I received a voicemail at work from this number that said it was NFCU, which I do bank at.  So, instead of calling 800-355-5096 I called NFCU at their main number.  The operator was very helpful and did confirm that is a NFCU number.  However, she was able to resolve the issue and went over my transactions to ensure there wasn't any fraud.  If you're ever in doubt always call your banks main number to be safe.

I think you mean the square root of negative 64056894174707569216.  That gives you the correct magnitude and a 10 digit number.  Otherwise, you have to dial too many digits and a decimal point!

LOL!  How cool would it be if caller ID would show it as "the square root of negative 800-355-5096"!

Of course the number is real.  Whenever I dial a pure imaginary number, I always get a recording that says that I have to rotate my phone 90 degrees and dial again.

Part of a fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions.  Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming the number is real - an obvious giveaway.

The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real come from some con artists spamming the site to try to fool people.  There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:

Got the same message as everyone else. They just wanted to verify some purchases that I had made. I am glad that they do it. That way they can catch any wrongdoings.

Auto generated call on behalf of my bank, but when I called it did ask me to verify my last three charges, one of which was fradulent!  I was then connected to NFCU where they verified everything else.  They never asked me for my account number or anything out of the ordinary that they don't usually ask for when I call - they just wanted to make sure I was "me", just like I wanted to be sure they were "them".

Amd thanks to NFCU for blocking a fradulent charge!!!

I recieved a call from 800-355-5096 about charges on my checkcard. Caller ID actually showed the correct main NFCU number but that can be spoofed.  I called the NFCU main number and they verified charges and life is good. Good number but I still will always call a main *known* number. Have a great day!

I received a call from this number, 800-355-5096, today. I called Navy Federal and they had no record of the call. I opted to call back after checking this forum, and am glad I did. The number does appear to belong to Navy Fed. They did ask me to verify my last three transactions, and I had to provide very little info to do so. The automated system already had all the information about me, I just had to positively confirm everything. All transactions were mine and nobody stole my data or money. I suspect the reason fraud was suspected is that I had just received a new bank card, and began using it for several purchases immediately after activating it. I did this after having made several purchases on my old card the very same day, prior to activating my new card. This call was legitimate, though I was very skeptical at first, and am glad I did check this forum prior to doing anything. Best of luck.

I got a voicemail from this number today.  It was a recorded message from my bank about some recent check card activity and they told me to call 1-800-355-5096.  It sounded like a scam, but I called my bank directly and it was a valid call.  They were questioning some charges and wanted to make sure I had used the card for them and that the card hadn't been stolen.

I am a Navy Federal Credit Union employee.  We use a system called "Adeptra," which is a fraud dialer for debit cards.  If there is suspected fraud on the card, Adeptra places phone calls to the phone number(s) on record.  On your caller ID, it will appear as if the call is coming from our contact center and general number the public uses to contact us which is 888-842-NFCU(6328).  The system does ask you to call 800-355-5096 to get directly in touch with a fraud analyst.  If you don't feel comfortable, call the 888 phone number.  There will mostly likely be no notes on the accounts and we won't have any knowledge of the phone call but should ask you to go over all charges for the current day on the card just to be on the safe side.  I do not know if other credit unions or banks use this system, but if you are with Navy Fed, it is a valid number! Call it back to protect your card! Have a wonderful day

I use Navy Federal Credit Union and received a call from this number.  They said to call back, which I did, and had to verify 3 transactions that were on my check card.  One of them was mine and two weren't.  Someone obtained my information and took $1100 from me.  Getting a call from this number can be a good thing.

Message on my answering machine said to call this number regarding a questionable charge on my VISA bankcard. Called the number on the back of the card instead. They had no record of having tried to contact me. So I suspect this was phishing. Beware. Always call back the number you know. Not the one left on the answering machine.

I got a message on my voicemail late last week, purporting to be an "important fraud prevention phone call" from my bank regarding recent credit card activity, and advising me to call back 1-800-355-5096.  Sounded like phishing to me; I'm contacting my bank directly and asking them if they know anything about it.
