I get this call on a daily basis.  I never answer and block the number, but the following day they call from a different number.  Each time they leave a garbled voice mail message about AT&T credit and I'm tired of using minutes to erase messages.

As I was on the phone with yet another customer service tech( yea right) he gave me a phone number to call and promised they would fix me up. I called and it's the India hacker George. I believed our trusty Att staff , I mean after all they are here to HELP. I fell for it now my identity has been stolen. Att wiil not discuss this with me. Period. Now Att has blocked my number do I can't call tech support! However i called from another phone and they denied everything. Bottom line. I believe Att is getting a kick back from these companies. I have an I phone 5 that is under warranty and I have insurance. They won't do one thing to help. I call Att they transfer me to apple apple then sends me to Att store. Round and round! Ridiculous !!!!!im going to get service at any place and Att can kiss my rear!!!! Hours I've wasted sleepless nights anxiety over this. They said I'd have to pay 260  to get out of contract . Let them hold their breath and see how fast they get anything out of me. They said they would bill me. We'll I'm glad . I'm going to send them a bill as well. These Indian hackers are in with Att. Take over texas!!!!! I want my life back! Now?!!!!!'n

My husband received this call and reached out to me after the call ended.  Once he started telling me what happened I immediately knew it was a scam.  They didn't get any information because he didn't remember the passcode.  I'm the one that set up the account.  The surveyor got mad and hung up on him.  We dodged the bullet this time, but he learned a valuable lesson.  Don't give out any personal information to people calling you over the phone.

This happened to me as well yesterday 9/20/13 - I feel like an idiot for not following my intuition when asked for so much info they AT&T should already have. I did ask the surveyor why she needed this info on the account and she said it was to verify my account. Complete bull.

I guess I'm just posting here to add to the chain and provide more detail - call came in around 5pm EST and was a hispanic accented woman's voice, the whole call took no more than 3 min. She offered to credit my account 20.00 so I accepted. I have gotten credits before from AT&T so it seemed feasible.

I am now concerned bc they have the last 4 of my social, my name and my email. I have set a new passcode at the AT&T store on my account and received a new SIM.  They also had me change my password, email and ID on the wireless website log in, which I thought was a good tip.

I called AT&T fraud dept and they did not give me a straight answer on the resolution of this problem. Clearly it's been going on for sometime and they are having to credit lots of accounts so I dont know why they are slacking on solving this fraud issue. They must be losing money too! Anyway, if anyone has info on what to do after your partial SSN is exposed please post.

so I fell for this also.  as I've been reading these posts, I notice that this has been happening for a year or so!!! how and why has AT&T not done anything to prevent this from happening?  and then as I'm on this page I look to my left and see an equifax add.  the fraud department told me, you might want to got to equifax to make sure that they didn't do anything else on your credit since they have your information now.  seems shady, considering how large of a company AT&T is that they would allow somebody to hack their number for this long (coming up on my phone as AT&T customer care).  Also the last person I talked to about my bill, right before this happened, was an Indian guy.  And the guy that scammed me, almost two days after I talked to the original Indian guy, was also Indian, and sounded exactly like him (even for them both having Indian accents, I really thought it was the exact same guy again).  So this might be an inside job, somebody working for AT&T feeding out numbers from people that they call, or have a night job scamming people on the side.  I just found it ironic that as I was reading about these scams, and AT&T recommending that I start an equifax account to prevent more fraud accumulating from this incident, that there was an equifax ad on the same page... Seems like a large company like AT&T would've prevented this from happening a long time ago, unless thery're getting kickbacks from... you guessed it... equifax!  shady

I too fell for this but I instantly had a bad feeling so I googled as soon as we hung up. I saw this thread then immediately called at&t. Sure enough it is a scam so we took the precautions to protect my account. I feel stupid but happy to have googled these type calls. Beware. Lesson learned. Thank you to all who posted. The more we share the less people get scammed.

A true story, a bit long but intended for anyone who cares.
Yes they got me - I was a fool although I hate to say it. I was on the street after my lunch on a Friday. The caller ID showed AT&T Customer Care 800-335-0500 that I knew is a legitimate number. Yeh the caller had a slight accent but these days banks and credit card companies all place their service center overseas. I was asked to do a brief survey. Well, since I was on my leisure time, OK. Then after I answered a couple of typical questions, I was told in thanking me for doing the survey, I shall be credited $20 each per line. Sounds good...and then the tricky part, I was asked to give the last 4 digits of SSN. I have to say I had doubt at that moment and normally I would have asked the caller to identify himself or I would have declined if he asked me to provide my full SSN, but I knew the number is legitimate and there were too often I was asked to provide the last 4 SSN, and hence I gave it in. PS: I think the spoofer is getting smarter psychologically. He may be a reader of this board.

The next thing... on the following Monday, I received a phone call from EXACTLY same number and ID AT&T Customer Care 800-335-0500; and a AT&T lady told me that someone has tried multiple times to add new lines to my account but he/she hung up every time when it reached a point that they were asked to verify themselves. I told her about the survey and instantly the lady said it is a spoofer fraud but AT&T has secure measures in place and no damage has incurred. She suggested me to add a pass code to my account. - Again, I had some doubt - how do I know if she is a genuine AT&T employee. I didn't ask her to verify herself. Instead I gave her a pass code as I wanted to see if she will ask for my personal confidential information. She didn't. I then logged in my online account, and yes I need to input the pass code and it worked, EVERYTHING WAS FINE. - The story was not over yet.

