REAL American Express customer service rep (dialed the number on the back of my card) and though the recorded message is eerily similar on the 1-800-238-8091 number, the AMEX rep said she could not verify that it was indeed an AMEX internal number.

If you do call them and get an operator, ask them for their phone ID number (an internal code used by AMEX reps). That should get them to hang up with you quickly.

UPDATE:

After receiving the first call that I made the first comment about I went online and found the American Express Fraud protection line and called them - I asked them if that number was one of theirs and they said no. So I alterted them of this fraudulent number (as it asks for account numbers immediately when you call)

So today we got this call again. I called the number back and when I finally got in touch with a representative. I told them that I didn't want to tell them my name, but that we keep getting a call to return their call and we want to be taken off of the call list, I also mentioned that I belive them to be a scam as when I called American Express they did not know of their number. I told the lady i need to be placed on a do not call list immediately. She took my number down and said it would be taken care of!

Keep getting a call that says they are american express, we get it at our company once a day. No one in the office (small office of 5) has an american express card.
I called and very sternly let them know that the call is annoying and that we want them to take us off of their call list as no one in the office has an american express card.
The customer service representative told me that we have to call and have this placed on the do not call list as they 'have no way to look up accounts by phone numbers' which is pretty much BS, because any company the size of american express would have a pretty extensive database that would have several different search options.
I told her that she needs to figure something out because the phone calls (once or twice a day) were becoming difficult for us to run our business and she said that she would transfer me over to customer service. i sat on hold for 10 minutes.

I agree, they are not legit.  Do not give out your personal info.  They too asked for our corporate card number.
