this is the PenFed collections department.

I was mystified why they called, but turns out I was a day late submitting my online credit card bill payment (takes a few days to go through) and it hadn't shown up yet.

the lady was very courteous and I can confirm it is not a scam.

if you get a call from this number and are in doubt, call the main 1-800 listed on their website and ask to speak to the collections department.  it is internal PenFed staff, not an external debt collector as someone else guessed.

yes, it's legit, it is their collections department.

to be safe, you can just give them your first and last name, then have them confirm something like your street number, then give them your address/last four of social etc.  the lady who I spoke to was a bit puzzled why I was so evasive with giving my social right away, but after a few back and forths we worked it out... and overall she was very pleasant.

This is Pentagon Federal Credit Union delinquincy control calling to collect a debt.  If they can't reach their intended recipient then they will call coworkers, neighbors and family members.  In doing so, they have no qualms about giving anyone who answers sensitive and personal information about who they are trying to reach.

I would suggest going to:

https://www.penfed.org/Contact-Us/#phone

and using a phone number on there site. If they actually called you, then they would be aware of the call.  This is the best way to ensure you don't give private information.

In general, you should always look up the bank, hospital, or the contact that was left on the recording to get the actual phone number listed for the institute.

I called 800-451-7269.  The person said it was Pentagon Federal Credit Union  and asked for my social or account number.  I gave them the last 4 and they could not use it.  He wanted my complete SSN or complete Acct#.  I was uncomfortable with this and asked him to verify that he was truly a PFCU person, but told me this was the number for delinquency.  This is where I caught him.  I have NO delinquent accts with PFCU so I told him I would call the number I always call to verify what he was saying.  I called my usual number and told her why I was calling and she said that was a phishing call and that I did the right thing.  She also confirmed that I had NO delinquent accounts.  Report this number!!!!!

Received a call and message from this number.  I called PenFed's regular number and they confirmed it is ther number.  A mix up on PenFed's end but apparently this would be a call regarding a delinquent account as some have mentioned in previous posts.

THIS IS A NUMBER THAT PENTAGON FEDERAL CU USES TO CALL IF YOU'RE DELINQUENT ON A MORTGAGE PAYMENT. I thought I was current with my mortgage payment, but I wasn't, and they called and left me a message.

However, I didn't realized this at first, and I believed all you paranoid people and sent a message to PenFed telling them there was a scam. Here's the official PenFed reply confirming this IS THEIR NUMBER, and also letting me know my payment was past due:

From: PenFed Member Service <info@hq.penfed.org>

Thank you for contacting Pentagon Federal Credit Union.

We apologize for the incorrect information you were given.  The phone number is
a PenFed phone number for our Delinquency Control Center.  Our records show that
you are currently delinquent on your mortgage account.  Please contact our
Delinquency Control Center at 1-800-451-7269.

If you need further assistance, please contact us.

Sincerely,

Thomas Jensen

Summary:  It was a valid call from PFCU, but the point here is that you should NEVER call an unfamiliar number.  Call the company directly.

Details:
Received a robo call from this number stating that I needed to discuss an account. It told me to contact the very same number which was listed on my caller ID, which seemed fishy to to me. I opted to call the published PFCU customer service line instead to clarify if they did indeed call me. They informed me that there was an issue with one of my accounts, which was quickly resolved.

Recieved "robo call" claiming to be from Pentagon Federal Credit Union.  Asked to call 1-800-451-7269 to discuss one of our accounts.

Contacted PFCU, they do not have that number in service.

Interesting!
call from 800-851-7269 [no caller id]
23 Oct 2012

Called PenFed, who transferred me to their Security department.  Security stated they did not contact me nor tried, so I too would suspect the number as a fraud.

Their number just showed up as 800-451-7269 on my caller ID; I firmly believe legitimate businesses don't block their names.  I do not have an account with PenFed, and I have had my phone number for 10 years, so it shouldn't be a legitimate call about a late payment or unusual charge to my non-existant account.  Also, no message left, which is another sign of a scam call.  Just another reason to NEVER give any kind of personal / account information to anyone that calls you - if you have an account with them they will already have your information.

