What do you do if they put a lien on your records for someone that is not you, another social security number all together. Isn't that illegal all together?

I get calls from this number too and it seems to belong to a couple of different collection agencies that have merged.  Mann Bracken LLC, Wolpoff & Abramson LLP, and Eskanos & Adler, P.C.  They also hire outside attorneys to represent them but the attorneys use the Mann Bracken LLC name but the attorneys address.  Not sure this is legal.

Received call on 2/1/10 at 0920a.m. I answered my phone with hello, I could hear somebody on the other line and I repeated hello 3 more times. I didn't get a response, so I hung up. I looked up the number on reverse number lookup and found this sight. It was helpful. At least now I know the person calling was a debt collector. I don't owe anyone money on an unpaid debt, so I really do not know what their intent was. Thanks for this helpful sight.

This number seems to be a generic number that many bussinesses/collection agancies/Political polsters use for a caller ID to mask who they really are. I got a call from this number and it was a special interest group that patches supporters of through to thier local Senator's office to tell their senator to support immagration reform.
However others from the same number have gotten bill collectors or offers to buy things.

This same 800 number (800.364-9919) also shows up as 1.925.364-9919 with CALIFORNIA being the source of the caller on my caller I.D. If you call the 925 number back a message stating "this number is not in service" will play. Hence, there will be no answer.

If either the 800 number or 925 number shows up, simply ignore it. It takes awhile but eventually they WILL stop calling. Just a bit annoying though.

If you have the time, there is a ton of information on the net on how to deal with debt collectors, lawyers representing agencies, debts you want to settle and debts you do not want to pay off. Do your homework and get informed before talking with a collector. Actually, don't ever talk to them. If they do catch you on the phone tell them to stop harassing you or you will never pay the debt and to only contact you by mail if they wish to continue any type of negotiation. This gives you the time to think out your response, create a plan of action, delay any kind of payment, and most importantly gives you the upper hand to get more help on dealing with the situation.

Cheers!

These guys don't give up. Tell them that you are going bankrupt and your attorney will be in touch. This is about the only way to get these guys off your back and even then it may be temporary.

I got a call from Alberto and Ms. Thompson at 1-800-364-9919.  They claim that they are calling from the law firm Mann Bracken, and they need to speak to me.  What they are REALLY doing is using a scare/extortion tactic (WHICH IS ILLEGAL) to have you call them back.  BY LAW, they should be telling you at the beginning of their message that "this is a collection agency, attempting to collect a debt..."  But they violate the law here.  Sleazy firms like this need to be penalized with hefty fees for violating these consumer protection laws.  Everyone who receives a call from them should call the Federal Trade Commission (who reagultes these collection agencies) and file a complaint. CALL the FTC at 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357).  Also see this consumer rights info: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/credit/cre18.shtm

I also received calls from this number.  They said the were from Mann Bracken LLC.  I found out that 3 collection compnies murged, Mann Bracken LLC, Wolpoff & Abramson LLP, and Eskanos & Adler P.C.  Mann Bracken will also hire ouside attorneys to represent them.  They will send you a letter and then within 10 days you will get a summons from an attorney telling you a lawsuit has been started in your state Superior Court.  The attorney will put Mann Bracken LLC on the letter but the address is to the attorney that they hired.  (Not sure if that is legal.)

Read this exerpt from the Boston Globe's article: "Debtors' Hell (Part 4):
National Crisis, Official Silence":

On Wall Street, debt-buying firms have become coveted investment targets. One publicly traded company in Norfolk, Va., Portfolio Recovery Associates Inc., collected $10.9 million from debtors as recently as 1998. Last year, it took in $191.4 million - annual revenue growth of 55 percent. Portfolio Recovery's profits, which were $402,000 in 1998, soared to $36.8 million in 2005.

The firm's results also illustrate how the industry turns pennies into millions.

In its first decade of operation, Portfolio Recovery purchased 658 debt portfolios with a face value of $16.4 billion - at a cost of only $415.4 million. That's about 2.5 cents for each dollar of debt purchased. It collects, on average, 7.5 cents per dollar.

The extraordinary expansion of the debt sold off for collection is one powerful force behind some of the collection abuses documented in the Spotlight investigation.

As debt is sold and re-sold, companies that buy the right to collect it often know little about the debtor: name, last known address, card issuer and account number, and amount due. That limited picture can cause problems for everyone involved.

http://www.boston.com/news/special/spotlight_debt/part4/page4.html

Once you read this and The Boston Globe's entire series "Debtors' Hell", can one begin to understand exactly WHY the debt collection industry is OUT OF CONTROL and WHY our government officials are doing NOTHING about it.
