Correctamundo! These guys are the slimes who use these organizations as fronts to play on your sumpathies and then they give the organizations they are purported to represent a mere pittance of the funds they collect. In addition, contributions to this so-called "charity" are NOT TAX DEDUCTABLE since the organization doing the solicitation is, in fact, a for-profit organization. Tax wise, think of it like this. I am asking you to send money to me so that I can donate to charity. Although your donation is well-meaning, since I am not a recognized non-profit, then YOU don't get the tax deduction...I GET THE TAX DEDUCTION.
You should NEVER, EVER donate to any charity without first checking them out on the internet and then, and then only, make your charitable contributions DIRECTLY to the charity.

G'burg:
That means they collecting for the police department...BUT they're pocketing most of the money! It works like this: They offer an organization...in this case the police department...let's say $10,000 to let them use the org.'s name to raise funds. If they raise $50,000, the organization gets its $10,000. If they raise $500,000, the org. still gets only its $10k.
I got a call from Colorado from a company supposedly raising funds for the Laurel, Maryland boys and girls club. (Yeah, RIGHT...)
If you ever get a call from somebody collecting for a police organization, and you would give if you knew it was a legit call, tell them you'll give them a check if they'll send a uniformed officer around for it. That'll weed out these crooks.

Pleasantly answered the phone. Caller asked to speak to my boss, by his first name. As often is the case, my boss was out of the office, so I offered to take a message for him. Caller seemed agreeable and said "Yes, Brian" *click*. At least he stopped wasting my time quickly, though if that's going to be your response, don't bother calling in the first place.
