Hi Everyone,

I got the automated call this morning from 800-503-1969 and they gave me a 6 digit PIN.  I looked online and it appears that this is a scam BUT I called Citibank directly and spoke with their fraud department.  They transferred me to a customer service rep in Florida (one of their call centers) and they wanted to tell me that my credit line has been reduced.  They confirmed that they use several call centers to make calls and I learned that they do this regularly - March, October.  This is not a scam.  If you are concerned, you should call Citibank directly like I did.

Be careful always.

- the scammers WANT you to think that the phone number is real . . . so, they'll use this very same venue to attempt to legitimize their number.

Here are some choices -

1.  Ignore the call.  If it really is Citicorp, they'll call you back and advise you of consequences if they do not hear from you in a certain amount of time.   But - since this ISN'T Citi - you wont see any action taken.

2. Call the 800 number for Citi corp - - - dont call the number that these morons told you to call - but DO call the 800 number on the back of your card or statement.  Ask them if there's any reason that they needed to get ahold of you.  The answer will be "No".

3.  After you've satisfied yourself that these people are scammers.  Do as I suggest above. (if you have the time and the inclination) and WASTE WASTE WASTE their time and effort to the best of your ability !!  But remember - - - - NEVER, EVER, NEVER give them anything legit.

Good luck all !!!

This isn't a legit inquiry from Citi Corp.

Evidence - ANI digits (the number you see when they call you) do not relate to any valid Citi Corp phone number AND the caller-ID (The name displayed when your phone is ringing) displayed does not say "Citicorp"  - -

ALSO -  ANI digits and the number they ask you to call back to - are DIFFERENT !!!!!!!!!
(Can you spell   S-C-A-M ?????)

So - I encourage you to call them back - enter your ID number just as they tell you to do  - and talk to them as long as you can. . . . . but, ALWAYS stop short of giving them ANY personal information.  Act confused . . . .  make numbers up if you want . . . . give them an account number and blunder the digits . . when they ask for clarification - give them something else.  Talk about your med's that you should have taken. . . . do everything you can to WASTE THEIR TIME ! ! ! ! ! ! !

This is a legitimate call from CITI to inform you of changes in the terms of your CITI credit card agreement...

CITI is in financial trouble and they are in the process of changing revolving credit accounts in their favor... just like Chase and the rest of them... consumer credit scores be damned...

This call is a real call from citi telling you about changes to your credit card.  The call wants you to call back and they give you a PIN number to use.   I didn't call back but I checked my account on line and the same day I got the call it also had a message on my account that they had lowered my credit limit in half.   They had already upped the interest rate on the account.  I was in the process of paying them off.   Credit cards are in a hurry to change everything before the new law changes.   I have always paid the credit card on time and always more than what was due.  They are screwing the good credit people.  Soon as I finish paying them off they won't be getting anymore of my money.

I called the number on the back of my Citi Mastercard the Citibank representative verified that 800-503-1969 is in fact a department within Citibank.  They even transferred me to them, and I didn't have to give them my account information, they pulled it up within the call transfer.  The reason they are calling is to say that "there has been a change in account status."  In my case it meant that they were lowering my credit line, which I think is pretty normal with all of the financial turmoil that's happening in the system.

The number returns to Citibank Card Services. You'll have to enter the "PIN Code" they left for you. The "additional verification" needed (in my case, anyway) was the ZIP code of the billing address. I never had to enter the account number or any other info. At the end of the call, the system recited the accurate account balance.

I think they're using this system to avoid having to deal with pissed-off customers, as they close or reduce credit lines. Almost every card I have has either been closed or reduced in the past six months, and I'm always current on my balances or have paid in full. Now the card companies are citing my increased debt-to-limit ratio, which they themselves have caused by closing or limiting my lines... crazy.

I'm better off without the cards anyway... they'll all be paid off soon and I won't have to deal with them again.

Got a voicemail from this number, stating that it's Citi Cards and that I needed to call back with a six-digit code or my card would have difficulty being used.  Very odd, because I'm up to date with payments and no payment is due.  When I called, they couldn't find my records by name, address, or phone number, so they kept asking for my account number.  I wouldn't give it to them - I've had this card for eight years!  The whole thing just seemed strange.

Left message stating it was CitiCards with a change to my account. Included "message ID#" for call back. When I called back, it still asked for more verification information, so I hung up. Sounds like a total phishing scam.

I got an automated call that said that I had a "change to my status" on my CITI card and that I needed to call back 800-503-1969 to provide code "506560".  This is NOT the number for my card's customer service.
When I called back, it was an automated system again asking for the code above and indicated that "additional verification was needed".  That's when I got suspicious and called CITI directly to see if this was legitimate or not.

Per CITI, this is a legitimate attempt to reach their customer.
The person I talked to didn't understand why it seemed like a phishing scam.

Yep, same here... decreased limit.  I also opted out of their new terms of service last month.  I wonder if that's a coincidence.  It's fine cause come January, I'm living as a hermit to get rid of all credit debt.

They call twice some days and never leave a message. If it is "Citibank" as other comments suggest it is not good business ethics.

It left a message that was cut off at the beginning urging me to call back with a PIN number and claiming to be from Citi. I have a Citi card, but did not recognize the number and I did not call back. Checked my Citi account online today, and noticed that my credit line was decreased by $500. I've been with a customer with these a$$holes since 1999, have never made a late payment, but they advised me several months ago that they were planning to increase everyone's APR to 24.99% unless you agreed to have your account closed at the end of your card expiration date. My card is set to expire by the end of the month, so I'm guessing that's why they've decided to max out my credit limit. It would have been more prudent of them to notify me in writing rather than leaving a sketchy voicemail message on my cell phone.

Whoever the people are in this post saying this is a legit phone number are scammers.  I got this same call from this same number - problem is I don't have a CREDIT card with Citibank.  I only have a DEBIT card with my checking account.  It is not possible to reduce the CREDIT LINE on a debit card.  While debit cards do have usage limits, a bank would NEVER call this a credit line.  I know because I used to work at one.

Respond to these phone calls at your own detriment.

OMG!  I decided to call Citibank back to see if my credit limit had been lowered recently, and it was lowered this morning!  I've never been late and they lowered my limit from $23,600 to $7,580!!!!  They said its because I was late on a payment to another creditor!  WTF!  My house has been in escrow since April 2010 and my bank has not been responding to the short sale request because I was paying on time..... when I got injured and had medical bills to pay, I had to make a decision - medical bills or mortgage payment - and I chose medical bills because the bank had been jerking me around.... this whole financial mess is a mindf#$*!!!   You're damned if you do and you're damned if you dont.

I got a call from 888-302-9291 and the automated voice ID'd as "City", and told me something has changed on my City account and I need to call 800-503-1969 and reference a 6 digit PIN# to discuss my account.  I called the number and the automated system asked for my PIN# and my billing zip code, but I only gave them the PIN#.  After it asked me for my zip a couple times, it finally hung up on me because I would not respond (I was hoping I'd get transferred to a live person).  After I got hung up on, I called called Citibank and I asked them if they called me.  They didnt have any record of calling me, but they pulled up my 2 credit cards and confirmed that 1 was closed last week because I did not agree to the new terms they sent me about a year ago in the mail (they wanted to raise my APR from 2.9% to 9.9%, so I opted out and mailed it back).   So who really knows if the 800-503-1969 number belongs to Citibank.....  they didnt have record of a phone call to me.... still seems suspicious.
