The same thing just happened to me.  Got two calls at my place of employment trying to verify that I worked there.  They said they were calling from GMAC.  I too, am in the process of doing a mortgage, but through a different lender.

This also was a hindu sounding person, saying his name was David Patrick.  Second call said his name was Simon.  My lender indicated they are not working with GMAC on my loan at all.

The only thing I can think of is that they are getting the information online; as my original application was done online.

Quick Note:  One of the mortgage companies I applied to online uses GMAC funding.  Interesting enough (or purely coincidental) the person I was dealing with had a very indian sounding accent.  I terminated the application when they asked me for a $500 application fee that would post to my credit card.  None of the other 2 banks that I applied to online asked for that.  I wonder if they are a part of an information selling ring.  Same thing happened to my husband; his information was sold from the Registry of Motor Vehicles in that Stolen ID ring from the late 1980s.

Scammers are always coming up with new and improved ways to rip us off.

Got a call from a Hindu guy from a private number.......stating that he was from GMAC bank and needed to verify my employee history for a refinance loan.  Since I am in the process of getting a home loan I thought it was odd that he said "refinance" and not just a home loan.  I told him I wasn't refinancing my home and he quickly said, "Sorry I meant home loan". He then provided me with my full name and the full name of my co application and said he needed to speak to my employer to verify my employment.
At first I thought the call was legit and I told him I would have to call him back with someone that could verify.  I asked him to give me his name and a number i could reach him at.  He game me the number (800)388-0085 and said his name was Alex Jones (this triggered my suspicion, didn't sound like a hindu name to me).
So i went online and checked out the customer service number for GMAC (which did not match), I gave them a call and told them the whole story.  They told me that it sounded like a fraud call to them, they couldn't identify the phone number belonging to them.
I'm not sure how they get our names and my work number to begin with, pretty creepy.
