TL;DR version - Legitimate, but manipulative

Unfortunately, I have to disagree with the scam claims.  Under no circumstances would I ever accept what these people offer (because you should deal with Verizon directly), but they are hired by Verizon.

Basically, Verizon outsources certain 3rd parties to make calls on their behalf.  This particular company called me today telling me one of our accounts (we have dozens of accounts) was due a credit and was on 3 year terms.  She wanted me to move to 2 year terms and we'd get a credit.

What she didn't tell me was the offer was tied to significantly higher monthly bills.  We are grandfathered in with our current plans and she was attempting to manipulate us out of those and hit us with additional charges for added internet service (which she neglected to mention).

We receive scam calls on a regular basis, so I know the routine.  After cornering the rep into proving she wasn't with Verizon and was a 3rd party, I hung up and reported the call to our Verizon reps.

They informed me that these calls are legitimate because they are attempting to get customers to upgrade their accounts.  This particular call was triggered because of an increase in internet speed which was now available at this particular account's address.  I didn't want to upgrade, because it's not necessary for this location, and the net result would be an increase of about $200/month, but we would get a credit ($50, 1 time).

As a consumer, you should know what you need and what you don't need as service at a location, don't let this type of caller bully you.  If you need to make a change, call Verizon directly.

As for some advice, here are the steps to stop from being scammed:

Step 1:
Ask if they can provide the ACCOUNT (not phone) number.  Have a bill in your hands to verify it as well, because they may attempt to make it up.

Result:
If they can't, they DO NOT work for directly Verizon.  If they do verify, it is possible they found a bill and are trying to scam you.  This same verification works for nearly any other ISP or service provider.  If they are with your ISP/Provider and are calling you, they know all of your information (minus passwords/certain pins).

Step 2:
Have them validate the address, your name, SPOC (if it's a business account), the billing address and the service address.  Have them validate your last 3 months of payment (longer if you're really paranoid).

Result:
If they can't, hang up.  If they can, it may be legit.  We have actually received legit calls from Verizon in the past, and they are the only ones that can validate everything in Step 1 and Step 2.

Step 3:
If you're still uneasy, or you've been scammed/manipulated, hangup and call directly in to Verizon.  They know your account and can explain so much more than some 3rd party with limited information.

Hope this helps!

These people are total scammers and are rude!
The most rude and pushy woman said she is from Verizon and dealing with billing. When I said the owner is not here and if she wanted to leave a message, she said that our Verizon account needs an update and something is expiring very soon which is NOT true.  She didn't want to leave a number to call back!  Finally after a month of everyday calling with the same situation, she started yelling at me!!! and then she finally got me this number, she said owner can leave a message there and she will call him back.  When I called that number 1-800-497-1209 that she gave me, a machine picked up and the company name wasn't Verizon. They are some company, that you can't even hear a name, coz they said it too fast and claimed to be "Verizon agents". So it's obviously a scam! If you do a research in Internet they've been calling and scamming people for years from different numbers! You agree for an update and you think they give you a discount for services and you will pay cheaper, you will end up paying a double you pay now. So just to make sure I called Verizon and they do NOT know anything about them!
So this rude woman called again today and I told her that owner said he's gonna be dealing with actual Verizon himself and not them! That they are not Verizon! She YELLED AT ME!!!! She yelled: "what do you mean I am not from Verizon? I am handling billing for Verizon!"  I told her again, that owner is gonna be dealing with Actual Verizon himself, and not them. I told her "we both know, you are not verizon!" So she yelled at me again and hung up on me!
Do NOT WAIST YOUR TIME ON THEM! They will tell you, you will pay cheaper if you update an account! But it's not true! Just tell them you gonna call verizon yourself directly!

Tony Trail said she was from Verizon and told us that we could continue with our landline only if we upgraded to a bundle that included internet. Without our permission Tony Trail placed an order for the bundle. Fortunately Verizon cancelled the order when we called.

Received a message saying our billing number was due a large number of credits.  Since they did not mention our company name, only billing number, I figured it must be a scam.  When I googled it, I came across this site.  We haven't had Verizon in years!

For the record, the number on my display from where they called is: 213-457-4056, and the callers name is Natasha.

Claimed to be from Verizon, but gave this number for a callback.  Threw out some random number for a MRC if we switched back.  Do not call or order from them!

I got the same thing...Caller stated she was from Verizon and that we had a huge credit for lines that had formerly been on Verizon. And that we could get that credit only by switching back to Verizon.

Calling the number gives a recording: "Thank you for calling Calforce(?) an authorized sales agent of Verizon.....
