I have been receiving phone calls from 800-592-1160 stating the call is regarding urgent American Express matter! I don't have and never had an American Express card or account!!! I have not called and don't intend to after reading other messages.

I received a call today from someone regarding my American Express Blue card saying it was $253 past due. Although my wife pays the bills, I know it was impossible. When I told him I would have to talk to my wife, he then said the immediate amount due was $73.00 and he can take care of right now with my debit card. The 800/592-1160 is the number he gave me when I asked but he couldn't ell me my account number and I hung up on him. I wih I had thought to give him a phony debit card number.

I've been getting calls an average of twice a day for at least a month, from a variety of numbers -- some indicating American Express and others displaying "unavailable." Same message about calling this number. Occasionally there's a testy call for a person whose name is not familiar (and which is probably deliberately unintelligible) nothing that [this person] has not returned their calls. Looks like this has been going on for years.

Unknown Number / Private on caller ID. Says "Urgent Business Matter from American Express." and "This is not a telemarketing call." I called them back on my cell phone (they had called my home phone) knowing it would be a scam. The machine immediately asked me for my card number. I hit 0 twice and it sent me to a person. They asked me for my card numbers right off the bat. Numbers. Multiple. I hung up.

Here same thing called 3 times in a week and said "urgent business matter" havent had amex in years!

I received a call tonight informing me that "This call is not from a telemarketer" and that I "need to return their call to 800-592-1160 about an urgent business matter." I called AMEX using the number on the back of my AMEX card and spoke to a representative who informed me that there was no problem with my account (I pay my card balance in full every month). I had her verify the number 800-592-1160 and she said that it was an AMEX number from their collections department and that it must have called me in error.

I received two calls from this number today. I was requested to contact American Express due to "an urgent business matter." I do not have (and have never had) an American Express card.

This IS an American Express number but it for business services. I called the back of my Amex card to the number I know is legit. They researched this number and said it was for the business services unit. Told them I only had one card and it was not for business. She apologized and put me on hold while they took my phone number off of their system.
Like someone above said, call the number on your card and go that route. Easier to get bees with honey than vinegar.
If you answer this number don't give them your information!

A call from 1-800-592-1160 on my cell phone about 12:14 PST. I didn't answer it because I figured they would leave a message. There was no message left and I don't plan to call the number back. My cell and home phone number are both on the Do Not Call list and I do not own an American Express credit card so I have no idea what they would want from me.

Got an email from AMEX with this number in it stating - "An Important Matter" and Important matter for who? Not Me...LOL After 34 years as a customer, I am walking away from AMEX due to their underhanded practices and we now refuse to take 'the card' in some of our businesses - If we could in all we would - I just wish I was there when the AMEX customer gets agitated when we turn our noses up at their AMEX, so I could personally explain the reason for refusing to take 'the card'. new slogan, American Express, You should leave home WITHOUT it! ba ba bye AMEX.

Got a call left where I work on a Sunday but not directed to any one person. Msg requestsI a call back by end of business. Caller says they're Amer Express & it's a very important matter. I called the number from my business phone & recording asks me to enter my Am Exp number, I pressed 0 until an operator, with a foreign accent, comes on and says "may I have your account number?" I say "No" she then asks for my social security number to which I replied "Hell No". She says she needs the account number & that I called her. I say "No, you called me, what do you want?" Again, she asks for account and social security number. I hung up. Don't give these guys anything. Always use the phone number on the back of your American Express card. PS My office doesn't have an account with American Express.

I just got a call at the business where I work, asking for my boss. He's not here so I took a message. Something about the call felt off, usually customer service people go on and on and on, this guy tried to get off the phone faster than I did, so I searched the number. I still have to give my boss the message but I'm definitely going to tell him about this.

Not AMEX. Scam. Report them. They also use 623-492-8037 and 623-492-6031
Besides area codes 623 is in Arizona..American Express call center is in New York.
Do not call back.

Received 3 calls (to our business voice mail) indicating to call amex at 800-592-1160. I called in using number from back of card. They confirmed that 800-592-1160 was indeed an AMEX nbr, but didn't confirm which department We have a business account with AMEX.
Amex explained that it was probably somebody (employee) using one of our phone lines calling for service and AMEX recorded the caller ID and linked it to the individual calling in.

