Funny you mention that.  I had a guy show up at my front door last week.  He said he was a medical professional, and that he detected that I was suffering from Malaria.  I was amazed at his intuition!  Then he pulled a bottle of pills out of his pocket, and said that if I downed the whole bottle (which he would gladly sell me for the bargain-basement price of $599.99), I would be cured!  I couldn't pass up such a deal, so I immediately gave him a blank signed check, and just told him to fill in the amount.  In fact, I was so grateful that I also handed him my VISA, MasterCard and American Express cards and told him to buy himself a nice steak dinner, a bottle of Dom Perringnon and a complete home theater system.  I'm so glad Charlie Sheen came to my house!  :-)

Whatever you do, DO NOT allow these scammers remote access to your computer.  They will install malware on it, and if you have any sensitive information stored on your hard drive (like, oh, your credit card numbers, bank account numbers, SSN, etc), they've got you.  Or they could install ransomware that will lock your computer, and try to extort money for some bogus "unlock key".  Microsoft, Apple, etc will NEVER call you because they "found a virus" on your machine.  These clowns want to give you a virus, not clean one up.

So it was just the anti-malware program that was slowing down her computer!

My neighbor fell for it, too.  I found out about a month later when she told me how much faster her computer was running.

I told her its a scam and she took it to a computer repair place.  They discovered that the scammers had turned-off her anti-malware program.  She ended up replacing the computer and changing all of their bank account numbers.

I received a call from an unknown number, although this is the number that the caller said he could be reached at. They claimed to be working for the City of Dunedin Health Department to find out if I had complications from surgery and if I was entitled to compensation. Our town does not have a health department and the street names that he knew for the town were non-existant. He even claimed to live here. He was extremely persistent. I think he was looking at getting information and then probably using it to somehow get identity info or something. This is not the first time that I have received this phone call.

nobody from Microsoft will ever call you and tell you that you have a problem.  They don't work like that.  I have had several of these calls and let me just tell you... IT'S a SCAM... if you pay them the money they will call back in a few days/weeks and tell you that you have been scammed and tell you that they can get your money back you just have to give them your cc information.... they want your information so that they can transfer via Western Union from your credit card.  If you let them do it.... your credit card company will hold you liable even though it was a scam. PEOPLE be careful.....
