First of all, you're responding to a poster from 2012.  Secondly, numbers are often "spoofed" to make it look like a legitimate business is calling.  He's not the one showing his ignorance.

The number is legitimate.  It is USAA asking you to verify some card transaction because they suspect one or more of the transactions may have been due to someone other than you.  For example, I haven't left the state of FL recently but the bank identified. 114.22 transaction made at a store in MA.  Certainly not me!  They didn't approve the transaction as they suspected fraud.  And they are issuing me a new card.  I understand that some people won't call they number back and I understand that as you prefer to communicate with the bank on a phone number if your choosing.  I however did call the number back.  The "system" asked for my zip code and read off 4 card trans.  It then asked me if I made them all to which I indicated I did NOT.  Upon acknowledging that at least 1 trans was not of my doing, only then are you transferred to a person.  This has happened before to me before and if you answer that all trans are legit, the system says sorry for inconvenience and ends without transferring you to a person.

Why post false information on here?  1-800-430-3886 is USAA and you knew that when you posted this - but chose to show your ignorance.

Yes, it is indeed USAA's Fraud prevention department, as confirmed by USAA directly.  I just got called because my normal debit card activity is the same day to day, week to week, month to month; same places, similar amounts for gas, grocery store trips, utilities, mortgage, etc.  However, this morning - I made 3 separate purchases from $16 to $48  from Sam's Club on-line (which shows up as an out of state transaction several states away from my home), a $300+ Dr. Bill in a city about an hor from my home to the south, followed by an almost $2100 payment for furniture I just purchased an hour form my home in the opposite direction to the north of town.  So yes, USAA's Fraud department thought the activity looked suspicious and out of my normal routine.  Because the number I called from (not the one I received the call on) was recognized as one listed on my profile, all I had to do was confirm that I made those 5 transactions - nothing more...no personal details were asked of me to enter.  KUDOS USAA!

Totally legitimate, and I am really happy to confirm the transactions, as it is proof they are paying attention.  None of them were fraudulent but I like the idea that they were questioning them anyway.  USAA is by far the best bank I have ever dealt with.

You can call back the number...they just pull you up in the system automatically and ask you to confirm recent transactions...there is no attempt to solicit information from you.

As the others have said, this is USAA's fraud line for debit cards. Scroll to the bottom of their Contact Us page if you want to see for yourself: https://www.usaa.com/inet/pages/ContactUsBank

Just got a call this evening from them about suspicious activity on my card 1500 miles away. Glad they caught it and glad they have folks working New Years Eve to cancel my card and issue a new one.

The fraud dept is a joke.  They block my card becasue of susupicious activity..supposedly.  Yes, it is Christmas time, and i am making alot of on-line purchases.  Then everytime I call USAA to try to resolve, they insist that they must transfer me to the "FRAUD DEPT" then no one ever picks up and I sit on hold forever....oh, and did I mention that I am paying long distance everytime I call.  Yes, I live overseas.  Sitting on holding 17 minutes and coutning for 3rd attempt as I write this compaint.  RIDICULOUS and seriously considering switching banks because of the hassle it has cuased me in regards to my Christmas shopping pursuits (I have lost several sale items and gifts for my children due to this glitch in their system).

USAA fraud department as others have mentioned - not a scam.  Called me directly after making an online purchase.  On calling them back they ask for your mailing zip code, go over 5 recent purchases that you have to confirm you made.  They don't ask for your card number, SSN, etc.

A valid call... My bank wanted to verify activity on my account. Since I was travelling out of state, I realized I needed to call them. They had me confirm the last 5 transactions were by me.

This is from USAA's fraud dept. Like others here, I didn't believe it at first and called USAA main line and got transferred to fraud and they confirmed it was their number and they had stopped weird activity on my card.

Yep, it's legit. I still chose to call the main usaa number and be transfered to the fraud line. This way I am absolutely sure I am talking to a legit person. I recommend anyone who gets a call form this number still do that just to be sure. They said a flag had been added to my account this morning. They read off a list of charges that had attempted to go through. Thankfully USAA is super fast and blocked all but one small charge that was fraud. They blocked thousand's of dollars (total) worth of stuff from being charged to my account! I love USAA!

This number is from USAA Fraud department.  Someone from San Diego trying to purchase a whole lot of shoes and trying to eat at resturants.  To double check I listened to the voice mail then called the number for USAA posted on their website to be safe.

It's legit, as Emily wrote.  It's one of the phone numbers associated with USAA's Fraud Line.  BUT, as we're warned.  Call USAA at the number YOU TRUST, not the one that shows up on your phone.  Go to the USAA website or look in the wallet card they sent you.

It's legit.  This number is indeed associated with the USAA Fraud Department.  HOWEVER, DO NOT CALL back that number to speak with USAA.  Call the number posted on their website or on that wallet card USAA sent you.  (I'm not including the USAA toll-free number so you don't think I'm giving you a bogus number.)  That number is 800-945-xxxx number.

Same thing. Someone tried to use my card in San Diego. I did hang up and call my bank at the main number as I wanted to make sure the call back was not a scam.

Prank Call
Got a call from this number saying it was my bank and to contact their fraud dept.  I knew right away it wasn't legit as my bank doesn't work that way, but I was curious none-the-less and called them back at the number they left me and it was a sex line.   How stupid?!
