Mr. Martin from Sterling "legal department" contacted ( 888-360-2638) me regarding a past debt. As others have stated he was rude and stated I was being investigated. When I asked for the investigation details he refused to me any info. He stated a letter was mailed to me but is was an address I haven't lived at for 3 years. I offered my new address and he refused it. He states on Thursday he'll be filing with the court and have all assets taken as well as having the Police at my door with a summons!!! He would not tell me his first name or address and stated I was playing games by asking and kept referring to me as "lady"
My debt is for $600!!! Does this company have the right to do this?? Please help.

Their website is not working. Are they still in business? I too was victimized with the harassing phone calls, threats of a court date and threats to contact my neighbors. I contacted my local better business bureau and Florida?s better business bureau. They also placed a collection on my credit. These people need to burn in hell!

In December I got his calls. My sister-in-law first recived the call- the first one was saying my church should be aswered as such. (I run a small church)-full 503c group.  Anyways then the second call was they were going to send someone over to take pictures of all my assests. The 3rd time was that there was a court date already set  for me.  When i finally contacted them- the lady I dont remeber her name- said that I was in copyright infrignment. You see in 2010 my church held a weekend camping retrat and we had some vendors- well on the website we used a picture from the vendors own personal website.  Well the lady went on to say her client was the owner. I explained that it was afrom a other website and we were a church and tried to give her our churches information.
 Anways at first she wound me up that i got off the phone- I removed all pictures and apologized.  But she wanted payment for picture use. So I offered her 50 dollars.  that was laughed at she wanted over 5000 dollars.   So i hung up.  The following day i called back (after getting my head stright) I wanted in writing, their claimes, this client ( I still dont know his name) proof of ownership, and all information stated in their claim. The lady said she would email it to me.  I told her I wanted a certified letter to take to a lawyer to vailitad the claim ( I have never head of a collection agent going after someone for a picture on a website). Anyways i explained that is not want i wanted i wanted a letter, She asked" so a email is not good enough"?  I replied no its not i want a letter.
But before i could get the last words out of my mouth she yelled "I am making this as refusal to pay" and hung up on me.

 Well after that I though it was a scam and did not worry about. it. Now they placed a claim on my credit report- So i am working on deputing this and placing a complaint with the FTC.

So yes these people are lyers and decietful  any info on how to remove this from my credit and where to file more complaints please let me know

These people have also contacted my husband and his mother threathening jail time and being very rude and using  profanity. The guy says his name is Taylor Jones from Sterling United. He would not give us any info about his company address etc.   He started calling us from 1-888-423-3782.  Once I blocked this number he continued to call back from several different numbers, 1-347-328-0663 and 1-800-597-7015.  So I then blocked these numbers and THEN you won't believe this he called back and was somehow able to put in my mother-in-laws phone number so we thought she was calling and it was him!  Next day I was home alone and my husband's cell number came up on the caller id and again it was him!  This is called caller id spoofing and is very illegal!!  So I was ready to file complaints.He told us he was in our local area in WA and so I looked up the business name in the state registry to find nothing. So I googled the company for WA and found nothing.  After several threatening calls, even though we told him he was not to contact us again other than by mail, we decided to get ahold of the people that he told us hired him that we had previously owed the money too.  Once we told the company that hired him of this guy's actions they were completely shocked and gave us the information they had from the company, address, phone numbers, etc. so we could file a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission and to the Federal Communications Commission for the harrassment and the caller id spoofing.  These people need to be stopped!  This is totally ridiculous. They are also scamming the companies that hire them.  So here is the info I got on them:

WoW Reading over these messages, I will not say a lot of the personal thoughts Im having about this people, HOWEVER, There is help.
There are laws on the books, Specifically the Federal Debt Collection Practices act (F.D.C.P.A.), http://www.ftc.gov/os/statutes/fdcpajump.shtm

It lists the things Collectors can and cannot say, what they cannot do.
They cannot say they are calling to get your address to send a payment, Need to talk to your daughter regarding a police report, Going to call your friends, co workers, Employers, Landlords or anyone else not directly involved in the responsibility of the debt. That's is called 3rd party disclosure.

They cannot tell you someone has been in an accident or their sending police to pick you up or any other nonsense. they cannot tell your neighbor its an emergency to get you on the phone, or about the true nature of the call.

As having been an ethical agent who tried to Help people in their bad situations, I can tell you, these people by comparison to The law firm Judgment department are the equivalent, (in my opinion), of the Nazi's, to the German people as a whole.
The tactics of intimidation they are trying to use is also illegal as Im sure those of you who have posted that have attorneys already know.

Ok I used to work for a legal collection agency that ACTUALLY DID have cases after they had gone to a court for judgment , these people Have violated the No cal notification, as well as F.D.T.C.P. A. "Tom Kennedy" said he could no longer talk to me when i explained the debt had been paid cause he was going to "Call my landlord and tell them that Im a debtor" and that I better not take out any more services in the house Im renting because thats illegal" That I was a "Theif" becuase "it was the same as renting a car and never bringing it back" WTH is this guy talking about.

