Has anyone checked into them through the Better Business Bureau?

Debt Collector
I just received a very threatening letter from DP and Associates today as well. I have never received any calls from them but the call back number on the letterhead is 800-475-3430. They claim I have ignored their previous attempts to resolve this matter. I have NEVER heard of them before. This is the first time I have received anything at all from them and I know I do not owe $14,000 to any debt collector. I googled the address listed at the top of the letterhead and did not find a business called DP and Associates. All I came up with was individuals like it's a residential address. Maybe a big apartment complex or something.

Debt Collector
I just got the same letter, and talked to a guy on the phone. He had my original credit debt account number, and said that they now own the debt.

I was originally freaked out, they want $1200 for a deb that I believed I had paid off in 2008, but they guy on the phone (very calmly) explained that unless I have the letter from the credit company saying I have a $0 balance, I can't prove it was paid, and I'm liable for the $1200. i can take care of it now, or go on record as disputing it, and it will go to court.

After calming down, I started researching...I called the original credit company and they said they had sold my "debt" (again, what debit, I paid it off??), to Unifund.  So I google unifund and give them a call. I get caught in an endless cycle of "we don't actually want to talk to you" press this and press that, and hold for the next agent and then get disconnected. sigh.

Ok, so then i start researching Unifund and THEY don't look like such nice folks either.

Now I'm at a loss...who the heck is DP an Associates? How did they get involved? Are they legit? How did they know my credit card number from 2008?  Do I pay them?  Do I ignore them?  If I ignore them, and they are legit, then it WILL go to court, yes?

any thoughts out there?

Call back number on letterhead of "DP and Associates" who sent a very dubious letter threatening legal action if I didn't settle a debt they claimed I owed.  Seems to be a snail mail version of phishing.
