Prank Call
Almost exact same thing happened to me. I had a problem that Iolo tech claimed he couldn't fix. This was a simple problem where System restore was being deleted. I believe this was a problem Iolo tech created. He told me he had to send this to the next level in California for analysis and they would get back to me. I got caught because I was expecting a call back from Iolo. The next day I got a call from a magic Jack phone claiming that my Sys Mechanic had not updated in 3 days, and had to be checked. He used Supremo to connect and told me I didn't have to call Iolo again and he would be my own personal tech from now on. He went into registry and Event View and show me many errors that could only be fixed by rebuilding the registry, and he had to buy a license to do this. which cost $199. They spent all day doing something I don't know what and claimed that they where rebuilding registry, and repairing. Computer worked ok after this, but my important bookmarks were deleted intentionally. They also installed unlicensed Sys Mech Pro on my computer as a bonus which caused a lot of problems and that had to be uninstalled. They way I found out they were a scam is when my tech took day off and I called Iolo and they denied having anything to do with them (lie). This was defiantly an inside job. NEVER deal with Iolo. Their technicians are inferior and can't be trusted, nor can Sys Mech. NEVER deal with bogus indian scum in foreign countries where you have no recourse.

I live in Puerto Rico and got a call from them too. They identified themselves as Iolo representatives. I was in my PC at the time and this guy got absolute control of it. He showed me all kinds of screens I never seen before. This guy had a very strong Hindu accent. After 15 min. or so he told said that my PC has 54k errors and that he could fix them for me for the rest of my life for just $199.00. That's when I stopped the conversation.

I've twice received these calls. The accent is Indian or Middle Eastern. Sadly, when I reported it to Iolo they took NINE DAYS to respond, at which time they said it was bogus and nobody would ever call for something like that. I just got the second bogus call and I'll post the result if and when Iolo responds. Pretty amazing that a tech company would take NINE DAYS to react to a serious threat to their customer base.

This just happened to me. A total scam. They also use the SKYPE phone number 661-748-0240.  As a System Mechanic user I trusted the caller and allowed access. Luckily I stopped them short of allowing their costly "fix". Today I had GeekSquad (Excellent outfit!) totally clean out my computer and changed my passwords. I dodged a bullet. DO NOT TRUST these other callers. They are hackers and liars.

"Ricky" called from this number, claiming to be calling from "System Mechanic," regarding information they had received through the program about viruses on my computer.  I played along just long enough to see if I could tell what he was after. He had me open Event Viewer on my computer, but I did not give him any information.  When asked he identified himself only as from System Mechanic and repeated the 800 number as a callback.  System Mechanic is an Iolo product, and I reported the scam to them.

I googled the number that called me with a guy asking me to allow him remote access to my computer.  I smelled a scam.  Below is one of many google results I got - all of them saying it is a scam number.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What is phone number (661) 748 0240?

Phone number 6617480240 is a default phone number for Skype users.

(661) 748 0240 appears on outbound calls for Skype users who have not set up their Skype caller ID yet and is also utilized by cyber criminals to promote malware and iniatate other scams.

They called me a couple days ago, saying they had received an error message from my System Mechanic software.  The guy also asked me to go to the Iolo showmypc site.  This set off alarms immediately.  I don't care if this IS legit, which I seriously doubt.  There is no way I'm allowing someone remote access to my computer remotely.  I have a feeling that an employee or ex-employee of System Mechanic got access to their customer database and sold it or is involved in something fishy.

If these calls are legit then this company is not smart - though the hackers are clever.  Even my 70 year old mother who is very new to the internet, got a similar call recently and smelled a scam.  Just as your bank wouldn't call and ask for your password, this doesn't make sense.  If they can get an "error" message remotely, then they should have the capability to send you a message informing you that you need to call THEM.  I suspect that the one poster whose computer is now running "too fast" has probably had a lot of space freed up by all the memory that was remotely dumped.  Or quite possibly he is someone involved in the scam.

Based upon your very poor grammar which matches the equally poor grammar of the callers you are also one of the scammers and most certainly your name is not Peter. Anyone named Peter would know how to properly form an English sentence.

This poster is a shill.  It is obvious that English is not his first language (most likely an Indian scammer).  So I will speak to him in his native tongue (Hindi).

Hey kutte ka aulad, how is life treating you in the boiler room?  You are nothing but a soower ke bachche and a ullu ke pathe.  If you shill here again, I will send you a hamburger.

You mean they have laptops in your boiler room?  Seriously, these "repair" people are simply criminals trying to get access to your computer system (they ain't bright enough to drop a key logger on anyone), get your money, and your personal information.

And they certainly did not fix the above poster's shill virus

Hooooweee!  The computers are only fast as the operator and the computers processor folks!  Legitimate company's have no way of knowing if your infected with a virus!  They do not cold call you from i'mascammer, siberia. Their goal is to access your computer, get any info (which should never be left on it period regardless) and fraud you for your money!

Keep your antivirus up to date and run it! If you have a problem, take it your personal tech in person.. face to face!  Never ever allow remote access to your computer!

I also received a call from the number with the same guy you mentioned "David". But he is a genius, my computer is 7 years old, but then also he fixed my computer. You should be ashamed "Dig Daddy". After the work was done they again called me and advice me to increase my computer's RAM.
I consulted a local computer engineer about the RAM one, he also advised me the same.
I'm satisfied with the work.

You are a lying shill for these scammers or one of the scammers yourself. It is impossible for them to know in advance that you have a problem on your computer. Anyone who calls claiming to be receiving error messages, virus alerts or anything else from your computer is a liar and a scammer.  Anyone who calls claiming to be with "Windows" or associated with Microsoft or that they received information from Microsoft about problems with your computer is a liar and scammer.  See the posting on Microsoft's web site about this scam.
