Debt Collector
I got a call from this number.  The person said she was calling from E.C.M.C., a debt management company, because of a student loan I supposedly defaulted on from Duffs Business Institute in 1973.  I never attended Duff's.  She asked me for my date of birth.  I did not want to give it to her and asked her to tell me the date of birth of the person she was calling about and I would verify it if it was mine. She said she was not permitted to do that and asked me if I wanted to be transferred to file for a dispute.  After I quizzed her about what type of loan it was, when it was taken out, and where it originated, I did give her my dob.  She then said she had the wrong person and that she had already given me too much information about an account that wasn't mine.  I called the number back and it did connect to E.C.M.C.  Please tell me this was not a scam.  At no time did she ask for payment or a credit card.

ECMC called me at work. I looked them up online and then called them back and talked to them without giving them any valuable personal information. I voiced my hesitancy with their legitimacy and they stated much of what others have posted regarding them being enforced by the Dept. of Education to collect on defaulted student loans. They were able to look up the account they were calling on based upon my work phone number and my name. As I told them that I was ahead on all my student loans they asked for my birth year to verify that they were calling the correct person. I gave it to them and they then apologized for calling the wrong person. The person they were trying to contact has my same name. The took my work number and said that they wouldn't call it again. In the days of internet searches, I would think this would be a fairly common coinsurance. They sounded legit and they handled my call very professionally.

yes, the only way that you can get out of paying for something that after graduation you can't get a job is have the unfortunate circumstance of becoming disabled.  Depending on which one as long as you have the right paperwork and medical reports it is done somewhat easy.  There is one though that will play games by telling you on the paperwork what they want and don't need and then after you get what they need from the doctor they will go thru the bs of well...he didn't do this..he wasn't supposed to abbreviate this but do this one, etc....finally after a year and after the others had already cleared me they finally dropped it.  They do have a thing where they keep tabs on you for three years to see if you make money and if you do and don't report it they will come at ya hard I guess...anyway, don't know if that helps anyone or not...it ain't fun with the disability thing but if you have no choice because you cannot get hired anymore then it is your only  out...unless you are either a great Texas hold em player and can get in the tournmanent in vegas...but if you have the money to play then financial aid will want it...so there that goes.  anyway...like I said if it helps good if not...oh well....

ECMC keeps calling my work phone. Wonder why they won't call my personal phone. Already told them to send me everything in writing. NEVER rec'd anything. I already have dealt with my student loans. I'm a single mom, has a mortgage payment of $1200 only bring home $1500... you figure out that math. Of course I have financial hardship! I have no clue how to get them to quit harassing me!!

I made arrangemens to pay back my school loans and now this 800-367-1589 number tells me they have garnished my wages?  What the heck?  If they are going to do that then I should not have to keep paying my monthly payments anymore.  I never received a court order or an explanation in writing as to why they are doing this after I have already made monthly arrangements.  So now I have to call back ECMC to let them know I cannot afford to pay twice a month.  This makes no sense.  I have no problem making my arranged payments, but now they are taking out double!  This is not right.  When I call ECMC who I originally made arrangements with they tell me that they have nothing to do with the wage garnishment and they do not know why this is happening as I am current on my payments and not behind on my school loans. This additional garnishment screwed up my other bills and my Christmas.

I just simply do not answer them. They never leave a message anyhow. They claim I owe student loans -- I deny I owe them. They claim they do not have to show proof (crock a s***). I spoke with them many years ago. I have not spoken to them since (nor will I). An attorney advised me to NEVER answer, talk to them, acknowledge anything at all, etc. Thus, I will not ever talk to them again. They can call until they are blue in the face.

They have more than one number. If you call them to ask them to stop calling (because they have the wrong person), they start calling from another number.

I don't know if it's a "scam," but they're dishonest and rude.

If you owe the student loan they will hound you your whole life! Trust me.. they will take your federal taxes (easiest for them). It might take a few years, but its better than garnishing your wages which you'll feel in your pocket! And that really sucks!! So let them take it and in no time you'll be  "Free At Last..etc." LOL

You are quasi-correct in your response, but not really. The U.S. Dept of Ed has been negligent for quite some time. "Ed Fund" is a 501 c3. If the student just freely chooses to stop paying for a legitimate loan that is owed then Ed Fund has a right to collect.

However, if the loan was like a Ponzi scheme (scam), that is a different story. Your response is too generic.

Edfund are a bunch of crooks. Called and told me that i owed them almost $1000 on a loan. They put a lien on my tax returns and took the money. I've never had a loan through them. I had one through Salliemae, they said that was the loan. I told them i had paid it off in 2003 and had the paperwork to prove it. After a few more frustrating phone calls trying to recover MY money they admitted that there was an error in thier system and that they would refund the money. Never recieved it. Now they won't admit that there was an error. I have no recourse other than hiring an attorney that will cost well over the $1000 I want back. Once again workin man taking it in the end.

Debt collection agencies have a right to call you as many times as they'd like until you take action. Pick up the phone and tell the caller not to call that number anymore. They have to comply by law. If they don't, then you can report them to the FTC. To dispute the debt, send a written request for verification to the company calling. They must comply with your request within 30 days or stop all collection efforts. Read the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act for more information.

Ignoring them is not the way to go EdFund is legit. They are handling a defaulted loan of mine, much better than the original company that had it. If it's not your debt you need to talk to them about it or it will just keep getting worse. Ignoring things does not make them go away. Have them notate your account or something.

I have verified through the U.S. dept of education edfund is actually a legitimant organization that collects on student loans. There is no statue of limitations for student loans and your wages and Taxes will be garnished like mine are. It is a rude awakening. If you dropped out before you finished your schooling you maybe intitled tfo a partial refund which willbe taken off of your bill. Sorry for the bad news everyone!