After about another half an hour, I found my cell phone says something wrong with the SIM card and then it's out of service. I logged into my account on my computer, MY TWO LINES WERE BOTH SUSPENDED by AT&T. I called AT&T 800-335-0500 (yes, the same number) and a nice guy from the Fraud dept told me at almost the same time when the lady called me and added a pass code, someone tried to add international service to my account, and hence my account was suspended triggered by somewhat security measure.  I was also told that if I see any international charge on my next bill, call him back and get it resolved. By the end of the day, I had to bring my phones to AT&T stores and got new SIM cards...took me some time not too bad.

So far nothing really harmful occurred, but the shadow is hanging over my identity security. Who knows what this spoofer can do with the last 4 digits of SSN?

The same happen to me and call ATT customer service and forwarded me to ATT's Global Fraud Center (1-877-844-5584) and report the incident. They did put a 4 digit security code on top of the SSN's last 4 digit.

If this happen to you, call ATT right away and avoid future headaches.

Same thing happened to me today, and I fell for it. Feeling dumb and naive right now. I immediately google the number and this website came first. After reading everything it was written here I called AT&T and they gave me a new password for every time I call customer service or try to log in to my online account. Guess what? Lesson learned!!!

All true. I'm ashamed to say I fell for it, even though alarm bells started going off with the lame generic questions being " surveyed". Luckily, AT&T was calling me a couple of days later asking for verifications on account activity. So kudos to them for having a security measure in place. I changed pin codes to the acct and thankfully suffered no further aggravation than 20 mins on the phone. If you don't think damage can be done with "JUST the last 4 didgets of your SSN, think again!

I called ATT to check on this.  In fact, this IS an authentic ATT customer service number BUT it is NOT AT&T. The scammers have used an app that cloaks their real number with an ATT cust service number in order to conduct a bogus ATT survey and get personal info.

ATT verified that this is their number but it is an incoming customer service number--they never use it for anything like surveys (which are all automated anyway). They are aware of this scam and that they have hijacked this number. Others have given up personal info and had their cell phone accounts hacked and hundreds of dollars of charges made. Scary stuff.

Another ATT survey.  Promised a short 1-2 minute survey for a $20 credit.  After the survey they got my name and zip code, then asked for the last four digits of my Social Security number for "verification" purposes.  I asked why they would need that--they already have our account info.  More gobbledygook explanations from the "surveyor."  I said no thanks at that point.
Caller had a pronounced Latino accent.
Why is this scam still operating from this same 800 number four months after the first reports above?
Are there specific law enforcement places we should contact beyond this site?

The same thing happen to my husband and I, and also on a separate account it happened to my mother and her husband. They called to do a survey and asked for the last 4 of our social security numbers and of course since they were calling from an AT&T customer care number we gave it to them, they sounded professional, they told us if we completed the survey we would get $20 per line off our next phone bill. Before they hung up they said if we have any questions to call them back on that number so it sounded legit, 3 days later our cell phones changed to no service, we couldn't even call 611 on them, we went to an AT&T store where they replaced our SIM cards. I looked at my online usage today and for the couple hours they had control of our account there were 20 calls placed to Cuba for a total of 58 Minutes of international calling (Which will of course be refunded by AT&T). Beware of these scams, AT&T will never call you and ask for your Social Security number. (BTW they did all of this with just the last four digits of my social- they called into customer care and changed all of our passwords as well). Lesson learned.

Got a call from these people too. Sounds like a scam. I think what they do is they try to get enough information from you (and from what is available to the general public) so that they can call AT&T and cancel your account.

had the same thing happen to me, same thick accent, sounded like a Hispanic woman, ask me if i wanted a 65 dollar discount for my AT&T bill, I was like...hmmmm ok, so she continue to talk and said I need to answer 3 questions to get the discount and I was like ok, then she wanted to confirm my name, the account holder, so I told her my name I even spelled it, but she couldn't understand so, I ask back to her to verified my name and spelling and she totally spelled it wrong.  I kept asking her to spell it while she kept asking me to spell my name so I gave her a fake name due to the lack of response so I could see where this was going, so then we proceeded to finish the process, she then stated that i need to verify the last 4 digits of my social security number, "..for security purposes" I was already skeptic and feel this was a scam so I gave her 4 made up numbers, and funny thing is she said "ok, we have verified your account, and you will be discounted with 65 dollars on your next bill" DON'T TRUST THEM, TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE!! 3 SIMPLE QUESTIONS TO ANSWER FOR 65 DOLLARS,,,, YEAH RIGHT!!

I received a call today from 800-331-0500 that showed up as AT&T Customer Care giving me the same survey story and a ten percent discount on my bill. The call had terrible reception and the person had very thick accent. I gave them poor ratings on every question and also the wrong zip code. I kept waiting for him to ask me the eventual request for personal information, so when he asked for the last 4 digits of my social, I told him "don't think so." He then asked "you don't want the discount and I told him "Nope". He said thanks and bye.

It's kind of scary to think that if the persons were to speak perfect English and have had some type of recording playing in the back ground that sounded like a normal call center, I hate to admit it but they probably would have fooled me.

P.S. He was also way to anxious to give me his badge number over and over again when I said I couldn't hear him! What scary times we live in nowadays!

I just got a call from 800-335-0500 they hung up on me when I started questioning why AT&T would be calling me from what seemed to be India since the person on the other side was speaking with a very thick accent. (I work in the IT world and I am very sure that was someone from India) there was a lot of static which sounded like an oversees call.... They hung up on me, darn I really wanted the credit.. ;0)   Be careful this is a scam!!!!

Got a call from this number April 17, 2013.  They said they were from AT&T and conducting a survey.  In return for answering the questions they would credit the account $65.  Then they proceeded to ask for my name and number on the account in order to give the credit.  I called AT&T back to see if they were conducting the survey.  They said they do not do phone surveys.
