This number calls several times, everytime I answer there is no one there.  I even waited on the line for several minutes to see if they hang up or something yet the line remains "live" until i disconnect

I've been getting calls from this number as well.  I just pick up and immediately hang up again.  I'm hoping they eventually get the hint that I'm not interested.

Just got a call from this number, but didn't answer. From the responses above, I looked up the website of the ND Fraternal Order of Police, and on their FAQ page at teh bottom it states:

"The National Fraternal Order of Police does not conduct telephone solicitations. However, ND State Lodge does solicit donations and some local FOP lodges do. If you have a question about a telephone call you received requesting that you make a donation to the FOP, Please contact the ND State Lodge at (701) 320-0240 or send an email by clicking here."

800-526-0276 has been calling 2-3 times a day for weeks! Very annoying, I've certainly got better things to be doing then run to answer the phone to this robot.  NO ONE answers when I pickup, so I can tell them off! If a charity, I certainly will not donated to anyone using this NAG SERVICE!

Another one of those "there is no problem now with your credit account, but..." scam calls. Their message asks you to dial a "1" if you want to be removed from their call list, but we all know what REALLY happens when you dial ANYTHING on these calls...! :(

I would guess the scammers are smart enough to know the legit charity they are trying to represent. Thus they look to see if there is local charity number and address they can refer to in the call.  I would first call the 701-320-0240 number and explain to them that you are getting calls from a 800 number who is representing themselves as their charity and confirm or deny if they use a telemarking company and if they do which company do they use and from what number do they call.

This number was calling me repeatedly and would always hang up.  I would try to call back and there would be no answer.  I reported the number to the "do not call" list several times and it actually quit calling for a while.  It called back today for the first time in a while and I answered and someone was actually on the other end.

He said he was collecting for the North Dakota Fraternal Order of Police.  Not sure if this is true or not.  He gave me his sales pitch and asked me for a donation.

I said "Well, I would have considered it if this number hadn't been calling me and repeatedly hanging up on me.  For this reason I will NOT be making a donation, and you can take me off your call list."  Of course he rudely hung up on me.  Typical reaction.

However, he did give me the phone number and address of the Police Order before he hung up.

Not sure if he really represented them or not.

But the # and address is:

701-320-0240

PO Box 1993
Bismarck, ND 58502

If I get another call, this is the number I am calling back to complain, or this is the address that a nasty letter will be written to.

Feel free to do the same if this 800 number keeps calling you.

There should be legislation that stops anyone from calling and stops the charity and political calls also.

I get these calls all the time and so does my 84 year old mother.

I have the same number call me on a regular basis.

I wouldn't be surprised if the company that makes the call is connected with one of the reverse number look up websites that pop up when you do a google search on the number.  How to prove it, who knows, but it could simply be another way for a website to get someone to click on their site.  It would be nice to find a way to track them down.

I work for a global phone company, but not the one that serves my residence.  I will do some digging and see what I can find out about these people and report back if I find anything.

Joe.

Well after comments from other blog sites that report boggess 800 telephone number scams, I thought I would post a message and tell you that they have struck in Montana (where I'm at) Iowa and Nebraska.  Looks like they are after the northwestern states.  Many of them stated that the caller is with a childs charity, we are told they are collecting for the "faternal order of police".   When I tell them my numbers have all been listed as "do not call", their excuse is that they are a charity and the "do not call" law does not affect them.  This really sucks because they are the biggest pain in the *^*%#@ and biggest illegal telemarket abuser I've ever experienced!

We just got a call from this number also.  It was a plesent sounding guy which stated that he was from the police department and wanted to talk to me husband.  When I stated that he was not home he hung up.  I called back to see what was going on it just rang and rang and nobody answered.  Then an answering machine message came on and had a message like cell phones before you set them up.

Why hello there internet tough guy. :-)

I'll provide answers and sources for your points:

1. That asking to be put on a DNC list is frivolous.

When you ask to be put on a DNC list, the telemarketing company or business/charity/non-profit is required by law to comply with your request. If they do not, they may face charges up to $16,000.
Source: See points 28 and 29 here http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt107.shtm

2. That telemarketing to cellular phones is illegal.

This one's a little trickier. It appears that it is illegal to call cell phones from automated dialers. (See point 10 http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt107.shtm) But, if an entity is not using an automatic dialer there does not appear to be an issue with dialing cell phones. It also appears that a special loophole may exist for charities/non-profits/political organizations/surveyors as far as calling cell phones. It is not said explicitly, but because the aforementioned are not restricted by the National DNC, (see point 28 at the above link), the cell phone rules might not apply. It's a gray area, but I assume most non-profits/charities etc. don't go out of their way to acquire cell phone numbers to call.

3. That the government will send telemarketers the numbers on the DO NOT CALL LIST so they can call people on the the DO NOT CALL LIST.

Ok, your turn. Sources? The "government" (FTC) does provide the DNC list to telemarketers to enforce the list. (http://www.ftc.gov/ftc/privacy.shtm) If they didn't how would the telemarketing companies be able to cross reference their databases with the DNC to remove freshly added numbers? Abuses almost certainly happen, but once found out I'm sure you can imagine the penalties would be stiff and swift.

I took the time to google up the website for the North Dakota Fraternal Order of Police. Here it is: www.ndfop.org Looks above board to me.

I'd be happy to look up more sources on this issue if you feel that there's need to. I hope this sheds some light on the situation for you like it did for me. Thank you for the prompting to back up my assertions, Hal. :-)

Got a call from this number yesterday. They asked for my husband and when I told them he was unavailable, they then started talking to me. I live in North Dakota. Said they were from the Fraternal Order of Police located in Fargo, ND. They were asking for donations to keep their education of children going. Like keeping kids off meth and not talking to strangers. They wanted me to provide bank account information for my donation. I told him I was not interested but they said they were still going to send me some information.

If you don't like getting calls, answer the phone and tell whomever it is to put you on their do not call list. If they do not comply, they will be in deep doo doo with the Attorney General.

Yeah right!  what fantasy world do you live in"?  You can ask/demand to be
put on their do not call list all you want,  see how that works for ya,  and just try to get the Attorney General to do anything, good luck.

It is not legal to cold call cell phone numbers or any numbers, where did you get your information from?  Sources?

If you aren't on the national do not call list don't get on it.
We were getting just a few of these sleezebag calls a week so we put
our number on the DoNotCall list.  Now we get several a day,  they get
the numbers from the do not call list,  the government will actually
send them the list if they request it.  And you idiots want the government
in charge of your health care insurance.

It's also completely legal for them to call a cell phone, it just doesn't happen as much, which might account for the erroneous assertion that it is illegal.

Seriously, it totally sucks getting a million calls a day, especially when you answer and no one is there for like 10 seconds. I always wait to get a real person and then tell them to take me off their calling list.

They have been calling for months.  I picked up an in coming call on my garage phone. And they asked for me by name. Stupidly I confirmed it.  Then they hung up.  I got back into the house and saw it was these a holes that had called.  They are up to no good.  But call their 800 number as many times as you can. I costs them money each time someone calls them.
