I agree with both side of the argument.  I owe money to Springleaf Financial Services (formerly American General) and they call ALL the time.  I did not know that 800 337 9538 was American General, but now I understand.

They DO harrass and call all the time, but as one observer noted, if you paid your bills on time, they wouldn't call.  But it's rude to call AND hang up as they do almost every morning.  Then I have to *69 to figure out the calling number.  It's agravating, and they don't give up!  At 25% interest, they're certainly making enough money, but I'm the stupid person who took out the loan with them in the first place.  At least it's under $1,000 now!

This number 800 337 9538, used to be for AIG Finance but is now SpringLeaf.  They are a collection agency.  Normally very nice people that call but they do leave too much personal information on the answering machine.

That may be true, but credit card companies and the like don't start hassling people until they are 30 days past due that I know of. This is a form of harassment on the part of bill collectors. Even mortgage companies give a grace period.

Yeah, so you work for a company that had to take billion of Federal Bailout funds because they totally mismanaged their company, and now you have the nerve to lecture other people on paying their bills on time ?

And in case you missed it, while companies do have a right to reasonablly try and collect money owed to them, there are laws in place to protect consumers from being harrassed. Consumers have a write to send creditors a "Cease and Desist" all phone contract letter, and the creditors must obey - it's the law.

I have sent such letters to creditors who have abused the right of having my phone number. I don't mind a collection call or two, but when a creditor calls continously, with no regard, then I cut them off, and force the to communicate via the mail only.

Yeah 800-337-9538 is American General.

They financed a loan for me with a computer retailer. They can be silly sometimes. They'll call and open the conversation by saying... "I'm calling about your overdue account."

I respond by saying... "Well, do you want to tell me where you are calling from first ?" ...haha.

I was only 7 days late, and they are already calling.  This from the same company that had to take billions in Federal Bailout funds because they've mismanaged their company, while the executives took big bonuses.

Report them if they infringe upon your rights as outlined in the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. They are likely to still pursue the debt, but ironically they could very well suffer penalties larger then the amount they are seeking to collect. And perhaps better, you will be paying them with the FINE that they owe you. So long as these companies pursue a lawless nature of doing business, we should pursue putting them out of business.

See the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. American General is FAMOUS for breaking the law, primarily when it comes to sharing your details with neighbors and family members. They are not allowed to share your debt information with ANY third party. The most they can do is be 'looking for you". If they convey your debt information to a third party other then another collection agency or creditor (such as your employer, or spouse or neighbor)..then they broke the law and are liable for a fine. Report them.

Use the following link to report any infractions that this company, or any other makes:

yes - getting this message to call EVERY DAY at 8am and on weekends. People have periodically been calling my # for years now asking for Joanna Torres which is not me. I told the live caller then to remove my number, that's not me, I've had my number for over 10yrs. Now I'm getting the automated calls too from Am. Gen. Finance. I called them and they removed the number. They said if you get more calls it's probably some other collection agency. We'll see...

A message was left on my answering machine that started in the middle of the recording stating: [cut off]...General Financial Services "not a solicitation, please call 800-337-9538...".  I reverse looked up the 800 number and got its an AT&T number.  But the "status date" is 11/16/1995.   Finally I found this page.

Yeah, I got a call today too.  I called them back and gave them the number that they called me on.  They were looking for someone that I had no clue who it was.  It is interesting, though, they were not the first ones to call looking for this same Latino individual (I am not Latino).  They were nice about it and said they would take my name out of their database.  We'll see.

I thought it was a scam. First think they ask for when you call back is for your Social Security Number or Account number. Turns out it is American General.  American General has the account, The Bedding Company.  I think American General takes care of a lot of different accounts.  It would have been better if they would have said The Bedding company because we just bought a bed and I know we owe on that.
If you do not feel comfortable giving them your SSN, you can just give them your name, they should be able to tell you what account they are referring to.