Just received a harassing call from "Mr. Fisher". Very threatening. Husband called back and stated he was recording call. Fisher said he wouldn't continue on with the conversation, but did anyway. Made ridiculous statements trying to get both of us upset so that we would say to much. Will be contacting Attorney General's Office in the morning.

Have been getting calls from Gina Weston, a debt collector who loves her work.  Has called my wife, threatened to call my neighbors, etc. She may suffer from Borderline or Psychotic Personality disorder, and is quite disturbed, possibly dangerous.

Her methods are unethical and she is very mean-spirited.  I suggest that any calls from her be recorded if doing so is legal in your state.  She crosses the line between honest debt-collection and extortion.

These folks also use 1-800-597-7077. My suggestion - when they contact you, they will advise you that they are debt collectors and the call may be recorded. Immediately respond that you are also recording the call, then do so. If you warn them, it is permissible. Next listen to them but give no information or affirmative response, only say as much as necessary to let their verbal tirades flow. They are not licensed attorneys if they make the misrepresentations which are being reported. If they are licensed, save the recordings for the disbarment hearings. Sterling United has their own website which implicitly advertises the unethical approach. Read it and have no fear. They have no teeth to lawfully threaten criminal action against you and must retain legal counsel in your state of residence to commence a civil collection action. This is very costly and not a successful route for them unless the debt you owe is large and you have assets with which to pay. (If that were the case you would have done so already.) I am taking the time to write this because I returned one of their calls on behalf of a client and personally experienced a tirade - my response was laughter - and it resulted in a conniption followed by a hang up.
I suggest you end your calls with them in a like manner. Civil conversation is not on the agenda with these folks.

To all of you that are having these same problems as I am. There is something you can do about it. I recieved the same threats from these people as you all have. If you did not know there is something called torts. Which has to do with civil suits. You can take them to court for all they are worth or just to take care of your debts. I am just like all of you, I have debts that these people have bought from my creditors that I have not been able to pay due to the economy. You can take them to court on this and win. I am going to do this as well. They called and said that they will have my a** for 20 years in those exact words. mr.martin or whoever he is has called and left several messages on my phone stating that he was investigating a case here in florida that involved me. when I got in touch with him he started asking me about paying a dept of 1600. dollars that I had no knowledge of at the time. I ask him to fax me a copy and I would discuss it with him then. he faxed it and continue to call two and three times a day even calling my son at work although he had my phone number not giving me time to get back in contact with him. everytime I called when I got off in the evening I would get this wierd answer machine. finally I contact him and told him that I could make a couple of payments and clear it up, he started telling me don't worry about it anymore that he had been investigating me and that I was a liar and I was bringing up my son wrong (my son is grown) and that he was going to have my wages garnished and have my car pulled out my yard and reck my whole life. at first I thougt it was a joke or prank call so I hung up and called back and it was the same man. I couldn't believe it this person was psychotic. I just hung up and searched out who this sterling and king was and found out that this was a collection agency not a law office as he insinuated in his messages. I made sure to save his messages and jot down our conversation. I looked up what rules he violated with the fair debt collection practice act. Today I got a message from 1888740 8762 or 2152798487, a Mr. Martin saying he's looking for either me or my husband with regards to an investigation about my daughter. My daughter picked up the phone and asked what it was because if it concerns her she wants to know. Mr. Martin refused to tell her and was looking for either me or my husband and sounded really rude and accused my daughter of being rude herself. When I got back home i called him back because i got scared my daughter may be in trouble. I called the 1-888 number and the message on the machine is that the party i am calling is not available at the moment but it didn't say what office it was. I finally spoke to this Mr Martin and he  started saying that after he spoke to my daughter he made up his mind to start litigation procedures and that he was with the district attorney when i was trying to call him earlier. I was asking him what it was all about and he just went on and on enumerating all my debts and credit history. That he knows about my life and he said, "I don't know what you are doing but you dont have to do anything now but wait for something to happen!"that I taught my daughter to speak rudely...I did not even raise my voice or anything just allowed him to talk but this man is totally trained to harass. I believe this is still the same people with Sterling & King, Gina Weston and Erin, he said he is looking at my checking account and I dont even have the money to pay for a lawyer..He mentioned about my tax leins(which I have taken cared of)and something about my apartment's rent. He has called my work place and once before they called my neighbor saying it was an emergency and they needed to speak to me or my husband. These people are  evil.I asked him what office is he working for, or what agency, or if he is a lawyer and he said he is more than that, his job is to do something for people who deserves this. He can not send an officer after you for a debt. They'd tell him to go pund sand. It's a scare tactic for sure.
