What I find odd is that this number comes up without the 800 in front.

My son has not taken the ACT or signed up for anything yet.

Good information from those who answered the phone, I see it is a toll free and won't answer.

Yes, I got a call similar to above.  They told me my son signed up to get info about the program.  When I asked where he would have signed up, she said at school.  The woman on the phone was very smooth, recited all kinds of statistics and success rates for the program, ensuring me they wanted to help kids do well and get into good colleges.  When she asked for my credit card #, I said I would have to call them back or order the program on line.  They said this was a special deal, the 10CDs for $175 and that if I ordered on line it would cost me $225. At that point, I said no thanks.

Same as above.  Asked for my son's parent and then went into a spiel about how their 10 cd set could raise his SAT/ACT scores 200 points (SAT) and 4 points (ACT).  Asked if my son had recently taken either test and what his score was.
Asked to put me on hold, then left me on hold for over 20 minutes.

Tried to call the number back on just got a stutter dial tone.

Call came in on this number, from an obvious scam artist / boiler room.  Asked for a parent of the child who had expressed interest in taking the SAT.  Said he was from Scholarship Fund America, but fumbled the name.  By spending $159 for a 4 DVD set, they could guarantee an improvement of 200 points in the SAT score.  I had recently signed up my daughter for an SAT subject test, so they must be getting/stealing the data from the College Board.  If not happy with the results, I could send them back for a refund.
So I asked if they could send me an offer in the mail that I could respond to, he chuckled and said "No, we don't do that" and hung up.  We never got to the part where he would ask for the credit card number.