YEAH, ONE (A LAW) THAT REALLY WORKS!
DD 2011-11-22 00:46:27 Unknown
I don't even OWN a credit card, so I knew it was a scam. Idiots will stop at nothing--and they call from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m (I never answer). I reported these A-holes, and my name is on the "Do Not Call" register, but it just doesn't seem to matter. They're really should be a law.

Then it's official you are the biggest A Hole on the planet. Laughing at other peoples problems only comes back to you in the end.
Beans 2011-11-21 21:29:36 Unknown
Listen Bubba, you're the one who is full of it. In fact you're probably part of the scam. These are just people trying to figure out if they should be giving information to someone who calls and claims they are AMEX. I just got one and it couldn't have felt less shady. They would not tell me why they were calling and the beep in the background let me know they were recording, mind you without telling me they were. So Bubba before you going throwing general accusations out do your research a-hole.

I received several messages on my phone at work after hours. I dont have an American Express card but found it annoying to have my mailbox filled up with these messages. I called them back and they wanted my card number then my social security number ( presumably so they could look up my non existent card number) I simply asked them to stop calling my phone number. They said they took my phone number off the list then within 5 minutes I get a call from a person claiming to be from American Express asking to speak with the person who worked at this desk over 5 years ago. What ever scam they are working from is old. GIVE OUT NOTHING TO ANYONE If amex really needs you they can have a machine leave a message asking you to call the number on the back of your card. (that way you know you have an official number) .... or they can leave a message with your bill.

I don't have an American Express account, yet someone from this number calls me constantly, identifying themselves as from American Express. It is harassment. How can I stop the calls? Is it possible to sue them or something so that they stop doing this.
Dianne 2011-07-13 17:15:57 Unknown
I don't even HAVE an American Express card, nor have I ever had one. I've been getting calls for at least six months, they call once a day and leave the 800-592-1160 callback number, although the calls originate from multiple phone numbers including multiple area codes. I just let them leave a message and then delete it, but it is annoying. From reading other people's posts, it doesn't sound as though calling them back will resolve anything.
Matt 2011-06-27 21:29:03 Unknown
It's a scam. I don't even have an American Express account.
vvgg 2011-06-25 17:01:36 Unknown
Yep, as the above posters mention, it's a scam caller claiming to be AmEx, "vishing" for account information. You can read about my experience here, if you'd like: http://tinyurl.com/6cxlgcu
If you have an AmEx account, I recommend calling their official customer service number (probably listed on the back of your card or on their official website) before calling this number.

I am getting these calls that say "this is an important matter and is not a telemarketing call." Our cards are all paid automatically like clockwork, so I know it isn't a credit issue. I checked the AMEX website and did a search for the phone number. Yes, the number is there, but it seems like it IS a telemarketing call. Here's what it says:
I am struggling financially and would like to keep my Card(s). Is there a program that can assist me through this difficult time?
We can help you if you're having difficulty paying your bill. To learn about programs that can help you pay down your debt with American Express, please go to americanexpress.com/paymentplan or call us at 1-800-592-1160. From outside the United States, please call collect at 1-336-393-1111.

I got a message to call American Express. I called them and they asked me a few questions I gave them my SS# like a jerk and my address. What an idiot I am.
Megan 2011-06-06 20:58:08 Unknown
I got this call twice now. I'm only 18!!! I don't even know why they'd even be calling me when I don't even have a credit card!! Nor do I want one!
Portland Music Co. 2011-05-15 20:54:47 Unknown
We have a message left on our voicemail every night between 7:00pm-8:00pm by someone claiming to be from AMEX and that it is not a telemarketing call. Just that the matter is "urgent". I suppose if it was so "urgent" they would call us during business hours. The calls really need to stop.

Shame on you, your assumption that Amex can never make a mistake is staggering in its arrogance. I know for a fact that my account is NOT PAST DUE because it is set up on automatic payment. Maybe you should try doing your job instead of jerking people around.
