I received a call from TLC asking me to get in touch with my neighbor (giving me her name and address) so I can tell her to call them!! Unbelievable gall - I have an unlisted address and am on the do-not-call list. It bothers me that 1) they have access to information that has my address attached to my phone number and 2) they think I'm going to approach a stranger and pass on a message like this and 3) they let me know my neighbor has debt issues. I'm reporting them to the FTC and the local attorney general.

It is indeed a collection agency. They called me about a 5-year-old phone bill. They are pushy, but apparently legit.

A few months ago Mr. Franklin (1 800 557-7416) kept calling and calling, probably 6 weeks straight worth of calls. I told him to send me proof that I owed money and I would look over the papers. He never sent anything and quit calling. Today all of a sudden a Ms. Washington from this number calls. She left messages on my cell and my office phone. I called and I barely got that they were a company called TLC. Then all of a sudden they were "transfering the call". Needless to say I hung up. I owe no one, so who they heck are these people??

This is a collection agency from a payday loan company. I have talked to a Mr. Franklin and Ms. Stephens in the past. I have taked out some payday loans that might not have been fully paid back. I asked for verfication for the loan and to who it was through, they e-mailed me so document that really didn't say anything except that I owed "X" amount. I was going to try and work out payments but they are hard to work with,. Then I heard that our state Attorney General said there was some identity theft from some of these payday loan companies and some phone calls may not be valid. I don't know what to do next????????

I have been getting these calls looking for a relative and to call back.  The caller ID on my home phone showed 954.  They are now calling my work, so I called them back and found out they were a collection agency.  I am not behind in my bills and would like to know who to contact to get them to stop!!!

TLC called a family member stating they wanted a reference in regards to me.

If this is a collection agency, then it was illegal for this company to state they were calling for a reference, which was not true.

the are calling and harassing me at work.  when i tried to get a name, Mr. Franklin, would not give me his first name or a phone number to access him.  He started getting nasty when I would ask him for information about his company, said he worked for the company I had previously owed money to.  The debt was written off last summer and I have proof of it.  I heard that scam companies are trying to get money from unsuspecting people.

Industry Tips

Debt Collection

The following is more detailed information about the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act:

HOW MAY A DEBT COLLECTOR CONTACT YOU?

A collector may contact you in person, by mail, telephone, telegram, or FAX. However, a debt collector may not contact you before 8:00 a.m. and after 9:00 p.m. unless you agree. A debt collector may not contact you at work if the collector knows your employer disapproves.

CAN YOU STOP A DEBT COLLECTOR FROM CONTACTING YOU?

You may stop a collector from contacting you by writing a letter to the collection agency telling them to stop. Once the agency receives your letter, it may not contact you again except to say there will be no further contact. Another exception is that the agency may notify you if the debt collector or creditor intends to take a specific action.

MAY A DEBT COLLECTOR CONTACT A THIRD PARTY ABOUT YOUR DEBT?

If you have an attorney, the debt collector may not contact anyone other than your attorney. If you do not have an attorney, a collector may contact other people, but only to find out where you live and work. Collectors are usually prohibited from contacting such permissible parties more than once. In most cases, the collector cannot tell anyone other that you or your attorney that you owe money.

WHAT IS THE COLLECTOR REQUIRED TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE DEBT?

Within five days after you are first contacted, the collector must send you a written notice telling you the amount of money you owe; the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money; and what action to take if you believe you do not owe the money.

MAY A DEBT COLLECTOR CONTINUE TO CONTACT YOU IF YOU BELIEVE YOU DO NOT OWE MONEY?

A collector may not contact you if, within 30 days after you are first contacted, you send the collection agency a letter stating you do not owe money. However, a collector can renew collection activities if you are sent proof of the debt, such as a copy of a bill for the amount owed.

WHAT TYPES OF DEBT COLLECTION PRACTICES ARE PROHIBITED?

* Use of threats of violence or harm against the person, property, or reputation;

* Publishing of a list of consumers who refuse to pay their debts (except to a credit bureau);

* Use of obscene or profane language;

* Repeated use of the telephone to annoy someone;

* Telephoning of people without identifying themselves;

* Advertising your debt.

Debt collectors may not use false statements when collecting a debt. For example, they cannot:

* Falsely imply that they are attorneys or government representatives;

* Falsely imply that you have committed a crime;

* Falsely represent that they operate or work for a credit bureau;

* Misrepresent the amount of your debt;

* Misrepresent the involvement of an attorney in collecting a debt;

* Indicate that papers being sent to you are not legal forms when they are.

Debt collectors may also not state that:

* You will be arrested if you do not pay your debt;

* They will seize, garnish, attach, or sell your property or wages, unless the collection agency or creditor intends to do so, and it is legal to do so;

* Actions, such as a lawsuit, will be taken against you, which legally may not be taken, or which they do not intend to take.

Debt collectors may not:

* Give false credit information about you to anyone;

* Send you anything that looks like an official document from a court or government agency when it is not;

* Use a false name.

Debt collectors may not engage in unfair practices in attempting to collect a debt. For example, they may not:

* Collect any amount greater than your debt, unless allowed by law;

* Deposit a post-dated check prematurely;

* Take or threaten to take your property unless this can be done legally;

* Contact you by postcard.

WHAT CAN YOU DO IF YOU BELIEVE A DEBT COLLECTOR VIOLATED A LAW?

You have the right to sue a collector in state or federal court within one year from the date you believe the law was violated. If you win, you may recover money for damages you suffered. Court costs and attorney's fees also can be recovered. A group of people may also sue a debt collector and recover money for damages up to $500,000, or one percent of the collector's net worth, whichever is less.

received a call from this number, Mr. Franklin.  He called me at work and said that he needed to speak with me before he contacts my human resource department.

It is illegal for a bill collector to contact an employer unless they have a court order to have income withheld.  I do not even owe money to this company.

Annoying.

Getting  messages from this place every few days.  Sometimes, a really pissed off lady says I need to call her back.  I have not since I know of no reason, since I am not behind on any of my bills.  It does sound like it would be a bill collector or collection agency, though.