I have never heard of PenFed, therefore do not have an account with them, yet they called my cell. I did not answer, so I have no details of the call.

I called back and only gave my account information (not my social security number).  They looked up my account and rightly identified a late payment for an auto loan, and confirming my personal information.  They did not ask to take payment, just identified it for their records.  Completely legitimate.

THIS IS MY BANK - PENTAGON FEDERAL CREDIT UNIT (PFCU) (www.penfed.org).

It's their credit card department. They call when there is suspicious charge or you forget to pay your bill.
I know. They call me when I buy something really extravagant (which is really, really rare) and when my wife forgets to pay her "online card", which is not so rare.

They are also listed here: http://creditboards.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=213762

The Rant: My wife's routine is to open bills and then proceed to fold them back up and put them back in the envelope, where they are subsequently forgotten. We have $250,000 cash in their bank and I just got a call to pay her $249 credit card bill that's overdue.

rec'd call from 1-800-451-7269 at 7:10pm.  Man used my name then garbled his name when he asked me to call the number back.  I've never heard of the Pentagon Federal Credit Union. Possibly a collection agency.

I called this number, and it sounded legit, although I cannot confirm if it is.  I spoke to Mr Goodman, who said he worked in the collections department at Pentagon Federal Credit Union on Eisenhower Drive in Alexandria.  Is this a PFCU number or not?

Is this a PFCU number or the number being used by a collection agency in Eugene Oregon representing PFCU? When you call the number do speak to a PFCU employee or to an employee of a collection agency such as Professional Credit Services or Credit Services of Oregon?

I received a voice mail from 703-317-3700 that it's Pentagon Credit Union asking me to call back at this 800 number.  I called the number on back of my credit card and the lady confirmed that they called me.  The caller ID showed up 703 area code because their office is in Virginia which uses 703 area code.  So this number is okay, but I would still use the number on back of my credit card in the future just in case.

This is a valid PFCU number. It is from their collection department. I'm not sure why they have you call back the 800 number (probably because its toll-free).

I get a call from them every time my wife forgets to pay her credit card bill, which is more often than it should be. We have $200,000 in their bank and she forgets to pay the bill. Interest and late fees. She's such an idiot.

We receive automated messages from 8004517269 everyday, purporting to be PFCU since we moved and got a new home phone number.  I called back and, sure enough, they are trying to reach another member who once had this phone number.

It is NOT a scam.  800-451-7269  left a VM on my phone.  If you call PFCU (800-247-5626) and give them the 800-451-7269 number, they will read to you (word for word) the recorded voicemail message that was probably left on your phone.  It sounds strange but it's legit.

ONCE AND FOR ALL...THIS IS 100% legit. Don't believe the previous posts claiming otherwise.

I received a voicemail on 4/9/10. In my case, my bank's bill-payment system did not submit the PenFed Visa payment correctly. This number is the collections department at PenFed.

It's just unfortunate they leave a scammy-sounding voicemail message instead of having a real human contact customers.

Received a call from this number at my home phone, called PenFed direct number they verified it is their department that handles their credit cards, in specific, when the account is delinquent.  I also checked my cell phone and found I had this number saved under PenFed Credit Cards.  Hope this helps clear up the mystery.  If all else fails, call the main number 1-800-247-5626; they will check your accounts and determine if any are delinquent.  They are very prompt to call even when a payment has been made but doesn't cover the entire amount due; as was our case that I hadn't updated our automatic payment to take into account a $41 increase in the minimum due.

This number is NOT a fraud.  It is the delinquent payments branch.  I called PFCU Member Svcs and they confirmed it was one of their numbers.  I called the suspicious number and they said it was a glitch in their system that reported my credit past due by 31 days (falsely).  I then asked her to provide me some information from my current account and she got the current balance correct down to the penny.

Not that it's evidence by itself, but should be considered supporting data, that the automated phone system is the same as the PFCU Member Svcs number including the same woman's voice and enough options same/different to be convincing.
